  • Benny Carter ( 1907-2003 ) played the Chicago Jazz Festival on August 31, 1989 . As is often the case with that fest, the offerings were something special - a re-creation of his octet from the 1962 album on IMPULSE Records titled "Further Definitions". Three of the original members from that session
( Carter, Phil Woods and John Collins ) were part of the 1989 ensemble and the replacements were all musical masters more than capable of rounding out the octet.
    BENNY CARTER - alto saxophone
    PHIL WOODS - alto saxophone
    FRANK WESS - tenor saxophone
    EDDIE JOHNSON - tenor saxophone
    JODIE CHRISTAIN - piano
    JOHN COLLINS - guitar
    MILT HINTON - bass
    GUS JOHNSON - drums
"Honeysuckle Rose" was on the 1962 LP and is part of this video.
"Chi-town Shuffle" was composed for this Chicago event.
