Fun fact: we all know the Spanish language version was shot on the same sets at night with a completely different cast and crew, but did you know that The Transylvanian inn , where Renfield is warned against continuing his trip to Castle Dracula , was destroyed by a fire of unknown origin on October 23 , 1930 , after Browning's unit had finished shooting , according to an October 25 item in the Exhibitor's Herald - World . The inn that appears in the Spanish film is a completely new structure .

Imagine if Lugosi had also been SPANISH-speaking, too, and therefore available for both versions of this classic film!

@@dbwindhorst1 , so? It wouldn't mean necessarily that he couldn't speak another European language.

Carlos Villarias was a better actor than Lugosi, but Villarias was campy at times and had zero sex appeal. He was also less creepy than Lugosi. Instead, Villarias made Dracula more lonely and and relatable. I feel that made Villarias the better Dracula.

+PoisonOnHisLips I respectfully disagree. I thought Villarias' Count would have been Better in a comedy version of Dracula. This guy Totally lacked the Regal qualities Essential for the role. Lugosi on the other hand, had these qualities, in Spades.

The story is that Villarias was the only cast member allowed to see Lugosi's dailies, and was directed to emulate him.

The only reason I ever watch the Spanish version is Lupita Tovar. The rest of it is terrible. In fact, I wish there was an edit just of Miss Tovar's scenes. Otherwise just give me Browning's masterpiece with the iconic Lugosi.
