In this Photoshop tutorial you'll learn how to use the new Gradient Mode within the Gradient Tool to actually edit your photos. Some people commented on my last gradient tool tutorial wanting more actionable ways to put these features to use, so here you go! In this lesson, you'll see how to use the Gradient Tool to add lighting effects, add selective transparency to layer masks, and color grade with gradients. There is a lot of awesome techniques to try here, so I hope you enjoy :)

Whatever happened to the former "Gradient Map" tool that Photoshop had a couple of years ago? It would turn various tones of the photo in bright colors. I used to use it all the time. Do you know what Photoshop did with it?
It is still available as an adjustment layer. In the Adjustments Panel you'll find the Gradient Map which sounds like what you're talking about from before.
Last one was not that much helpful if u are aware of masking in Lightroom
