Ah, man. I need a $30 a month subscription to access Adobe Stock images. That's a pretty steep price for just using stock images as exercise files.
Good tutorial Aaron, I follow a lot of designers but your teaching is clear and straightforward. You are one of the best.
Greetings from Belgium.
Excellent video as usual Aaron. So nice to see you posting on a regular basis again.
Aaron, I'm glad that you are posting more regularly, again. Many blessings!
Not sure why it wasn't like this earlier, honestly. It's essentially what they had in Illustrator for years.
Adobe is like Apple is the only explanation
Tutorials and tips are awesome! Very much appreciated Aaron! Good luck!
VERYVERY NICE TIP. THANK YOU SO MUCH. After Photoshop was updated and renewed, the gradient part changed like that of the illustration, so it was too hard to control, but after watching this video, I converted it to classic mode and found peace of mind again. Thanks a lot.
Some other tips: Try holding space while creating or resizing to move the gradient (similar to shape tool). right-click (windows) to bring up the HUD color picker right on the canvas or alt-click to color pick off the canvas without a dialog. You can access the transparency stops and all attributes of the gradient in the properties panel. Drag on the circle rim to rotate or size a gradient.
Ah: Gradient CLASSIC. I make all my art (a lot) on photoshop for 20 years.. my computer went down (shocker) and had to reinstate my photoshop... among other many things. You helped me greatly see something that's an old comforting friend.
Always learning with you
My gradient fill doesnt show the control points, even tho PS is upto date
Great tutorial, Thank you, Aaron.
was looking for exactly this, thank you man.
Thanks, Aaron!
Great informative video as usual
Great tutorial, many thanks
You're the best Aaron!
always enjoy watching your videos, happy place
Many thanks Aaron! Just two mins in, you flagged “classic gradient” and you have answered my question...(I can see how some people may like to look at the effect without an arrow, but by seeing the gradient line I find it 20 times easier to fine tune my line with more accuracy) Thanks again.
Very nice information on the new gradients. The only thing you missed was showing how the Transparent part of the gradient works. You mentioned it but for some reason, you skipped over showing how it works. I have been told that it is supposed to be usable for adding portrait vignettes over a background, but have not been able to find out how to make it work; I guess the transparent portion of the new gradients must be very complex. Other than that your presentation was great I learned a lot. I love your method of presentations, very clear, crisp and easy to follow along. Thanks
Excellent explanation, thanks
you are wonderful. thank you
Really interesting, for a nice result. Thank you Aaron
you're welcome!
so i used to use the gradient on my curves layer, where i do my dodge & burning. However, been having issues since the update. Any thoughts on that ? or will I just have to make it as a seperate layer from the dodge & burn curves?
This was amazing A A Ron.
Awesome Aaron! I really enjoyed seeing how you seamlessly integrated the new feature into the artwork. Your tips are always incredibly helpful and practical, and I can't wait to try them out in my own designs. Keep up the fantastic work! 🔥🔥🙏🙏🙌🙌
Thank you so much! Give those tips a try in your own designs-I bet you'll rock it!! 😄
you are the best Aaron
Very good job!
great job.. bravo
Thank You 🙂!
I am following you since the beginning
thanks for following!
thanks your trick and tips
subscribed great video
Is there a way to make the first circle or Radial gradient an ellipse or other shape like the camera RAW masking has?
Great tutorial! I hope they don't make unnecessary changes to tools, though. Like changing things just for the sake of changing things.
How do you use the gradient tool on a 360 photo along the stitch line or seams line, which are verticle line, so it can blend to both side? I need help. Thank you.
Thnxx a lot
I'm finding the way it reacts with a layer mask to be very hard to work with so the "classic" option solves that issue.
thanks
This is a good video
Congratulation Adobe, you almost made it. I can pick colors from the ,,Color'' panel, but can't pick from the swatches panel and neither of my Libary. Which is mean, I can't re-use my color history for gradients. Adobe still unable to make their features work fine. Why does it so hard to make these flow work just as in Figma? Why do I have to click so many times to do something simple?
Super cool Affinity Photoshop jejejejejeje
Nice, looking good Aaron, I’m giving my soon to be ten grandchildren an Adobe subscription, she loves to draw.
that's so cool! We're sure they'll have a lot of fun!
The first video of yours I came across was "5 Beautiful Effects with Gradients," which changed my world. It was only maybe a month ago? Since then I've been hooked, going through your videos like a woman possessed. Now watching this video I feel like I've come full-circle! Thanks so much for what you do, from one Chicagoan to (I think?) another!
thanks so much for the love!!
Cool
I have a photo of a group which gets progressively darker across the frame (window lit). Can i use the gradient tool to correct this?
nice
Great tutorial thank you! there is a big issue regarding gradient that has been adressed to Adobe support service for years and never was solved : times to times when you export your work in JPG and if by any chance there are any gradients, the gradients are not exported. To do so, you have to flatten your work then export it. It's a massive pain in the neck. So instead of upgrading their tools, they should answer to this.
So they took heed from their other tool called Ilustrator finally. Do we have freeform in PS?
That middle gradient slider hasn’t been working for me in Beta. I slide it but it doesn’t do anything. Weird.

How do I get the handles when using the gradient tool?
Can you Please make a video on how to add Multiple gradients to the same layer?
Please explain how to find handles. Thank you. Naresh Gulati, India
Click into the 'Adobe Photoshop' menu at the top left of your screen, then go to 'settings', then performance, and in the top right of the menu, make sure the box is clicked that reads, 'Use graphics processor'. If that doesn't work, re-start your computer. If it still isn't working, reset your VNRAM like this: Shut down your Mac.
Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold these four keys together: Option, Command, P, R.
Release the keys after about 20 seconds, during which your Mac might appear to restart. For example, you might hear a startup sound more than once, or see the Apple logo more than once.
HELP PLEASE .. when I create a second artboard my gradient in my original artboard moves or disappears. Why is that? Can someone help thank you
Your teaching style is so easy to follow, Thanks
Aaron, you talked so fast that you soundwd like a buzzing bee
Nice! but what if you wanted the gradient to start from the edges of the subject, not just radial? like a glow is coming from her body.
hey Donald! If you send us an email to support with a screenshot of your PSD file and layers our team will do their best to give you advice ☺
🙏🙏🙏
Having headaches after watching this much info abt gradient tool
Hi Aaron Nace, you are being wonderful teacher, could you please release the paid course (mastering color in Photoshop which is paid on Fiverr) here on youtube. if it is not possible then please reduce prices, we really need that course to learn. Thank you
I wish you had explained the gradient control bar in more detail. In particular, how to add & control multiple points.
Hey there! check out our latest PRO tutorial phlearn.com/tutorial/photoshop-2023-the-ultimate-guide-to-the-latest-updates/
It provides a more detailed explanation of the gradient tool and all the other new tools in Photoshop. ☺
Trying to follow your tutorial but get stuck when I double-click on my gradient fill... instead of opening up the editor, it opens a popup labeled Gradient Fill.
Hey Eric! If you're double-clicking the gradient thumbnail in the Layers panel and it's opening a popup labeled "Gradient Fill," there's a chance you're not actually double-clicking on the gradient thumbnail. Instead, you're probably double-clicking on the gradient fill layer itself. To open the Gradient Editor, you need to double-click on the gradient thumbnail, which is the small, rectangular icon that appears next to the gradient fill layer in the Layers panel. Let us know how it goes and if you need any further help!
How can we use multiple gradients on the same level? Now every time we must to do another level. :(
For some silly reason, I was a tad resistant to the new gradient tool. After watching this, I am 100% on board. And frankly, I feel a little silly for being curmudgeonly about it. Shame on me. Thanks, Aaron.
We're thrilled that we could help change your mind and get you 100% on board!
@@phlearn you're the best, man! THE BEST!
not being able to go to the gradient editor from the toolbar is a horrible change to me
Sorry, if I am not excited, I missed the old version of photoshop gradient, it had more control in my opinion with less steps.
@PHLEARN how do you remove someone's mustache in photoshop? I have an old black and white family portrait of my great-Nana Ola's family and one of her family members looks awfully similar to Nikola Tesla, except the guy in the portrait isn't sporting a mustache. I wanted to edit an old photo of Nikola Tesla to see if my assumptions are correct by removing his mustache in Nikola Tesla's portrait and comparing it with the guy in the family portrait
hey there! the tutorial below will teach you some techniques that will help you with your project!
phlearn.com/tutorial/remove-facial-hair-photoshop/
how come the handles for modifying the gradient disappear for mine but not yours?
Hey Chris! To give you a more accurate answer we would need to see a screenshot of your PSD file, layers and tool box. However, here are a few reasons why you might not see the handles:
1. You have not selected the Gradient tool. To see the gradient handles, you need to have the Gradient tool selected. You can find the Gradient tool in the toolbar on the left side of the Photoshop window.
2. You are not editing a gradient layer. The gradient handles will only appear if you are editing a gradient layer. To create a gradient layer, click the New Fill or Adjustment Layer button at the bottom of the Layers panel and select Gradient.
3. The gradient handles are hidden. To unhide the gradient handles, click the Show Gradient Handles button in the Options bar. The Show Gradient Handles button looks like two small squares with a line connecting them.
We hope this helps!
@@phlearn yeah that's a good start. Thanks for the info! I am probably not doing the second two. Thanks!
Great Tutorial Aaron
this function in which version ?..
This is for the latest Photoshop version!😄
adobe finally decided to catch up to every other graphics software with this one.
I did a fresh photoshop installation but I dont have these sliders...
Click into the 'Adobe Photoshop' menu at the top left of your screen, then go to 'settings', then performance, and in the top right of the menu, make sure the box is clicked that reads, 'Use graphics processor'. If that doesn't work, re-start your computer. If it still isn't working, reset your VNRAM like this: Shut down your Mac.

how about adobe will add feature to photoshop like gradient mesh.
thats so OP
So when do we get to the gradient tool? I've got work to do here. Please prep your images before you start and stick to the topic

mine keeps crashing :/
Hey there! If Photoshop keeps crashing it might have to do with space availability inside your computer/laptop. . Try freeing up some disk space by deleting old files or transferring them to an external hard drive. This should give Photoshop more room to run smoothly.
why its not painting on my mask layer ?
Hey there! if you send us an email to support with a screenshot of your PSD file and layers, our team will do their best to assist you.
Oh thank you@@phlearn . I figured this out. For some reason by default it was on screen mode.God know why. I hate when they change interface and copy evrything from MAC.
@@MrArtmen we're glad you were able to figure it out
"Classic gradient" - lifesaver! HATE the new gradient system.
It's a shame, because I love it, but it creates a new layer. I don't want to HAVE to do it on a new layer. Why can't we have this on another layer?
Let’s not shoot the photoshop messenger. 😮
why is it so difficult to just make a gradient using specific colours my god
Is it just me, but in 2024, is everybody else having Lightroom and Photoshop crashes constantly. I built a brand new custom PC last year. Every software works without crashing except Lightroom and Photoshop. Show of hands, please 😅
inverse (noun)
invert (verb)
inverted (past tense of invert)
inversed (invoiced with an Archie Bunker accent)
Why do they keep changing things only to make them worse? There is nothing I can't do in photoshop and now I'm sitting here wasting my companies time trying to learn how to use a tool that I have been using for 25 years. Why?
Ah, classic version, much better. What does it say about a tool if half of the comments are happy that you can put it in classic version.
When I let go of the mouse button to place the distance of the gradient, the handles go away. It doesn't behave anything like this tutorial, thumbs down.
Hey Dalton! It might have to do with the PS version you're using. If you send us an email to support, our team will do their best to guide you 🤗
LOL, Macromedia Flash (yes before Adobe acquired them a decade and a half ago) had a better gradient editing tool almost 20 years ago. this is pathetic.
I'm sorry but you speak and move way way too quickly! hard to follow
You're starting to talk too fast and going over the steps way too quickly. I'm sorry! It's a thumbs down for me. If you continue to rush through the tutorials, I will continue to cast my thumbs-down vote.
@phlearn Hello, Aaron, Do you know "FIX" for Layer Mask in CC 2023. When I am using the Layer mask, the base layer's shadow still appears, a layer mask is not 100%
doesnt work with color picking. you haven't done your homework. it has a huge bug that is annoying: color picking!
