    First broadcast: Feb 2014.
Episode 8/12 Profile of acclaimed photographer Tom Wood. Tom has taken photographs almost every day for the past 40 years, mainly around the streets, workplaces and nightspots of Merseyside. Hugely respected in the photography world, his work is a unique record of British working class life and in recent years he has gained increasing recognition. In summer 2013 Tom visited Mayo in the west of Ireland, where he was born, and the film documents his encounters whilst photographing the landscape and the people for a new book. An exhibition of Tom's work is currently on at the Mostyn Gallery, North Wales until April 6th.

Imagine going round the streets taking pictures of random people without permission. I wouldn’t have the balls to do that.

I don't get what is art in his work. I am seriously interested what it is. Some of the shots capture a candid moment, they are nice, okay, but most of it looks like snapshots to me.
Not trying to be a dick, please, if you're not offended, leave me some food for thought.

For me its the mood and story telling in his work. Theres an essence of culture and passage of time as well. For me,I usually don't understand is the modern art photography, it just doesn't jump to me when I see it and I feel no connection or emotion towards it. I'd like to understand that.

It's capturing and documenting slices of life, trying to tell peoples stories through images. And just like any piece of art, you don't have to like it

A snapshot can be transformed in the printing and editing process. The shot can't be lined up on the fly the way it would be in a studio.

I don't understand how he can take photos of people without their permission - I understand the aspect about moment of time but it is intrusive not to ask and to do it from his chest so the men at the market didn 't notice is furtive and wrong. He was also pushy with the woman in the shop. Didn't like his manner at all.

Anytime somebody says, “I don’t understand how someone can take photos of people without their permission.” They clearly don’t understand candid photography lol

It's perfectly legal, and while some people go too far with it, shoving cameras in peoples faces, I don't have any issue with Tom's work
