PROVINCE LIFE ON A PHILIPPINE ISLAND, MALAPASCUA ISLAND, CEBU

  • Provinces in the Philippines often refer to the smaller towns and countryside versus the cities. Provinces offer some advantages in a slower pace of life and a lower cost of living in many cases. Malapascua Island featured here is on the north end of Cebu Island about a 4 hour trip from Cebu City. It is a popular tourist destination with many resorts and beaches and diving snorkeling opportunities.

Very informative and very reasonable analysis. Quite realistic portrayal of the real Malapascua island, unlike the very superficial facades at tourists areas which of course does not represent the real every day ordinary life in the ,province.

    Rod,
You know me, I love the province life! I will take that any day compared to Manila or Cebu!
Talking about building projects and roads, it amazes me still how they do things. Just like building a road and instead of moving the electric pole, they leave it right where it is in the middle of the road (4:22).
10,000 did seem a bit steep without knowing the inclusions. Being out in a remote area it would seem the rate would be a little lower. Maybe that was a mansion!
That was some very clear water. Looked very inviting and refreshing other than being in the rocks. But when you reached the beach, that really looked nice. Looked like a very nice place to visit.
"Hello" "hello" "hello" .... I like hearing you say hello to everyone as you pass by.
    Great video. Thanks for sharing!

@@lionhearted1969 I have been through quite a few countries, and from my experience only, it has been in the Philippines I have noticed these road hazards more often. Not saying it does not happen, but I have just not seen it as often in other roads I have traveled.
Other than the UAE, I am not a frequent traveler to autocratic nations, so I will have to take your advice on conditions there.

It was good times until 2014 but in 2015 it dropped since oil price dropped and oil is a big income in Norway. So the crown dropped obviously because of oil price but still it is weak even oil price is higher today than in 2015. Maybe peso got little stronger as well in theese years.

@@bobo-bi3gr The social system here is highly organized. The entire community has been under a quarantine in which we all minimize trips outside of apartments. Whenever we go outside, we wear face masks and are aware of minimizing social contact and taking other basic precautions such as frequent handwashing and avoiding touching our faces. Therefore, this aspect of fighting the virus has been quite excellent. I doubt that many other countries could rally the population to follow such strict social control. As far as the health care system, I have been in this country since August (but for two years back in the 90s). I have had only two occasions to deal with the medical system here recently. While hospitals are crowded, the medical and support staff are highly organized, efficient and inexpensive as well as effective. There are advanced medical procedures and equipment available here. This was my experience prior to the outbreak of coronavirus. Now, because of the successful quarantine practice, the virus is fairly well under control in this province, so the local health care system should be adequate to meet medical demands. I think that in provinces where the virus is more widespread, adequate health care is very difficult to obtain because hospitals are swamped by infected and sick people and the default response has been to isolate suspected cases in large quarantine wards where there is a high probability of cross-contamination and where there is insufficient care or equipment for serious cases. Therefore, in summary, I think the ability of the medical care infrastructure to meet demand is of secondary importance to the ability of the society to impose order and follow rules of quarantine. Under conditions of adequate social control, which we have in my local community, the health care system fares very well. Is this a sufficiently comprehensive answer? I don't feel offended or embarrassed by the question or the answer.

I would be more concerned about the virus in your current location, being China has had 80,422 cases vs 3 in the Philippines. As in any other country, the further you get from a major population center, the sparser many things, including medical care get. I wouldn't plan a move in the immediate future though as you might find travel quite restricted to you.

Yes, of course I am concerned about my current location, but fortunately our island province seems to be doing very well relative to other parts of China. BTW, there are three OFFICIAL cases in the Philippines. I highly doubt that is the actual number of infected people. Are you in the Philippines now? Is the government taking any measures to limit the spread of the virus? In every country, whether China, Italy, South Korea or Iran, the problem starts with just one infected person spreading to others, so be careful and stay well!
