  • Did you know you can get rid of it yourself? I didn't until I talked to a friend who did. In this video, I play a bit of guitar and discuss what worked for me. Enjoy!

Fantastic PSA here. Indeed, it sucks when the body fails ya. And really, most of the time it’s the other way around; you’re failing your body and so it goes to shit. But an injury or a disease can also be a gift, a teacher, that forces you to take care of yourself. And middle age is a mine field of these gifts…. Stay strong. And great chord progression!

I’ve been following since the beginning. First saw your interview with Zac on truetone. Love the videos of you doing sessions I think I’ve really only seen Tim Pierce do that in the beginning too. Very interesting content keep it up .

Ive been treating my tennis elbow for the last 2 months with a hand therapist.
The 2 very first exercises she gave me were the ones you mentioned. However I can share her variation of the 2nd one you demonstrated.
For the 1st one, I started with a towel instead. You’re still able to twist a towel (folded short) and can get similar result. After a few weeks on the towel then my therapist upgraded me to the same one you bought off amazon.
For the dumbbell exercise the only movement that helps (according to my therapist) is the downward movement, going down really slowly. That means you use your other hand to lift the hand with the dumbbell up and then slowly make the movement downward.
Going up with the dumbbell will only add unnecessary stress to your muscles and tendon.
It’s been extremely helpful for me and I also have sessions with needles and lots of massage.
Bonus: freeze a 200ml Coca Cola bottle with water and roll over the tendon for a good 5-10min after playing. Tendon loves ice.
Consistency with the exercises is key!! I do them daily and can feel a regression when I miss a few days.

I so appreciate your follow-up on this issue. I commented on your recent video about having this issue for over 2 years now. It gets so bad that it interrupts my sleep. I’m definitely going to do this. It seems so odd to get physical therapy tips from a guitar channel, but I’m just thankful that you bring up more real life issues that affect guitarists. This is quickly becoming my favorite guitar YT channel. (Even more than Tim Pierce, Pete Thorn and more). I still crave more overdub sessions you share with us. It’s so great to watch a pro work through a song, then explain your phrasing choices.
You’re a godsend, Justin. Thank you! 🙏 Cheers from Texas.

I really struggled with this a few years ago. I'm a bartender and server and was quite unsure if my job or guitar was causing this. I was playing a lot if a effort to improve. I consulted my doc and he told me if it was effecting me to where I couldn't play or work, he would give me a cortisone shot for temporary relief. However, he advised me to wear a tennis elbow brace for a period first. I wasn't sure but over time(quite a bit), it went away and I have no problem with it today.

Wish I sounded that good goofing around.
I had crappy tennis elbow for about 6 months and then it finally resolved itself, it's a bitch. If I'd known about those cool twist bars I'd have tried that for sure.
I did try the electric stimulation thing and it did absolutely nothing. Glad you're back to normal again.

Wow! Justin, thank you so much! I’ve played guitar for 38 years and have tattooed for 26. Dealing with this pain now and very excited in hopes this works for me. I’ve gotten rid of carpal tunnel by aggressive arm massaging, but the massaging hasn’t helped the newer elbow pain. Been a fan of the channel and this is a blessing to see!

I feel this is a rite of passage for ageing working guitarists haha! well done on overcoming it. I had to add some nerve flossing exercises for ulnar nerve...another common guitar playing related issue. I still do them occasionally. I feel there has to be a balance amongst all parts of the structure arm , shoulder, elbow, wrist, back muscles. I understand if the elbow takes the strain because, let's say, the shoulder is weaker you get injuries in that area and have to get a balance of strength in all areas of the arm...

Thanks you for this video and the previous video you did on this. Right about the same time the 1st video came out I had been noticing the exact same pain in my left hand (right handed guitar player) and wasn’t sure that was what i was experiencing until this video. I tried the exercise without any equipment and immediately felt the pain, but after several reps it started to feel like it was helping. Going to order some of those. Thanks again. Super helpful

Hey man, I'm gonna give this a shot before I say yes to surgery on my elbow and wrist (to release the nerve compression), which a specialist recommended for me this weekt. I have a weakness in my left hand which gives me about 30% of the strength I've got in my right. I've also been feeling like I had a little bit of tennis elbow. I'll give these a shot for a few weeks and see if I see any improvement. Cheers bud.

Never had that problem before until 3 years ago.

I get the greatest high out of playing in support of a beautiful voice. I've composed some guitar instrumentals, where I play the rhythm, bass, and solo over a drum track . . . it's great, but still not as great as the playing with a tight band and an awesome singer. Just my personal predilection. 🎸 And . . . I have thrown my back out from my poor posture in the guitar chair. So bring on the recommendations for better guitar fitness! I did make an effort to play standing more often at home. And working out.

Carnivore also gets rid of inflammation- all those aches and pains gone (until you eat significant carbs again). Oxylates and lectins in plants/legumes also promote aches and pains. Once you try 30 days of beef butter bacon and eggs you won’t deny it. It’ll get rid of that breathlessness too. And any weight you want to lose.
Be sure your arms/hands are relaxed while sleeping. Not under any tension/pushing down.

Looking forward to your upcoming content about fitness for guitarists. I just turned fifty and after playing 2hours gigs with the 3hours of driving it takes a toll on the body and I sure wonder how studio guys in your league pull-it off day after day. Try keto or carnivore. The inflammation goes away and allows your body to heal. Prefer carnivore since plants have oxylates that promote aches, depression and low energy for me. Nuts aren’t healthy despite what the establishment nonsense says. They really are malpracticing daily.
