Whenainhave a fruit fly problem, the last thing that I do at night when closing up my kitchen is microwave 2 cups of water until boiling and then I put it down the kitchen sink drain. This kills any fruit flies living in the drain and their eggs. DO NOT do this is you have PVC pipes under your kitchen sink however. I can do this because I have metal pipes.
What does the dawn dish soap do
Dawn, and any liquid soap breaks the surface tension of the water. This means these tiny little bugs can't just "stand" on the surface of the water mixture and fly off again as they would be able to without the addition of soap.
What's the reason for the Dawn?
Dawn dishwashing liquid, like any soap will break the surface tension of the water. Otherwise teeny tiny bugs could just land on the water and vinegar mixture and fly off again. The soap makes that impossible.
It traps them & drown them keeps them from flying out the trap
