Distilled white vinegar is the cleaning darling of environmentally conscious, frugal homeowners everywhere. Experts suggest it all the time. It’s incredibly effective, but it could potentially void your appliance warranties. For example, we often talk about putting vinegar in a bowl on the top rack of the dishwasher to eliminate hard-water stains. Some people like to put vinegar in the rinse aid compartment, but the acid in the vinegar could compromise the integrity of the compartment’s gaskets. Be sure to check your warranties and usage guides before using white vinegar in anything that has rubber components. This includes coffee makers.
Distilled white vinegar, around 5-6%, has a pH of about 2.5, while Citric Acid has a pH of about 2.2.
Ideally you want to use a cleaning agent that is closer to a neutral Ph of 7 or higher (a solution that is more alkaline).
Yet you do not want to use something that is much greater than a neutral Ph of 7. For example bleach which has a Ph of 13.5 or anything else that is acidic may be dangerous to work with, it may create hazardous fumes and damage seals, gaskets and plastic components, potentially it could cause damage to metal components.
If you live in an area with hard water, a product designed as a descaler (for coffee makers) should work effectively.
v clothes washing machines (specifically front-loading machines) and are sometimes suitable for other cleaning jobs around the house.
Most homeowners have some sort of Oxi Clean that they may use for laundry, cleaning around the house or the deck/patio outside. A half scoop of this run in the dishwasher can do a fantastic job with hard water build up, food residue, and unpleasant odors and it is close to a neutral Ph of 7, so it is not acid and should not cause any damage to any plastic or rubber components.
If a dishwasher is particularly gross, you may need to run a cleaning cycle more than once to get it clean and for any build up or odors to completely go away.
Citric acid has a Ph of 2.2. Distilled white vinegar has a Ph of 2.5
    From CNET Home Tips:
    How to clean a dishwasher
Step 1: Clean the dishwasher filter
The filter is the place where food particles get caught. A stopped-up filter can cause overflows, so it's important to give it a cleanup every week or so. It can be found on the floor of the inside of the dishwasher. Simply unscrew the knob and lift the filter out (the location and removal will vary depending on the brand, so check your owner's manual).
Wash the filter by rinsing it with warm water and dishwashing soap, then give it a good scrub with a soft bristle brush. Rinse with clean water and let the filter air dry before popping it back into place.
Step 2: Clean the dishwasher seal
The seal is what keeps the water inside your dishwasher and not on your floor. To keep it clean, once a month scrub the seal with warm water and wipe it down with a clean, dry cloth.
Step 3: De-clog the water sprayers
The spraying arms in your dishwasher need a little love every six months or so. Use a toothpick to pry any food particles from the sprayer holes. This will increase the amount of water that comes out, increasing cleaning power.
Step 4: Get the gunk out of the silverware basket (or under or behind it).
The silverware basket can become unsanitary quickly. Once a week, remove it and wash it with warm water, a bottle brush and dish soap. Be sure to get out any food particles that may be stuck inside the cups to prevent mold.
Keep every part of your dishwasher clean and smelling fresh with our tips.

What to do if your dishwasher smells
If your dishwasher is starting to smell a little rank, there is an easy way to deodorize it. Some people say to put one cup of white vinegar into the bottom of your empty dishwasher and run the deep cleaning cycle -- however, vinegar can damage the plastic in your dishwasher and the seals, including some gaskets that are not visible, so you might want to try this method instead. Sprinkle baking soda on the bottom of the washer, let it sit for an hour or two, or better yet, overnight, and then run an average load while the dishwasher is empty. That should get rid of that gross smell.
There are commercially available dishwasher cleaning solutions available.
Many people already have oxi clean at home and that can be a good thing to use that is not acidic and should not cause any harm.
