  • Hello Cardboard crafters!
I'm happy to share a making of a pencil case (pencil box) made of cardboard!
Hiding the corrugated edge of the cardboard is the key to making it clean and also strong.
    Materials
    Cardboard
    Glue
    Neodymium magnet (5mmx2mm x2)

This is absolutely amazing, where did you learn the trick of cutting channels like that, it is genius!!

Thank you so much for your kind comment! My challenge started by trying to hide the corrugated edge of the cardboard without adding more materials such as tape, or decorative papers. Then this method came out as a solution after many tries and errors. The trick is to use an "old cutter knife" not to cut through the other side of the cardboard.

@@itoshigestudio So the channels are 2x the width of the material, for instance if this is 3mm thick cardboard, you would make the channel 6mm? I have to try this for myself, this pencil case is a work of art!

@@Intenzity Thanks for your kind comment! Exactly. It's 2x the width of the material. For this case in the video, I used 4mm(x2) thick for the side because I wanted to have space for the magnet (5mm width). 6mm or less thickness for the side might look more sophisticated I can imagine:)
I'm glad to hear that you feel like trying it!

    I love your work it's amazing 😍😍
I recently found some of your posts on Pinterest and i found it so satisfying and interesting wanted to see more so i search you on CZcams and I'm glad i found you.
Also i wanna give it a try my paint brushes can't be in one place i always lost them 😭 this pencil case will work for me but I'm so confused about the measurements can you explain them?

Glad you like them! Sorry for not sharing the size of the box for this video. I made it without a plan so it was totally improvised. The size was 70mm x 190mm and the thickness should be 30mm+-. I used C-flute (4mm) Cardboard.

You do amazing work with cardboard! ❤ I am watching several of your tutorials now to get a few ideas how to make a project of my own to hold some art supplies. After all that work to make this nice box, The only thing I might do differently is make the binding out of fabric or leather since that would be a weak spot due to repeatedly being opened and closed. However, I am sure it could be used for a good while like this, and once it does tear (or if it ever does), then that you could simply cut around the edges of the old binding, and add a new binding with little impact to the case. The case, however, 2 thumbs up. Excellent job. 🙂
If you don't mind, I do have a few questions. At 7:16 you used what looks to be some sort of punch tool. I couldn't really tell what it was doing, but I think it rounded the edges of your paper strips? Is that correct? Also, is there a special glue you recommend for these projects, or would glue like Elmer's glue work okay? If it doesn't hold up well, after all that work, I'd prefer to buy whatever lasts. Have you ever worked with Coroplast, or corrugated plastics? I think I would like for what I am making to be more resistant to humidity, but I don't know if a layer of epoxy over the cardboard would be enough, or if I should consider a different material like Coroplast? Thank you again for sharing your work. I really appreciate it! 🙂

Thank you for your comment! That's good idea to use fabric or leather! It's like book binding technique for the same reason:) If I remember correctly, I used the thick cardboard paper from amazon envelop (not a box) as material for the joint part.
The punch tool is for cutting round corners to prevent rubbing and rolling up the corner as you mentioned.
As for the glue, I feel comfortable to use the glue for wood work so far rather than the glue for paper. It works well for me. I haven't tried Elmar's glue nor Coroplast as I haven't seen in my area but those look good. I'd try if I have a chance:)
The best solution for me, which can be overstated for now, is to have eco-friendly glue to align with the idea of upcycling unused cardboard.
Thanks again for your feedback. Hope you enjoy!!

@@itoshigestudio Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my questions. Your answers are helpful. 🙂 If you ever use fabric, I would suggest a thicker, stiff fabric like canvas. That could make a really nice binder where you need a project to bend. Plus, you would have lots of colors to chose from, so could find a beige close to the cardboard color. Elmer's glue says 'Safe, Non-Toxic' but that doesn't necessarily translate to environmentally friendly . . .
I am definitely enjoying your videos. Your work is top notch, and looks professional/commercial level. Tons of videos are out showing people working with cardboard, and while they do have some clever ideas, their end results are often not so refined. However, contact paper and wall paper can do wonders. 😆
Aside from how nice your projects turn out looking, I think they are also sturdier. You glue the edge, plus have flaps that overlap and seal against a second board, which reinforces and makes each piece sturdier. Most folks just glue an edge and move on, and I wonder if it will last long if they use the item very much? I suspect not. I want my project to hold up to a little weight, and daily use, so your ideas appeal more to me. My project may not end up so refined, but it will be sturdy, hopefully, or I will dump a LOT of art supplies. 😂

Thanks too for your message. I believe the same as you said about the quality of finished work.
I also enjoy the gap of the value transformation between the material that supposed to be disposed, turned to be an almost permanent item at your place with practicality😁😁😁
