The essex upright surprised me the most by far!
Definitely. I thought the Essex had a mellow and a full sound.
I confused the two uprights, but got the rest right. You could hear the clicking of the keys of the e-piano and the grandpianos have much more saturated and rich deep tunes than most uprights in my opinion. I am suprised how good the essex sounded.
Same here!
Same
Same, the essex sound is pretty beautiful.
Sane here
Same, the Steinway was easy to find, and the e was pretty obvious as well. The rest was just two uprights vs a grand, which is not that challenging to differentiate.
That Essex upright is surprisingly good!
Surprisingly similar, ePianos and Uprights really have improved a lot in the past 20 years!
The Boston Upright is remarkable for such an instrumnet. The warmth of this Steinway D is unsurpassed.
Yeah It confused me a bit too
The pianist plays every Instrument with such an excellence that it makes the task even more challenging! Even the lower end of the Instruments shines. There was a bit of Noise added from the loudspeaker when performing the digital giving a helpful hint. I was surprised to hear all Instruments at high accustic quality. Unfortunately my tablet is Not helpful to analyze more in depth. I really enjoyed the presentation . 👏
the essex surprised me the most... such a marvelous first impression
I just listened on my iPhone and frankly did not guess which digital piano was. It just proves to me that for casual listener it really does not matter much. It is different for those who play - I much prefer to play on Yamaha C7 (I use it a couple of times a week) than on my digital piano. I use piano VSTs (mostly VSL).
Michael
The e-piano and Steinway were easy to distinguish from the rest, but I struggled to tell the difference between the uprights and the Boston Grand. Those uprights were better than almost all the other ones I have played on
Same.
I agree. I managed to get all of them correct but wasn't 100 % sure on the uprights and Boston Grand. I just went by my gut feeling.
I’ve identified all of them right ! I am so surprised of myself, did not thought I could do it
Thank you for this interesting video as always Annique 😊
I liked the Boston Grand the most. The low range really has nice full presence. Great playing too! 🎹
Yes I was about to comment and saw your post. The Boston Grand has the best low end, much better than the Steinway. But this test is somewhat flawed due to the fact that the different rooms have different acoustic characteristics and it could just be the room that's better, or the way it was recorded. I have a hard time believing that the Steinway has such weak bass compared to the Boston Grand, given their similar construction.
Agree
For me, the Steinway D and Boston Grand piano was pretty easy. Especially the notes on the lower register sounded rich and full. But I actually had trouble with the e piano and the Essex upright - which I really did not expect
True. But not so much difference between the Boston Grand and the Steinway. They’re both superior instruments.
The upright is surprisingly good.
I was surprised by the quality of the Boston upright, I thought it was one of the grands. The e-piano was an unfair comparison at its price point. I'm an amateur pianist and I play a top-of-the-line Casio e-piano, with an actual wooden body and a keyboard developed by Bechstein. And frankly, in a blind listening test I couldn't tell the difference between my piano and even a very high quality mechanical upright.
The unfair comparison was not by accident, as she mentions in the beginning „ the nightmare of pianists“. Well, classical pianists do not have to carry their instrument to the next gig, they find one there. Maybe a retest with a reasonable stagepiano, like Nord, plus amps a.s.o. to match the price of the rest, will change the mindset a bit.
Her clear bias against the nameless e-piano infuriates me. For one, you don't record a digital piano like that. Also not all digital pianos are created the same...JUST LIKE ACOUSTIC PIANOS. Also, I have NEVER, EVER IN MY LIFE played an upright I actually liked the feel and sound of. E V E R. I have not played a Boston or a Bechstein upright, but I have played practically all the other Major brands of upright makers. They always have light action to the point where I feel like i am playing on some 61-key nonweighted action. Now THAT is the nightmare of all pianists. Not just the entire class of all digital pianos and electronic keyboards lumped into one stupid category.
Also, how do you expect us to critically compare the minute details of sound ON CZcams? CZcams itself degrades the sound, and I just listened to this video in mono on my cell phone speakers. There WAS a difference in the instruments in tonal quality, but nothing major. If you want to compare a $1000 digital piano to a $150,000 then I would say that the Steinway is a ripoff. You pay 150 times more for slightly better action and slightly better tone. And I say that as a college educated Piano Pedagogy Major that has spent thousands of hours on a Steinway D.
Honestly, I get sick and tired of piano snobs acting like if its not acoustic then it doesn't count. I have heard people say stuff like that all my life. Good for you for growing up in a rich family. Must be nice. I have really enjoyed all of your videos up until THIS ONE, Annique.
Go try a newer Roland Digital piano and get back to me.
Love the Boston grand, marvelous sound!
First of all, I'm listening to this video on my Concert Grand 1-inch Laptop Speakers. So I got the Essex and the e-piano mixed up. But I correctly identified the Bostons and Steinway. The assertiveness of the lowest register of the concert grand gives it away. Great video!
I managed to identify the e-piano but the rest was not so easy! The Essex sounded surprisingly good! Nevertheless, I think it would have been interesting to include a higher tier E-piano, maybe from the Yamaha CLP line of something of that sort.
Or any virtualized instruments like the VSL Syncron Pianos, would be interesting to see if there is any difference left.
Yes, I agree. This could have been done with various plug-ins like the Ravel piano, Mutations prepared piano, Alicia Keys piano, Love piano (kontakt) etc to see if any of them capture the realism. I know for sure that I fooled my lecturer, who thought that a piece I created with MIDI with done on a real piano.
To me it's not the instruments but the way you bring the sound of each to fore. You are just a gifted and amazing pianist that you bring out the best from all those instrument.❤
Since I own a Steinway, I am thrilled I recognized it. This was a good exercise since I never heard them in comparison.
Buying a Steinway is easier than playing any piano!
Thank you!
"Buying a Steinway is easier than playing a piano." LOL isn't that the truth? Except it is not easy if you don't have the money of course...
all good sounds, especially 3's warmth clarity and depth
Fantastic video
Timeless beautiful, classy and elegant music... I like all of them! 👍🎹🇳🇿
#1 actually sounds great!
Yall arent going to believe but i got it all right
The first just has that more hammered upright sound, second sounds a lot more balanced, the third..., the fourth just has that incredible sound and the last one was well, the last one
I have a $1500 yamaha digital piano and it sounds the same as a grand piano even the key weight is right
Really cool how these digital pianos evolved, in the 90's they were simple "toys"
Is it a Yamaha P515? Mine Is a Yamaha DGX670🎹🎶
I think is not a cuestion only of sound, the feeling of the keys in the fingers very underrated
1 essex upright
2. boston grand
3. boston upright
4. steinway
5. e-piano
3 and 5 were switched around. Not my fault you play the e-piano so well. Also I only have an E-piano so please dont bash it too hard. :')
Exactly my guess lolllll
That e piano sounds surprisingly good
@@No0bZai96 it probably is a CFX sound
Ooooomg, I got everything right! The e-piano was the easiest to identify for sure. Both the Boston grand and the Steinway were so unique, with a stronger and more vivid sound, especially in the bass.
Digital have better price at least
Sure is! The sound of a keyboard is knowhere near a grand piano, but there still are very good electric pianos for 1000$. I myself own a Yamaha P125 and it's very nice for a 1st instrument
@Velnox I have a casio s 110 digital piano 🎹 and it as a great grand piano sound and grand piano mechanism for a fraction of the price of a Grand piano, I agree digital pianos have improved a lot, all pianos sound great in this video, and Annique plays beautifully, greetings from wales uk 😀
@@Velnox I have played many, MANY grand pianos that sounded and felt TERRIBLE. Just because it is a grand is meaningless. It must be a well-maintained grand. That is something you rarely have to deal with with a digital piano. Not all digital pianos are the same. I personally recommend Roland. Try one of their newer 88 key digital pianos and you will be surprised.
The Boston upright surprised me! It has a rich sound! ❤
I thought the e-piano was easily picked out of the 5 because of its lack of depth and sparkle. Compare this to playing software based Modartt Pianoteq 8, or the V-piano built into the Roland Fantom 8 which in my opinion both sound miles better and use physics modeling to simulate a real acoustic piano to the minut detail including string resonance, room acoustics, spatial effects, velocity layering and dynamics, tuning and temperament, overtones and harmonics, Una Corda (Soft Pedal) effect, string damping and muting, etc.
There is a huge difference in quality between e-pianos. I'm curious, could you please tell me what model and preset was used here?
I am a HUGE fan of both the Roland action as well as their Supernatural sound engine!
I didn't try to differentiate between the brands of the two uprights and the two grands, but I was able to properly identify each type (digital, upright, grand). It's interesting how sound quality differences stand out between the types of instruments. The two Boston pianos held-up quite well. The Boston upright was the most surprisingly good in sound quality. That's a fun little test!
I like the sound of the Essex and the Boston upright pianos !
Here's my guess:
1 - boston grand
2 - essex upright
3 - e piano
4 - steinway D
5 - boston upright
Oh damn, I switched the boston grand with the essex upright. That's an amazing sounding upright then! haha
I got the digital correct, and the Steinway. Mostly just guessing. The rest I couldn't tell. I thought the first two were the uprights, and the last were the grands. The digital just sounded a little too clean. They all sounded fantastic to my ear. I'm sure they felt more different than they sounded. The fact that you can get a great sounding piano for 1K is amazing. They only getting better too!
I don't like the hatred some people seem to have for the beginner instruments. It's almost as if nobody should play on anything other than a multi-million dollar instrument. Music will die if people don't start at the beginning. It's a sad time if people are discouraged from learning anything new.
got the steinway correct...just sounds perfect
Annique!!! 🤩✌🏻🫶
Got wrong with E-Piano with Boston upright, it sounds surprisingly good
Instantly recognized the steinway, incredible sound.
I loved the Boston Grand Piano.
Nr 4 is wow ❤ must be the steinway , but the last one was charming as well. And surprise, the Boston upright was open
Only made my mistakes at the beginning. The way that the Essex is from its sound so clear imo, I really thought that this would have been the Boston. The way the steinway was sounding was magnificent and clear and the E-Piano was more like „muffled“ in my opinion. Amazing music and amazing comparisons!
My favourite one is the boston upright. I never liked the model D anyway. Try Shigeru Kawai one day, they are always a dream to play.
i only recognized the third one as the cheap epiano and the 4th one as the most expensive one. the sound is so undynamic on the epiano. and the fourth one just sounded the best.
I picked out the Steinway and the Boston, digital not too bad for the price. The Essex has a nice sound.
1. Essex upright
2. Boston Grand
3. E Piano
4. Steinway D
5. Boston Upright
to be honest, I confused the electric and two uprights ;-; I knew the one had especially annoying higher register which was not the sort of harpish sound I expect from strings. The two grands I could hear how the middle voice and lower voice were extremely well blended and balanced with the melody. This is a very good experiment! Opens my eyes to the real sound of pianos - the electric one was quite impressive compared to what I was expecting
I think it is like this: Essex no.1, Boston Upright no.2, E-piano no.3, Boston Grand no.4 and Steinway Grand Model D no. 5!
Your skill is so good. I can't tell the difference. They are all good. I suppose in real music hall one can tell the difference easier 😅
I correctly got 5/5. Personally, I am very proud, I am not a piano fanatic in any way in terms of quality, but I must say, the Boston upright piano certainly had the best bolster and sharpness to its sound and i found it quite lovely to listen to.
It's hard to distinguish them listening on a Samsung phone. I was impressed by the no. 2 Boston, and not so impressed by the e-piano. However, some e-pianos sound remarkably good. In 1998, when my aunt gave me $5,000 for Christmas, I immediately bought a Baldwin e-piano. I think it actually sounded better than the Wurlitzer I used to learn to play on in the late 50s and early 60s -- but I last played the Wurlitzer in 1976, so it's hard to judge between them. At the piano store in Rhode Island where I bought the Baldwin, they had a Wurlitzer upright with a $14,000 price tag. It sounded so good that my heart melted, but on my budget, I could only dream of having that upright.
This was a lot of fun! I had to listen to it three times, but I ended up getting them right.
- I originally thought the Boston grand was an upright (sorry, Boston!), but it became more clear when comparing the two directly.
- I remembered the Boston upright actually sounds particularly nice, while the Essex has a bit of a muddy quality to it
- The Steinway was dead obvious (and tugged at the heartstrings a bit -- I think you just naturally play better when playing a model D!).
- The keys clacking and somewhat harsh quality gave away the E piano
Really wanted a comparison with a good VST like synthogy, moddart or ravenscroft (and decent action master keyboard like vpc1 or mp11).
Thanks for the video Annique.
The e-piano's sound is suprisingly good.
Love your videos❤
( i got 4 correct )
The only one i got was the Steinway (but I'm very new to piano in general, just a few months of playing and listening)
The only one I immediately recognized was the Steinway grand with its rich, profound and powerful sounds. The other 4 sounded equally dull to me, but that may be due to listening on my phone, or to the microphones used for recording.... By the way, bravo Annique for your videos and your piano skills and musicality.
So fascinating - the uprights sounded muffled, so they confused me until I heard the e-piano which had the ‘same note’ if that makes sense, it was always the same, - and the grand pianos were immediately recognizable because you can hear the volume of them? I didn’t realize there were gonna be more than 2 pianos hahaha but I grew up with an upright and a grand piano, so fascinating how you can hear like *where* the sound is, either from a lot of space, or muffled, or digital.
I couldn't tell the difference. And I have a good ears. All sound buetiful with plenty of resonance.
If you can’t tell the difference, you probably need better speakers/headphones or maybe your ears aren’t as good as you think they are.
The Essex upright sounded way better than I expected.
I wonder, if you recorded from the audio out of the electronic piano, if the difference would be harder to spot. I own an older Kawai Concert Artist piano (probably closer to 3000 euro when it was new), and when compared to my Sauter upright the epiano sounds weaker on its own speakers, but better with earphones. My Sauter needs to be regulated though, so not the best comparison right now.
ok i legit thought the Essex was the best and i thought it was the Steinway! i actually was pretty confident the actual Steinway was an upright because of a strange buzzing sound i heard. i think it might be due to sympathetic resonance, but it threw me off! However, the Steinway really shined with the longer clip where you get to the swell in the music.
1 - Boston Upright 2- Essex Upright 3- E.Piano 4- Steinway 5- Boston
I was able to almost immediately identify the e-piano from the clicking and the steinway (their timbre is just so identifiable), the rest I didn't really know the timbre of but I got the essex right by sheer luck
I got number 1, 2 and 3 right, but I was so sure number 5 was a steinway, Boston upright has a beautiful sound
une barque sur l'ocean (1 min, 10 min, and 1 hour??) plsss
1 essex upright - yay
2 boston upright - oop it was the grand
3 e piano - yay it was quite obvious
4 steinway d - yay
5 boston grand - wellll😅
Had a fun time quessing!!!!
if somebody ever played on/heard electronic keyboards, the loud rubber-plastic key mechanism and nail-plastic contact sounds gave away pretty easily the E piano, i thought its gonna be recorded digitally. The steinway piano is just on the other level compered to the others :O (i was guessing just these two at first, cuz im lazy xd) The pianino's low notes was just almost non existing for me, idk if it is a cons against the grand pianos or just the mics positioning was different. Anyway, great video!
Got the Bostons confused hehe. I know this is a music channel, but ur hair is killing it lol (I mean so is ur playing.. haha). Maybe a haircare routine?! LOLLLL
the problem with e-pianos in public performance is that you really need the right sound system. if it's wrong or not powerful enough, you just get a tinny, digital timbre. but direct recording into sound editing software will sound pretty good, especially if listening through headphones.
The Electric piano is the way to go for the average home or stage band player .Pros are the cost obviously, also if you own a real piano take in mind the cost of retuning every few months , then you need a space big enough to put it , if you can afford a decent one that is .The average person on the street would not notice any sound difference anyway .Electric pianos sound far more realistic in 2024 , even a Yamaha around 600 dollars with semi weighted keys will get you a decent passable sound . If you require a more impressive sound, buy a Nord stage piano full weighted keys and expressive sound , although it will cost around 3 thousand dollars to buy . I've seen videos of pros who can't tell the Nord sound from the real grand .
Yeah I still prefer a good acoustic grand piano whenever possible. To each they're own🎹🎶
Maybe you cant hear a big difference in youtube but front of a 200.000 piano or a 1000 electronics the feeling, the touch, the keys, the harmonics and the infinite possibilities of nuance of a real piano are just not comparable
Only pianist know that a piano is not just a matter of sound
You can drive a ferrari and a ford at 100kmh both but the feeling isnt the same
My 0.2 cts❤
All I could hear was that No3 had a weird crackling noise, and that No2 and No4 sounded warmer. Besides that everything sounded great to me. For that reason I think it's all about the pianist, not the piano.
Can you do one where you compare various types of playing for each of the pianos? For example, legato, staccato, strong bass, very high notes etc. I find that the strengths of an expensive instrument lie in the categories outside of legato in the middle register
I got most of them right, except I confused the Boston grand for the digital and the digital for the Boston grand . It was a very quick response, listening to it once.
the essex surprised me quite a bit, i didn't expect all that depth and richness of sound from un upright piano, I confused it with the boston gp
My answers: 1 Steinway D 2 Boston Grand 3 Epiano 4 Boston Upright 5 Essex Upright. The Epiano was very easy to identify it sounded mushy and artificial. There was also a sound like the actions make from the e piano.
What Digital Piano is it? It sounds good and I’m looking for one to practice at home

This was actually a lot harder than Vinheteiro's comparison haha. It's kinda hard to hear the difference in the video, but thankfully I was able to try out an Essex baby grand, Boston baby grand, NY Steinway S, and a Hamburg Steinway B in person a few months ago. I'll have to take a listen again🎹🎶
That Boston grand is pretty danged good.
Second is the best!
No. 1 Essex
No. 2 Boston Upright.
No. 3 Digital Piano
No. 4 Steinway Grand
No. 5 Boston Grand
I could tell which one was the Digital Piano and which one was the budget upright. The Essex has a warm sound but it is has less clarity in the lower register compared to more expensive pianos.
However, i am surprised how difficult it is to tell the difference between a grand and a upright piano (via Macbook speakers). Also telling the difference between 4 and 5 was kinda hard because in the video it says No. 4 for both 4 and 5.
I got the least and most expensive correct: Digital Piano and the Steinway D. My full results:
Guess/Actual
1. Boston Grand/Essex Upright
2. Boston Upright/Boston Grand
3. Digital/Digital
4. Steinway/Steinway
5. Essex Upright/Boston Upright
I definitely got the E-Piano as number 3, but I didn't know the rest:)
I’ve been on summer break for a week and already miss my unlimited access to Steinways
could you do a Chopin etude video on the ocean etude (op.25 no12) Im thinking of learning it and it would help alot
I only confused the two uprights. I was somewhat surprised at the tone/handling of the Essex!
I like the Essex one the most... usually I won't expect that I like an upright more than a grand piano.
Maybe you can say which microphone you use to record the acoustic ones... the digital one you probably use direct USB in, so it is all digital
Dunno but I must state that you play this piece very very nicely. :)
I like how Boston and Steinway D sounds 😌😌
Hey Annique :) you can try 1min 10mins 1 hour challange with Polovtsian dances by Prince Igor. I am pretty sure you will like the melody in it and also the feeling inside it😊❤
sounds cool
1. Boston Upright
2. Boston Grand Piano
3. E-Piano
4. Steinway D.
5. Essex
This was my list!
Wow... I'm astonished at your ability to make an electric keyboard sound so beautiful.
I'm not gonna lie. The differences, just from hearing the recordings, are barely perceptible. A few of them, I knew for sure they were an electric keyboard, but I couldn't tell which one was the electric keyboard. And that was my only goal in listening to them.
I imagine the greatest difference is the feel of the keys and pedals while playing.
A lot of the very high dollar pianos, you're just paying for a name. I doubt I would ever buy a piano brand new because they're just so overpriced. So easy to find a very high quality piano for a low price point.
I was pretty sure #1 was a grand piano when first listening, probably Boston, and #2 an upright, both I got wrong. Got #3, #4 correct and assumed #5 to be the other upright. So the Essex surprised me the most.
Wasn't able to identify the upgright ones, but the e-piano was easy to spot, and also the Steinway because its sound was much more powerful than the rest of them.
I'm very curoius about how the epiano would sound from the out put instead of micing its internal speakers. The two uprights sounded very very good.
Hi! Is the e-piano Yamaha dgx 670?
My guesses listening from an iPad:
1-Boston Grand
2-Essex Upright
3-E-Piano
4-Steinway
5-Boston Upright
Thank was fun!
I was only looking for the Steinway and the Epiano. Found the Epiano easy but I confused the Boston grand for the Steinway.
The Steinway was easy to spot, but I was stunned by the e-piano and guessed wrong. Sorry to offend the Essex. 😂 Next to the Steinway, I liked the Boston grand sound. This was a fun experiment. Thanks for the challenge.
I only mixed up the two uprights. I am just glad I identified the Steinway and the E-piano lol
You can only hear a major difference when seated at live performances. Once it is recorded as audio format, it is hard to tell the difference between a real acoustic piano or digital piano ( recorded using direct usb to pc, not through mic). Even more difficult to tell if piano sound is mixed with different instruments on audio format. Because honestly the sampling quality of good digital pianos is very high nowadays.
