    Viserys has this bad habit of hiding behind Otto and allowing him to dominate the council, whenever someone brings up a topic the king doesn't like, he always backs down and allows Otto to take control, which empowers Otto. We see it in episode 1 when Coryls brings his concerns about the pirates, and we see it here when Rhaenyra offers a solution to the problem, both times Viserys backs down and goes quiet, giving way to Otto who uses the king's weakness to dismiss them. This is exactly what Daemon tried to warn Viserys about in the previous episode. This all stems from how Viserys was raised, he was the son of a second son, he was never raised to be king, and it shows, over a decade into his rule and he still relies on his advisors for all major decisions that he should be taking the lead on, unless it is something that enrages him, like what Daemon does to provoke him. This avoidant personality seeps into his personal life as stated in the video, he has spent six months avoiding talking seriously with Rhaenyra.

      I notice that Viserys is quite a bit like King Aenys, son of Aegon the Conqueror, in that he was weak and permissive most of the time, but stubborn when he had an idea he liked. Neither Viserys nor Aenys were very aggressive and always thought that problems could be solved through conversation or deliberation.. When Lords and the Faith began rebelling against him, Aenys was surprised that they didn’t come to him with their concerns and Viserys merely sent envoys to the free cities.

    I think culturally speaking, daughters were mostly there to just marry off for alliances and I don't think Viserys ever really gave her that much thought or consideration at all for her entire life.
    He named her heir mostly to spite his brother and prevent him from becoming King, but he still doesn't know what to do with his own daughter or know how to speak with her or deal with her.
    She was just a rather lackadaisical person who flitted about the Red Keep like a spoiled child, basically doing whatever she wanted as long as she didn't cause any disruption to "important" business, and nothing was ever expected of her so she never really strove to become anything else. But once she was named heir, she has been stepping up and changing her ways. She wants more responsibility, she wants to be involved, she wants to prepare for this role but her father didn't change at all. He still sees her the same way he always has, like she's just this "thing" that hovers around the keep and not to be given too much mind.
    If she had been a son, I fully believe Viserys would've been 100% more invested. I think he would be taking the boy under his wing, teaching him how to rule, how to do all these things, and excited to do so. But with his daughter, he just doesn't put in the effort. It's like he expects her to just somehow absorb and "learn" all this stuff somehow without being taught. He keeps saying shes so young and she will learn later, but how is she going to learn if he doesn't teach her and is constantly shooing her away? He would've treated a son very differently I think. I believe most kings would've been THRILLED at the idea of their son actually taking an interest in the nitty gritty of ruling and wanting to learn the realities of it and political complexities rather than just abusing their position for their own amusement as so many often did. But because she's a girl... He just can't and won't see her that way.
    I think her position as cup bearer at small council meetings shows this very, very well. When she was just "a girl", it didn't matter that she was the cup bearer. No one gave it any thought or cared, not even her. Nothing wrong with it. But when she became heir, she should not still be in there serving the lords she is supposed to rule one day and pouring drinks for them. They need to start seeing her as a ruler as well, not "a girl" or a cup bearer, but as a future ruling queen.
    Viserys could've made this whole situation work if he actually cared enough to put in the work, but he just doesn't. He is in grief, but I can't help but wonder how much of that grief is truly for his wife and how much is for the fact he thinks he lost his chance for a "proper" heir. I'm sure both aspects play a role.
    And Otto Hightower is perfectly content to continue to dismiss and demean the princess to make her look weak and unacceptable rather than being a loyal and true servant of the crown because his aspirations are to marry his daughter to the king, then produce an heir that will be his grandchild. That is what he wants. He will never support or help Rhaenyra. The only reason he pushed for her to become heir over Daemon was specifically because her hold on that station would be tenuous without a lot of effort and he knew neither he nor viserys would put that effort in. It leaves her in a weak position without support. He will continue to undermine her where ever he can while he keeps pushing his daughter to have kids with the king and you can rest assured if she has a boy, Otto is going to immediately say HE should be the heir, not this little girl that no one respects.
    Daemon was right, Otto isn't a loyal or faithful hand, hes a power hungry schemer like the rest of them. Daemon is abrasive and rough, but he would've made a better hand than Otto Hightower. I think having that position also would've calmed him down a bit because most of his "acting out" is because he resents the fact this schemer has the highest seat in the kingdom, other than the king, rather than family who would actually serve their family's interests. I think if he had that position, he would do a much better job than Otto.
    Daemon may not always act in the best interest of the king, but at least he would act in the best interest of the family. Otto does neither of those things.

      @annarobertson7209 Před rokem +10

      Very well said! You're right about how much effort Viserys puts into connecting with and teaching his daughter. It would be entirely different with a son. And keeping Rhaenerya as a cup bearer is insulting, now that she is named heir. I thought about that a lot when I first saw that episode. And Otto just wants a royal grandson - he doesn't even care about or connect with his own daughter. GOT and HOTD show how difficult and unfair it was for women, and I relate so much to Rhaenerya even today.

    • @squeezie_b8895
      @squeezie_b8895 Před rokem +6

      @@annarobertson7209 Cup bearer isn’t an insult historically. It’s in fact, a very honorable position and the one the crown prince would have had. It’s how children learn to lead the council - the insult actually was sending Rhaenyra away.

    • @mariagutierrezacevedo9526
      @mariagutierrezacevedo9526 Před rokem +2

      I totatlly agree with you. Viserys resented for so long not having a male heir to succeed him in the throne and we all know he only named Rhaenyra as his heir to prevent Daemon to inherit the throne and also because he came to think that he would never have a male heir. But there's one thing I still don't get about Viserys's actitude towards, not only Rhaenyra, but all of his children. He would have preferred that Rhaenyra was a boy, he always wanted a male heir, but when he finally had not only one but three (Aegon, Aemond and Daeron) he was not especially close and loving to any of them as he was to Rhaenyra and not only that, he also kept her as his heir even when everyone was expecting him to name Aegon instead. We can tell that in spite of everything, Viserys loved her eldest daughter and that she is also her favorite but nonetheless he still treats her many times like some menchandise he can use to make alliences with the most powerful families in the kingdom than his heir. He never gave her the enough support and independence in the court and in the cauncil that she deserve as his heir. We can tell that the King loves her more than the rest of his children but still he doesn't seem to deem her to be a appropiate and suitable heir to the throne. When, during the celebration of Aegon's second nameday, Rhaenyra confronted her father about why he still insists in keeping her as his heir even when he already has a son and when is clear that the lords prefer a man in the throne than a woman, Viserys replies that, she is the one that have to succeed him as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, because through her line the promised Prince of Aegon the Conqueror's prophecy will be born. This information puts a lot of things into perspective for Rhaenyra, because she realizes that her father didn't name her his heir just on a whim or as a last resort, but because he strongly believes that she is the one that Will put Aegon's prophecy in the works. However, he never really prepared her for her future role as a queen, he kept treating her pretty much as if she were only a naive and gullible little girl that doesn't know anything about the world when Rhaenyra proved to be more clever and inteligent than anyone expected her to be. Rhaenyra had a lot of potential to exploit but her father never took avantage of that and instead, he let Otto dismiss her and disauthorize her whenever he wanted, which weakened Rhaenyra's position not only with her family but also at court

    One of things I really like about Alicent and the King’s discussions. Because you see how weak-minded he is. Like during the scene where he is receiving a gift from Ali he is himself, and incredibly grateful for her thoughtfulness. But the minute someone knocks on his door-he hides the gift, sits a bit taller, and deepens his tone to fit the image of a king. He was not meant to be a King he never had what it took, and has the vessels not been sexist. The Queen who never was would’ve been a supreme choice, because she has what it takes. Plus the incest thing would’ve been lessened BECAUSE she is married to someone not closely related to her.

Honestly while watching the first two episodes I felt like he was out of place in the show. Not because of the acting (the actor is great) it's just that his character truly was better suited to be a simple family man, not a king.

    @evalationx2649 Před rokem +15

    I'm not sure why they changed this in the show tbh, Rhaenyra is very much respected at court and at the council except by one person. The entire realm has sworn their oaths of loyalty to Rhaenyra already, in the show and book, and it is accepted that she is the heir to the throne so I'm not sure why, in the show, they're being weird about it. Also they aged Alicent down ALOT and made her friends with Rhaenyra which is, an odd decision. In the book Viserys and Alicent love each other and that's why he marry's her, but the show makes it seem like Viserys is marrying her at another tempt to try for a male heir which is going to be weird when the ball really gets rolling in later episodes/seasons.
    Another weird thing is them thinking the position of cupbearer is an insult, when that would be the position a crowned prince would have too. Idk, just odd.

    I kind of disagree with the take on Viserys at dinner AT FIRST. When his daughter brought up an idea in small council, he essentially throws her out to another task and dismisses her input. When she says essentially:
    "I questioned them and found only one acceptable in my opinion"
    His response isn't "oh, we can review it" or "do you think it's the best choice?" which would be a step better than small council but still like "hmmm, idk".
    His response is: "Then it shall be so because you are automatically correct on this."
    It's a massive sign of respect in my opinion and a complete reversal, he realized he was not being a good father before, he completely abdicates to her opinion as being the best opinion by matter of fact on this, "you said it, that means it's best." And while at first she was assigned it because they wanted to remove her from the room on to another task... these are their PERSONAL GUARDS, any king that takes choosing them lightly is a short lived king.
