I use the term "mate" all the time when addressing women I don't know (retail, hospitality, etc)... I'm a big guy and find it's a really quick and easy way to put a lady at ease in my presence and let her know I'm not a creep trying to tune her...

Not sure in the US either, but as he signed off he said "Thanks a lot guys" we tend to call girls and guys "Guys" totally not uncommon to go up to a group of people or group of women and say "Hey Guys", no one would flinch at that.

    • @personbot4586

Summed it up perfectly. It's all about context. I'd call a best mate an absolute cunt to their face with the upmost love and respect while calling someone I absolutely hate a mate. It's all about the tone of voice used. As a 90's kid it's the difference between calling one person a dude and another person dude.

This shop was a little community "corner shop" which also served some of the best fish and chips in Sandgate. Probably because guys like this faithfully (and responsibly) worked the local fishing trawlers and kept the Sandgate Co-op going. He was nervous as hell, hence the "mate".
There is similar news story about a guy who was on his way home from the pub (a little worse for wear) who chased down and caught a thief from a servo in his thongs (flip flops) and stubbies (workers shorts).

Everyone is mate here... it seems male only because it sort of began with 'mateship' with our military sharing meals and playing games with the 'enemy' during the old wars... military was all men back then.
So mateship is what our culture centres around now, but its both genders.

Aww I love this video, Daniel is an awesome Aussie (and yes is it Ozzy). Good on him! I agree with what others have said... Mate is for everyone, anytime. I call my kids mate especially when they're in trouble "ah c'mon mate, you know better!". It's a good way of telling someone they're doing the wrong thing but also letting them know you're not trying to pretend you're perfect.
As to the video length I don't mind. If it's something I'm interested in I'll watch regardless. Have to admit I never watch the bit at the very end... That music annoys me. Also most of the time I watch with subtitles so I don't wake up the kids so it's nice when people put the effort in to make sure the subtitles are right. CZcams always stuffs up videos with Aussies speaking... Clearly we're hard for everyone to understand 😂😂.
Keep up the fabulous videos mates 😊.

Long or short videos depends on the video being shown. Some of the enjoyment of this video was diminished because of the numerous reactions. At some stage play the video without comment and then replay the video with comments. Mate is used by both males and females when interacting with other males and females. Its use does not discriminate. Often it can be used in an aggressive or derogatory manner depending upon the context. Sometimes it will be spoken as 'moit', usually by those with a broader accent. The man in the video is a top bloke and I would like to buy him and his mates a beer (XXXX). P.S. I dislike the terms 'guy', 'bro','dude','homie' etc. Mate I prefer 'mate'. P.P.S. In old Hollywood movies the term 'mack' was used in a similar way as 'mate'. Does this have the same meaning as 'mate'? I have not heard this term in more recent movies.

Anyone can be a mate. Doesn't matter what sex or gender they are, where they come from, or what language they speak. Everyone's a mate. :)

Mate is not gendered in Australia.
It either means friend or if the context is right it can mean enemy
