- Adrian Belew performs Drive, one of his innovative guitar compositions in part 1 of this 3 part series on the history and future of guitar sound. A variety of technology and playing techniques are demonstrated here including midi instrumentation, layering and combining effects such as echo lengths with pitch shifts, loop pedals, compound rhythm structures, time signatures as well as cutting edge guitar design. Adrian's professional career as a musician spans from the 70s to present day and includes collaboration with the Talking Heads, King Crimson, David Bowie, Frank Zappa and Nine Inch Nails among a plethora of solo work. Throughout that time he has been known as an prodigious creator and imaginative innovator with a unique style.

I've had the good fortune to see Adrian with Zappa. Talking Heads, Oingo Boing, Solo & with King Crimson. He brought something very special to all his projects. He always defined the state of the art, but used inexpensive effects run in unique paths to coax the most interesting sounds from his guitar. It seems that the equipment has finally caught up to him. He's adapted to it & mastered it. One of my favorite players.
Surprised Belew has not been tapped for more soundtrack work. Just amazing sounds. I love when he hits the heavy traffic!
I doubt very much there is other guitar player on the planet that could layer anything even remotely as cool this, under rated at every level, Ive been a fan since 1978.
Robert Fripp
@@ThePhillX hey now. King Crimson was great already before Belew he just helped move King Crimson to the next frontiers and repeatedly.
I think Robert and Adrian complemented each other better than any other guitar duo and better than they even expected when they first got together. Robert has the careful and analytical planning when it comes to composition and playing while Adrian has the edge, luster and positive energy. Both have drive and energy buth very different, and complementing of each other.
@@calebdillender1320 belew when looping is condensed time dilated frippertronics, with that fucking grin (i love belew)

He’s the happiest person you’ve ever seen. Phenomenal live performer. And great to talk wity
He's about as close as we have to a 21st Century Les Paul in terms of sheer genius and inventiveness.
Adrian Belew is a poetic genuise; a picasso on guitar.
absolutely
Steven Mearek, perfect description!
You're certainly not a 'genius' anyway.
@@valerieannshort7109 It would have been if he's spelled 'genius' correctly. But he didn't - so it isn't.
@@williamwallace5857 I feel sorry for you
THE greatest distortion guitar Artist since Jimi Hendrix....truth.
Omar Rodriguez Lopes, too)
The violin esque sound around min 4 is insane.
still love this kind of music.
Adrian Belew worked with a band from my hometown called "Crash Test Dummies"...He played guitar synthesizer on the coda for the song "God Shuffled His Feet"...It is quite beautiful and sounds fantastic...
I had no idea he played that and I'm a big Belew fan and Canadian. Cheers
amazing, just now starting to get into this guy. wow
You know to play with Frank he had to learn every song letter perfect before he was allowed in, every song no paper all by ear.
He’s awesome live. Big smile. Really nice man to talk to. A guitarist
what a top chap Adrian is!
This man is incredible. Fuck.
this is the coolest thing ive ever seen in my life! i feel inspired.
Genius...One of my favourite guitar hero!!Creative musician and brilliant guy 👨🏻🎓
Thanks for creating this program in Chicago. I know many Chicago musicians and very happy to see Adrian here performing and sharing insights about his life and career.
Very cool. Excellent post.
Living legend
Thank you for posting these videos.
The force is strong with this one. Cheers!
Love his excitement face when the heavy sound start in whatever he's playing. Awesome
way past time for this type of music not to be in mainstream... Tired of all the heavy metal and power chords... just gets old. Love his innovative spirit and attitude. Thank you Adrian!!!
c' est toujours bon, thank's Adrian.
To the critics here, I looked on your page, don't see any videos of you playing the Chicago Humanities Festival, please forward the link in the reply section below.
such a genius
lovely!!!
I saw Adrian Belew on Cruise to the Edge in 2022 twice. It was wonderful.
Adrian is a MUST see before you die! I really mean that, his live show is incredible.
He used to live in Springfield, IL on MaCarthur Blvd years ago and was even listed in the phone book. There used to be a studio called Cwazy Wabbit in town and I think he spent some time there recording as well.
Fixed! Thanks for the heads-up.
I am so happy I will see him live in Atlanta on Sunday...
I watched parts 2, 3, and now part 1. Mr. Belew is as original as it gets. Bravo!
he was in tom-tom club, too!
i'll bow to that one. Well done sir!
Entirely original.Love it !
Alucinante¡
I've just watched a Zappa solo and a Fripp's frippertronic and then this video, It's 7:39 am and I didnt go to bed yet.and I'm gonna pick mi guitar.
muy bueno!!!
Pure genius
Thanks mate.
Thank you.
This is nice. I'd be a snob about a lot of this gear, but my admiration for Adrian's long history of truly expressive guitar leads me to let my guard down.
NIIIICE!
wow it lives the guitar does
the magic of a fifth of jack and a bottle of prozac
Happy Birthday Adrian!
Brilliant genius ...
This guy radiates pure joy when playing! A duo I would like to hear - Bill Frisell & Adrian Belew...
Just bought tickets to see him at the City Winery March 10th...
Really fucking cool. I like how he approaches guitar music. Almost like a synthesizer of sorts.
I love that look on his face, like, "Holy shit guys did you hear what I just did there? That was fuckin' awesome, right?"
Adrian Belew, John Frusciante, Jimmy Page, Graig Ross are such great guitar players, I really love Adrian Belew when he was playing with Talking Heads in the Remain in light tour, absolutely amazing.
His guitar sounds like an Indian singer, phrases going from point A to point B in the most interesting way. He must be taking the most interesting scenic route!
anyone know when the new king crimson album comes out?
Beautiful, just beautiful. Critics? They better be incredible musicians.
This is the go to guy you put on your record if you have good material and want it multi-layered to stand the test of time. Listen to Boys Keep Swinging from Lodger. Still holds up beautifully.
Reminds me of NEU!
I can see that.
cool
All hail NIN new guitarist!
How to make sound like violin please tell me
Can you believe this man helped bring back N I N ? Bowie, Zappa, David Byrne, Robert Fripp can't ALL be wrong?
Think how archaic MIDI was back in the day
I use to play with hold delays long time ago .
He is doing great job it's not easy to control all this effects.
But motiv is unending you can play 24 hours like that.
Perhaps the most underrated guitarist...ever?
How can someone be underrated when he played with Zappa, Bowie, Fripp, Byrne? The masses don't know him, but the great artitsts do!
If you measure "underrated" by the ratio of talent to wealth and fame, he is very underrated.
3:06 I am in heaven.
amazing and he looks like a skinny Charlie marno from tales from the crypt even cooler and btw pat Obrien brought me here
Shit… I discover him only now and I’m 61… ouf ! Not too late.
So if you are making negative comments the I expect to see n hear your guitar wizardry to prove your better... we musicians are all family and should praise the works of others... Got it?
Belew and Kraftwerk what a wonderful combo.
The question we should all ask is "Is he happy?" Hahaha Himself & Fripp are dynamite.
Adrian Belew is to guitar what Terry Bozzio is to drums. "Yes, I've mastered my craft. But I want to do...more."
Does anybody know what kind of chair that is that Adrian is sitting in???
It's a Swopper.
+wink abbink I'm wondering if by chance you also know the kind of rug ?
Emmanuel Istace Not I.
What is it about Parker guitars that you dislike?
Holy shit he’s so underrated
What was the little high pitched thing that he did at 1:40?
He strummed the strings behind the nut of the guitar.
Zappa, Bowie,King Crimson and Talking Heads all had his talent for a while
Anyone know what scale he is using
It's the synth harmonies, it's set up to a particular mode, sounds like dorian he's playing a major scale on top of that polytonal bliss,
Anyone know what brand the stool he is sitting on is? I have to have that! It moves slightly as he pulses with his playing which must be fantastic.
DjinnGSXR Thanks!
A musical Wizard entrancing all around
Why isn't King Crimson mentioned in the description as part of his career?
Chalk it up to Indiscipline.
I won't argue that Adrian isn't accomplished, but the real star here is the pedal board and sonic tools that can make a single note sustain with reverb, delay, and chorus. Without the effects, the single note would simply be a short tone without impact. I was doing this as a guitar experimentalist in my youth. Real artisan play would look like a Segovia.
I think it's an Adrian Belew signature model Parker Fly (DF842)
Genius - deal with it...
Ditto, and Adrian's got a Sustainiac® sustainer system installed on it - the neck humbucker (technically Sustainiac® driver) gives it away ))
Can somebody help me please! I've been seeing this this guitar in some vids and still don't know who makes them?!? I can't make out the fabricator of this type of guitar, so anyone!!! Thxs.
It's a Parker Fly. lightweight. not cheap.
what about Robert Fripp?
Wow. He's sitting on a Swopper. I have one of those.
Steve Rieghenburg.
Adrian is such a fantastic guitarist. I was sorely disappointed to hear that Adrian won't be joining the new King Crimson this September 2014. They've replaced him a drummer! (kidding). The final lineup tally is 3 drummers (Pat Mastelloto, Bill Rieflin, Gavin Harrison), 2 guitarists (Bob and Jacko Jakszyk), 1 reed (Mel Collins) and the redoubtable Mr. Levin on the low end.
You forgot Robert Fripp.
***** No I called him Bob. Though I'm sure he hasn't gone by that name in 30+ years;-)
Darrylizer1 I'm glad Belew wasn't is the new KC line-up. I thought he stole the show when Fripp was the main attraction.
***** After seeing the new line up in San Francisco I gotta say that Belew wasn't missed. The new band is pretty amazing.
Darrylizer1 the new KC lineup's pretty boring... considering some stuff I saw
Always loved AB, never really embrased bill frazel,
Why?
trippiest shit ever? I'm sorry, did we mysteriously get whisked away to a Pink Floyd concert without my realizing ?
I hear Calexico - Pepita... :)
I would too. But im the kind of guy who listens to music in headphones while lying in bed.
me gusto mas la parte 3 =)
Foe!
Thank You Henry Rollins for introducing me to this wonderful man.
I’ve been playing for 13 years, I don’t sound anything like that. My guitar must be broken. [sigh]
Ricky Tenderkiss, keep listening to great music and don't quit.
