Casemiro is not a bad buy, there's a reason United are playing better since he came back from injury. Him and Mainoo are by far United's best midfield partnership. Casemiro is the best midfielder at United at the moment. The only issue with Caemiro is his age, but he's playing well at the moment.

it was a bad buy. A bad buy can still be a good player. there's no longevity in signing an old casemiro, it's another one of Uniteds reactionary signings. How can you target de jong and then end up desperately signing an entirely different profile of player two games into the season. It's not a criticism of casemiro, it's a criticism of Uniteds brainless recruitment. It's not that difficult to see it's a bad buy, ask yourself would city, Liverpool or arsenal have blown 60m on a player that age? no chance.

@@rohitrajendran94 I think sadly your mentality is everything that's wrong with the United fans (and most fans of big clubs). We didn't need "to win a trophy". When a new manager comes in, the absolute priority is to develop a cohesive playing style. This is often achieved AT THE EXPENSE of trophies. Peps first season at city was trophyless and they were further away from winning the title than under pellegrini. This is because the club agreed that in year one, trophies didn't matter. The objective was to build a foundation that they could rely upon for the next decade. This is what happened. Pep built a system that they're now winning the champions league and consecutive Premier league with. This is the blueprint.
What isn't a blueprint for success in this short termism that you and a lot of fans insist upon of WIN US A TROPHY, ANY TROPHY IT DOESN'T MATTER WHICH ONE JUST WIN US SOMETHING. We were awful in the carabao Cup run, there was no sign of a great team being built as 7hag didn't bother to actually build any kind of system, he just went for the lowest hanging fruit in winning the carabao cup. The end result of such mindless thinking was to end up where we are now, regularly getting battered by bottom of the table clubs.
I just don't get how United fans in particular still haven't realised that establishing a style of play is worth a million tin pot trophies. But nah, they still go on about how Mourinho was brilliant at United because he cheesed a league cup and Europa league with the shittest football imaginable

You can't credit Dan Ashworth with Newcastle's signings. He simply hasn't been there long enough to make a big impact. All clubs have a head scout that does the hard work. The media just seem to be obsessed with signings.

The problem is not just buying- its selling too and the incredible wages they pay- which makes selling difficult. Antony was an atrocious deal. He will be loaned off till his contract ends and will be worth nothing when he eventually leaves for free. Casemiro - again will leave for free 2 years down the line. He will be useless next season as his legs give way. Man Utd are very poor at selling. Such as Lingard and Pogba. After 2018 World Cup Man Utd could easily have gotten 60-70 million for Pogba. I'm not sure about this appointment, he's safe but very average.
Ashworth joined Newcastle AFTER their best signings were already done/in the works:
Trippier and Bruno were signed BEFORE Ashworth, Howe had already identified Gordon, Livramento and Barnes, the scouts identified Isak and Botman - hence the links so soon before some of them signed.
Lewis Hall is an awful Ashworth signing and he did push for Pope which has been a good signing, but his record is hit and miss. Some of the youngsters he's pushed for have looked completely out of their depth.
Ask Brighton fans, it was Weir who led the signings of Cucurella and Caicedo, and he was the one who was there to push for De Zerbi. Typical Ashworth signings there were decent enough: Welbeck being a prime example, but nothing special.
I don't think he's worth it. He's steady, not spectacular. A good stepping stone for Man U, but £6m+ for him feels like having their pants pulled down.

Didn't mention the salaries of these players. Take Rashford for example, he got a raise to almost 400K a week last summer and he's been consistently underperforming ever since. United clearly need to look at their wage structure on top of clearing out the deadwood and bringing in quality players that are worth their true market value.

Simon assessment overall is pretty close. We "did" make enough money to deal with FFP before the Glazers started taking money out of the club, not paying down the doubt, overpaying for players, putting players on crazy wages that we can't even give away when we don't want them anymore, not investing in updating training facilities and finally the worst thing has been letting Old Trafford become an embarrassment to the point it's cheaper to build a new stadium.

It's not that Utd have paid a certain amount for a player in a position, it's that Utd have consistently paid higher than what they are valued at which makes them look stupid and incompetent. If your paying £80mil for a CB that is world class then that is fine, but when you pay that for an average or below player is where the issue comes from. They over pay and under deliver on every single signing. Other clubs see them coming a mile off, stick a massive price tag on them knowing they have no clue and no plan.

While I think Casemiro is a very good player for United, I can definitely understand the view of him being a bad buy. For 70m and the wages he does need, I’d argue, 4 very good years to justify the price. At the moment he’s had most of a year playing well and 6 months with lack of fitness / injury.
If United had any strategy they would have been negotiating with Madrid very early on and potentially got him for maybe 40-50 (considering it is well known they were replacing him anyway) and additionally invested in a developmental player to eventually take over
