Over the years after listening and owning over 200 decks I have realized that almost all decks sound great when played with properly recorded tapes but only a handful record with crystal clear quality and that is where the difference is! Everyone praises the nakamichi decks and i agree they do sound great when played but not all record well. I started comparing recording levels among dolby b, c, s and than hx pro and realized that dolby hx pro tops all of them. I even tried auto tune for specific tape types and it turns out it is better to have manual control over any tape and record the sound as you feel it sounds great better for your ears rather than what auto-tune recommends based on certain tape types and son on as long as you can get a crystal clear recording sound. I found that aiwa, sony, akai high end models record with crystal clear quality even though I like naks better for their sound and appearance but recording is off somewhat as all naks can only record with dolby c at best.

Dolby stinks. I never used it. It destroys all the highs and makes sound muffled.
Record with high bias tape, especially Metal tape, at the highest levels just below absolute peak, and avoiding distortion from saturation. Dolby was meant to eliminate tape hiss present at low levels in the recordings. But it just masks high end presence completely and, ironically, it sounds like you are listening to a TAPE playback when you play it back.
