    I am an HVAC major and the reasoning behind the delay in the blower is probably due to it taking time to heat the air up. In other words, the air hasn't had time to be heated up yet so if the blower comes on instantly it will be blasting the exterior ambient temperature at you since it hasn't had time to heat up yet.

    • @nodak81
      @nodak81 Před 5 lety +4

      Personally, I couldn't care less about how a CVT drives. My hatred stems from their lack of durability. Imagine if you bought a car with an engine timing belt, except that the belt wasn't replaceable and you just had to replace your entire engine when the belt broke. Well, that's exactly how a CVT transmission is.

    • @Jaymac720
      @Jaymac720 Před 5 lety +3

      Nodak81 I agree but durability isn’t an enormous problem when they’re used properly, that being in a small car with not a lot of power. The problems start when they’re mated to V6s with 250+ horsepower in 4500 lb SUVs. The Elantra is a compact economy car. A CVT makes sense

    I’ve been trying to find a good review as it’s so new and so many reviewers in general don’t go into the differences between model years and usually focus on the highest end trims (to be fair, it’s probably what they’re given to review with) - I’m hoping to get a ‘Luxury’ model up here in Canada, which is the first trim level to get leather, blah blah, similar to the Limited trim in the U.S. but it’s wonderful to see how many features come base and how responsive the systems are.
    I love the new aggressive look, the previous design was great! Definitely compared to the clown face of earlier Elantras, but this has a road presence and honestly, I’ve done big chrome grill look with the Fusion and it’s a bit played at this point, I’m glad they ‘spiced’ it with the sharp angles.
    Thank you for this review!

    It’s absolutely fascinating to me, how different the Americans trims are from the ones we have here in Canada. I drive a 2020 Preferred (I assume equivalent to the value edition but not sure).
    Here are some differences I noticed:
    Dual climate zone in the American model… mine still has the old style dials.
    Leather wrapped steering wheel in mine, but basic on the American model
    Forward collision sensor, and lane departure in the American one… mine doesn’t have either, but does have blindspot warning.
    Mine does not have Sirius XM at all available, the American one does.
    Mine has the cup holder that folds out of the centre console, unlike the American one.
    Mine has heated front seats, and heated steering wheel unlike the American one.
    My 2020 has LED daytime running lights, but I understand rules are different on DRLs in the USA.
    Also small thing, but mine has the lights above the sun visors.
    It’s just interesting that they’re so similar yet so different. Never really thought abt that before

    For those that don’t like the CVT...get over it! Yes, the early generation suffered from noise and reliability issues, as well as a different sensory experience that many found unpleasant. The newer designs have addressed these concerns, including a simulated “shift” sensation, which personally I find silly in a non-sports car, but if it makes people more comfortable, so be it. The reality is they will be with us for the foreseeable future given the added performance and fuel economy they eek out of smaller motors. The 41 MPG in this Elantra is within hybrid territory, without the need for more complex and expensive solutions. For most daily drivers, a modern CVT works just fine.😊

    • @nodak81
      @nodak81 Před 5 lety +5

      Not sure where you came up with the fantasy idea that they're suddenly reliable. A CVT belt WILL break and seemingly tend to do so right after the warranty expires. It's an inherently weak design. If you change your car every couple years then it'll probably be fine, but if (like me) you keep your cars for many years then it's just a ticking time bomb.

    • @curiously1510
      @curiously1510 Před 5 lety +2

      @@nodak81 Not fantasy, but rather the typical life-cycle of most mechanical design. The early 8/9 speed geared transmissions had reliability issues just as the CVT, but both are improving as the engineers benefit from real world experience. No car company will survive with a reputation as being unsafe or unreliable, so they have a strong incentive to continually enhance their products. I get that a mature design is inherently less risky than something new, but the challenge for the manufacturers is to achieve the mandated corporate fuel economy average, while still offering affordable models. With currently available technology, the CVT is part of that strategy for low and mid-range priced vehicles.

The "CHAIN" isn't going to break anywhere near the rubber belts life expectancy. Unless you're stupid and constantly engine break or switch between reverse and drive while in slow roll, fail to do regular transmission fluid maintenance, etc. This is on the 2.0 model. Hyundai offered traditional automatic, but then, everyone who whined about CVT was whining about low MPG and even competition SUVs with CVT sold like hotcakes lol.
    So naturally Hyundai brought in CVT and gave it as an option, just for the smaller entries(they are still sticking to non-CVT for SUVs at least)
    ,but now ppl are complaining about CVT again when they got the MPG and quiet cabin

    • @BG-ig6fd
      @BG-ig6fd Před 5 lety

      Yeah, I guess some CVTs weren’t good. This is an IVT, an improved variation on the CVT. We test drove both a 2019 Kia Forte and a 2020 Elantra with the IVT and we really liked them. Does not feel like other CVTs. Smooth, quiet and best gas mileage in a non-hybrid/electric car. If they’re durable, we actually prefer this transmission. We were thinking of leasing one first, just to make sure there are no problems with it.

      There's nothing wrong with CVT for an economy car. It's being equipped with a chain belt, not a rubber belt. If you want a car equipped with standard automatic, then go with the 1.8 sport. The base car without turbo was not meant for speed or power. The reality is the CVT will be perfect for the standard 2.0, especially if they can preset past a the current 6 speed. Maybe an 8 speed.

    Another nice review, guys! One aspect of my 2018 Elantra I'm not thrilled with is the 6-spd auto transmissions behavior. Driving around the city, it shifts too much and acts confused at 30 and 40mph. I am thinking of replacing it with a 2020 Elantra for the CVT to eliminate the constant shifting and shift shock I experience with the city driving I do, but haven't driven a 2020 yet. I'm disappointed hear the CVT's artificial shifts are firm and abrupt. I was hoping they would be smooth and seamless, since no gears are actually changing, just ratio changes within the CVT. That may be a deal breaker for me, but still worth a test drive. I'd appreciate having the standard auto climate control as well. I was spoiled by it with my last car. I'm also thinking I may get the SE instead of the SEL. Although I do use it fairly often, I'm not a fan of using the Android Auto. I only use it regularly for the navigation and I'd say about 25% of the time using it, the system crashes and takes a couple minutes to bring my route back up. Total pain when you're navigating in the city and turns happen frequently. My old Garmin was a lot more trustworthy.
