Titanic's Only "Black" Family - After Titanic Sank

  • Once Olivier Mendez discovered the Joseph LaRoche had been a passenger on the Titanic, the story was spread and then it became the story of a black family that had been on board the Titanic. That just was not the case. Regardless, Joseph LaRoche - the French & Haitian man of the family went down with the ship. His body was never recovered. So he was never buried, but half of his ancestry was.
    When I said that his wife LITERALLY buried his blackness, that’s what I meant. LITERALLY. As in, Mrs. LaRoche took every photo of Joseph along with every ID card or paper that referred to him as black, Haitian, or African, and she put them in a chest and buried them in her backyard. But, maybe she had a good reason. Decide for yourself.

      Same here! I managed to get to the Titanic traveling exhibition in its Kansas City, Union Station, MO stop back in the early 2000’s. Some of the authentic pieces they displayed were amazing. Especially the architectural (these were replicas of course) of rooms and furniture were astounding. If it ever tours again and you have the chance to view it, I think you all would really enjoy it! If you haven’t seen it, of course. I’m hoping for a second chance.

    I remember reading about this family years ago in an Ebony article in the late 1990s early 2000s. The headline read the only “black” family on the titanic. This was so good! Horrible tragedy! When I was in the military stationed in Oklahoma, I went to the Titanic Exhibit with my then wife & infant son. They had so many of the artifacts retrieved from the wreckage. When we entered they gave us tickets. They were 2nd Class just like this family had with the names of the people on them. We went through the whole exhibit, saw all of the artifacts & then at the very end when we were ready to leave, they took our tickets & told us what happened. The wife survived with their infant Son but as was the case with many of the 2nd Class men who put the women & children first, I went down with the ship. It was very sobering & really brought the point home of how families like this were ripped apart by this terrible tragedy! Great Tour if you ever get to take it, I highly recommend it!

She bore him a son which he never got to meet as he when down with the ship but inshurance money was sent to the mother. One family member in England researching his great grand father's death discovered copies of the reciets and traced down and found his Jamaican family that he had and the story was in the local news paper.

    • @nelleidle6610
      @nelleidle6610 Před rokem

      @BlackGirlLovesAnime6 Women and children first wasnt a standard for a very long time. Prior to 1852 during shipwrecks it was a "every man for himself" situation. This only started the change after the 1852 sinking of the HMS Birkenhead
      In 1852 the Royal Navy Troopship, HMS Birkenhead struck rocks while transporting Troops and their families. Because of having the discipline of being in the military orders were made to split up the men to operate the chain pumps, lower the lifeboats and the rest to stand on one end of the ship to use their weight to balance the keel of the ship. Even as the ship was being broken up only 3 men attempted to make for the lifeboats with the women and children, the rest stayed in formation as ordered.
      During the rescue it was noted all of the women and children survived along with 173 men of diffrent ranks. The men of the Birkenhead were branded as heros for saving their women and children and not leaving them to parish. As it was so popular it was the attempted for most rescue situations, with a fair bit of unreliability.
      Unreliability like the sinking of the Northfleet in which 86 of the 379 souls were rescued. Of those 86, was the Capitan's wife, a female passenger, and two were children. Those were the only women and children rescued from the ship. On the Evening Star, wrecked 1866, the women were even locked in their cabins by the male crew, because of the possibility of "the danger of hysteria on the delicate female mind".
      The occasional practice of 'women and children first' mostly fizzled out after the suffregette movement. As the suffregettes pushed for the vulnerable (the disabled or sick, the weak, the elderly, and children) should be loaded first no matter their sex. Which was the the standard practice until boats were legally required to carry enough lifeboats for all of their passengers.

    If she buried her husband or his family's blackness, it's possible Juliet was trying to erase his side of the family from her life and the children. This probably upset his mother which is why she never saw them again. Of course we can only speculate, but I couldn't imagine losing a child and not wanting to have his children in my life.

    • @tiahnarodriguez3809
      @tiahnarodriguez3809 Před rokem +7

      Considering this time period this may be true, but the reason she returns to France instead of going to Haiti like she and Joseph originally planned was because no one was there to receive her when she and her daughters got off the rescue boat, so she returns to France to be with her family. After she gave birth to her third child by Joseph, she makes him Joseph in honor of her husband. It appears she didn’t find shame in her husband’s or children’s blackness, but you never know. I know some people don’t keep in touch with their deceased spouses family because of how awkward it can be because they feel like they no longer have anything tying them to their spouses family, so I get it, but I think another possible reason could be Louise was so effected by these events she chose to live a quiet life which was not unusual for this time period.
      Edit: I did more research, and it truly was common for sieving wives who lost their husbands to return to their home country with their kids and live quiet lives.

I did my daughters ancestry dna and built her daddy's family tree based on census and other records plus distant cousin dna matches that had parallel family branches. So my hubby's 4th great grandparents were white and traced one of the grandparents right to Queen consort Mary of France , sister to King Henry the 8th. So my husband has European royal ancestry and likely African royalty ancestry. I'm white and have some of my husband's same royal lines lol. So example my hubby and I both related to King Henry the 8th. So take a dna people and you will find we are all connected. I’m really surprised by these comments. There wasn’t a single black person on that boat. This man was mixed race, his wife was white, and his daughters were only a quarter black….. how does that make them a black family.
    It’s only Americans who call mixed people black. Emancipation from the slave doctrine of the one drop rule is a must.
    You’re only black if you have a black mother and father. It’s a shame that American blacks can’t find pride in that. It seems they need some whiteness to have a claim on their humanity…..it’s tragic!

I think hey were all so traumatized by the lost of the husband/father and him being Black that they never recovered. Maybe the girls were afraid to marry for fear of having dark skinned children. This is such a sad story, to survive all of that to be invaded by the Nazi, these people of color must have been out of their minds with fear. Yes, but she had been the daughter of a well to do wine merchant so she was no bottom of the barrel. Appears he openly embraced his black son in law. All he required was he finish his education. His mother? Royal snobbery? Racial bigotry? Who can say for certain. In some cases blacks can be just as bad as whites. Sounds like Juliette was doing what any mother would do. Trying to protect her kids from wrath of the Nazis.

    I just found your Channel and I love it. I am a student of history and enjoy the presentation of your documentory's. Not for the Gossip aspect, though it is entertaining but for the history. I must admire Mrs. LaRoche of how she protected, raised and kept her family together. I am a romantic at heart and how she burried her husbands "blackness" as you say, to me was protecting her children and keeping her Husband close with the symbolic burrying of her husbands identity. If it were shame, she would have burned them not placed in a chest and burryed in her yard. Great video. Maybe a video on her son?
