How to repair trainers

  • Are you about to throw away your favourite trainers or shoes? They were supposed to last for ever but the sole has just come off! Stop! If the shoes are still in decent condition apart from the fact that the soles are separating from the uppers you can glue the parts back together.
To glue the shoe properly, all surfaces must be tightly pressed together. A piece of hard material shaped to fit the inside will make this possible. As I didn't have anything the right shape I cut a piece of wood. It may take a bit of time to prepare the material but don’t be discouraged, once done you can use it many times if you have to repair more shoes - as long as they same size!
Most people think any heavy object will do to keep the parts together but I'd recommend spring clams as they will press tightly in exactly the right places. Remember that there is no universal glue, so read the label carefully to find out what your glue is suitable for and how to use it. Most brands for leather or rubber will do as long as they give a flexible bond (I found that 'Fantastic elastic' did the trick perfectly). Your shoes need to flex as you walk and run; if you do a sloppy job it will fall apart again very quickly so be patient and take your time.
Watch my video to see how to fix your trainers so you don't have to purchase a new pair, they will soon be as good as new (almost!)

Yes, the trainers are still OK. It's a bit more time consuming but works really well. You can re-use the piece of wood for different shoes same size.
