Shaye is a human metronome. I always enjoy how she sets the pace for every song, very discreetly, yet efficiently.

I agree vondahe Shaye’s in charge. She starts the beat and signals in all the solos. Did you notice the sideways glance to Erika to let her know to start singing. She even signals the outro! She is the boss of a superb group of musicians.

Erica whow ! Such a pure voice, every note sung with deep feeling and totally in tune, never wavering or wanting in any way. No one exist today such as this greatly tallented lady. Not to detract from the others in the band, because they are each and every one of them talented too, but they all remain subdued in this particular song, to give Erica the spotlight of attention she richly deserves.
That's the truth.
Better than "in tune". She deftly bends minor and major thirds, sometimes using more than one pitch on a single note. Thirds are notoriously problematic in equal-temperament.

She's the epitomy of a "blues singer." A torch singer, a chanteuse with the moves, and the lyrical human memory of the tired, sweaty, acapella, untrained, raw-voiced women that sang in the turpentine camps ten decades in the past. I close my eyes, and Tuba Skinny washes the dust of 100 years from me. I smell the smoke, the human sweat, the shine, the unpainted wood, the southern woods and I hear that voice telling me the stories of lust, betrayal, revenge. For a moment, I relax; I remember being young.

She certainly is, and in this genre' uses 'plain voice', i.e. w/o intonation, shifts, modulations. A basic 'down home' presentation, which is, of course, perfect for the tone and manner of the group. Shaye Cohn! The multi-instrumental titular leader of this group, and others as well, provides so much to the presence and experience. Not to take anything from the others, they are excellent, and have the talents to perform anywhere.

I just love looking at Shaye's face when she plays. She's like somewhere in side.......her playing does all the work, and speaks for itself. She never seems to engage in the facial or other gymnastics that soloists seem to do. I love Tuba Skinny.

They were discussing the possibility of including all the members of "Tuba Skinny" in their own orchestras. Damn skippy, this is music without bullshit. Does it get better than this? I think it doesn't? Listening to Erika is like home, so easy, comfortable, like being on my mother's breast. Safe, sound and cared for. I'm saying this is what Erika's voice and handling of the songs makes me feel like. Right or wrong the combination of her singing and Shaye's direction and playing makes me happy. Thank you all, think you for real.

After seeing this great band live, it’s dawned on me that they are not just a traditional jazz outfit but a brilliant blues outfit too. They are all talented musicians and their sum total quite magnificent. Catch them while you can.
Great jazz bands can jazz up any music - blues, waltz, ballad, rag, country - whatever. It's about the swing, not the form.

I think Tuba Skinny is unimaginable without the hypnotic voice of Erika, all the other band members, but most of all without Shaye's almost invisible cues. Maybe I'm wrong, but why do I read so much sadness in her eyes?

LOVE it ! I really like how TS blows "big", but not overly brassy, notes - which he sometimes does. Soft, but full , "fat" tonality. It's a "concert bass horn" - which has a clearer sound than the Sousaphone - depending on the player, of course. .

Shaye's obbligatos are amazing! A lost art, missing from most "trad jazz". She has more freedom to do this in the smaller band. Love this Rhinebeck session.
