    • @robertbruce6865
      @robertbruce6865 Před 3 lety +1

      Agreed. Having been a fan of theirs for some 40 years now, I honestly believe that Weider is every bit as good of a guitarist as Robbie. Not Robbie bashing here, since I’m a fan of his, but simply acknowledging Weider’s talent. Saw them in Chicago in April 96. Sat about 10 yards from Garth, my keyboard hero (I play keys and a bit of guitar). A great night. Even got a “salute” from Levon!
      If you enjoy Weider here, check out his solo from It Makes No Difference from their performance in Germany, 1996; the concert is posted on CZcams. Blistering.
      Also, there’s concert video from one of their performances with Billy Preston’s brief time in The Band on CZcams. It’s worth a watch. Preston joined after Stan Szelest passed away in 90. One reviewer called his time in The Band an embarrassment. I kindly disagree. Preston and Hudson in the same band. Wow! Two of the best ever.

      @@robertbruce6865 I haven't looked at this in a while. I'm no expert, but the issue was whether the rest of the band (The Band) shared in the songwriting. Levon Helm said the anger and heartbreak over the claim of sole authorship was what shortened Rick Danko's life.
      Who knows? One thing I can say for sure, though, is that every time I see Robbie Robertson on some retrospective interview he is arrogant and syrupy, someone I wouldn't cross the street to hear play or sing. We all get a chance at life, play the chance for better or worse, then we are gone. I like to think we get another chance.

    • @robertbruce6865
      @robertbruce6865 Před rokem +3

      @@johnhamilton5290 What shortened Danko’s life was his decades-long addictions to narcotics. He admitted in an interview later in life that he spent an estimated $100,000 to $200,000 ANNUALLY on drugs. He cleaned up during his stay in a Japanese jail, then relapsed just before he died. Jim Weider said that Rick and his wife had been evicted from their home and were living in a motel, and that Weider tried to get Rick to get to a doctor for help in cleaning up. Danko, severely obese, went out on the road instead. He died two days after his last show in Ann Arbor, Mi.
      Lack of credits didn’t kill him; the only song that Danko himself complained about was “Twilight”. An exceptionally poor lifestyle killed him. I love Levon, but that was reaching.

    • @robertbruce6865

      @@johnhamilton5290 I won’t argue your point about Robertson. He has had his cringeworthy moments. I’ll just say that I agree with Band insiders like John Simon, Ronnie Hawkins, and Jonathan Taplin...all of whom have said that Robbie wrote the songs that Richard didn’t write. Even Larry Campbell...Levon’s righthand guy for the last decade or so of Levon’s life...said that Levon’s bitterness was irrational. Ronnie Hawkins, who knew Levon from the age of 15 on, said that Levon’s Heroin addiction in the 70’s changed his personality significantly: he became meaner when he had always been a happy-go-lucky guy.
