- 今回は、日本語でよく使われる言葉の１つ「懐かしい」について話したいと思います。
残念ながら、「懐かしい」は英語に直訳しにくい言葉ですから、ネイティブだったら、なんと言うか解説したいと思います。

30年くらい前に、私が英語を習っていたアメリカ人の女性は、「懐かしい」と言う時に"It's so nostalgic!"と言ってましたが、この30年で、英語が変化したと言う事でしょうね。或いは、アメリカ英語とイギリス英語の違いもあるのか？By the way, I love your Scottish accent.
「It reminds me of ~~~.」とか「It brings back my memories when ~~~.」と言いたいです。What do you think?

For example, you're looking at old photos with a friend:

NYに何十年も住んでます。Adamさんの英語聞いているとインド系の方達の英語のアクセントに似ているなぁと感じます。なんでだろう？ ちなみにココでは、ノスタルジックも使う人が以外と居ますし、最初の説明のようなリメンバーで話す人もいます。両者とも生粋のアメリカ人です。

Are you saying in this video that the English speaking people never use "nostalgia/nostalgic" in daily conversation (because they sound too formal or for some other reason)? or are you saying that they never use them to express what is meant by "懐かしい、懐かしむ気持ち" in Japanese (because they do not mean "懐かしい、懐かしむ気持ち" at all)? Could you tell me which one (or what) you intended to convey? The reason why I am asking this is that in Japanese "懐かしい、懐かしむ気持ち", though having lots of very complicating meanings, implies "a feeling of missing like when you are far away from home," and I believe that it is exactly meant by "nostalgia/nostalgic (I am afraid that I may be wrong, but for your information, according to Cambridge dictionary "nostalgic" means "a feeling of pleasure and also slight sadness when you think about things that happened in the past," and we Japanese use "懐かしい" for that)." Among the three examples shown in this video that include "nostalgic," one example is translated into Japanese, which says "ニンテンドーは金儲けに「懐かしさ」を使うのが上手です." It seems to me that it is perfectly fine to be translated that way, but to the English speaking people is it grammatically wrong for "nostalgia" never means "懐かしさ"? To answer your question: both!
1 - Nostalgic / nostalgia isn’t used in daily conversions.
2 - Native speakers don’t use nostalgic / nostalgia to convey 懐かしい気持ち like the way Japanese people use 懐かしい.
As I say in the video, native speakers often use ‘remember’ and ‘question tags’ to convey 懐かしい気持ち.
For the example about music:
“I remember first hearing this song when I was in high school.” (高校生の時、初めてこの歌を聴いたことを覚えている)
自然な日本語で: 「わー、この曲、懐かしい」
You can say, “oh this song is so nostalgic. It reminds me of high school.”
However, this doesn’t sound like a native speaker.
Ultimately, you can use nostalgic / nostalgia (like you use 懐かしい) if you want, but it doesn’t sound natural.
If you watch English TV / movies, if you come to the UK and talk to someone about old things (high school/ an old movie/song), they won’t use ‘nostalgia’ or ‘nostalgic’.
They will use other words to convey the 懐かしい feeling 😃

アメリカに住んでますが、友人が大学時代の街について nostalgic と言うのに nostalgic を使ってました。
イギリス英語とアメリカ英語の違いですかね。
初めてドイツを訪れた時、初めて来た場所なのに、なんだか懐かしい気持ちになりました。
この時の感情をいつも英語で表現出来ないんですが、どう言ったらいいんでしょう？
I would say,
"I don't know why but it's like I've been here before."
（なぜかわからないけど、ここに来たことがあるって感。）
OR
"Even though it's my first time, It feels like I've been here before."
初めてここに来たけど、なんか来たことがある気がする。）
