My Grandpa Has Dementia: When Caregivers Need Help

  • What help is there for dementia? Where can dementia caregivers find support? For Bethany’s grandpa, it’s at St Luke’s ElderCare’s dementia day care where they engage the elderly with reminiscence therapy, cognitive activities and reality orientation therapy.
At first, William's dementia symptoms included forgetfulness and confusion. But then the wandering and getting lost began - he even found a way out after the family padlocked the gate. That's when Bethany's mum Geraldine, who was William's main caregiver, decided to put him in day care.
Much of the video was filmed before Singapore’s COVID-19 ‘circuit breaker’ when care facilities were suspended. Since reopening, the centres now take precautions such as safe distancing and smaller group activities.

Elderly Singaporeans with dementia are very lucky to have a care centre where there are lots of activities to keep them occupied while at the same time relieving the family members of burden. I hope that Malaysia can set up elderly care centres too but it is a pipe dream in the near term

Thanks for the video, CNA Insider and also to William's family for sharing their story.
Dementia is something close to my heart as it happened to my mom as well. It came gradually and we mistaken it as being forgetful until she was clinically diagnosed. There was a period of confusion coming to cope and accept the situation and it came to pass after we enrolled mom for dementia daycare. She is now spending her days fruitfully through the daycare centre activities.

My grandpa also has Dementia. He was diagnosed with mix dementia this year. I was in shock because he was fine until my grandma passed away. Doctors say that my grandpa’s Dementia could be cause because of depression. We could see he was sad but we didn’t know he was going through that. Now, after 3 or more months diagnosed, he is living well. He forgot less because if exercise and moving quite often.

It’s not strange at all. They have anxiety and can’t remember why they are there sometimes, hence they have to go somewhere in search of something they don’t even know themselves. My father is 78 and he climbs over fences with spikes sometimes.. and at times when the main gate is unlocked, he slips out very fast.

At least, this happened in Singapore. If the grandfather went out without telling his family in any other country, the consequences would have been so much more severe. Whew, but it's still pretty important to have access to help/support.

the main problem is not patients themselves but the family members..there will be heavy sadness, arguments, even fights, controlling, within family members..as some will think dad is still dad, believing dad can improve..while caregiver already know is a disease just getting worst each passing day..caregiver usually dont Get the family support ..in terms of financial, or same alignment of thinking how to take care patient in long run..or even family members helping to takeover look after dad while caregiver can have a full day break..eventually this if not sorted out well..when dementia patient die, it’s family bonding no longer there as resentment is always there within the family, & caregiver will breakdown , wounded for life..SAD

I came from rural area of Malaysia which is mostly r farmers...and seriously most of the elders in my hometown still strong physically & mentally...I guess it must be b'cos of the work they been doing...my grandfather was lived until 97 and my grandmother 95...in town area where I work...usually people will slowly stop productive after they retired where they will stay at home, going cofee shop (which is the cause of diabetes) & redo the routine for the next day...I would like if this lifestyle can be change...but what can we say to elders...some of them are very stubborn😅

Try eating 2 tablespoons of pure coconut oil a day (unprocessed, unrefined basically un anything)to help dementia. We've been giving it to an elderly in the family and he is getting better.
    I hope this helps🤗
