Looking After Helen | Singapore's Elderly Poor

- Alone for 17 years after her husband died, Helen was falling prey to dementia, loneliness and squalor in her one-room flat. Until this turned her life around.
This is part of a special package on elderly poverty in Singapore, Myanmar, Vietnam and South Korea: www.channelnewsasia.com/news/c...
She is an adorable old lady. Elderly people really want to just talk to someone as they get really lonely. This breaks my heart because i have grandmas and grandpas that i cannot spend a lot of time with. They are always happy whenever they get to talk to their family or just anyone in general
I think so too...
And its nice there is someone there to help her.
Would you perhaps consider helping my grandma move back home? Even 5 dollars would help.
Please at least share this gofundme!

Love how she laughs!!! So cute lah you auntie!!!!
Lies again? FOX NEWS Loo Kansas
Aww shes so cute!
Yes. Although she has dementia but i think her positive personality is the most important factor it was never robbed from here even with her conditions. I believe a person's character plays a lot of importance in the face of an illness. There are dementia patients who are not as easy to look after and complying as her. Some will throw tantrums the whole day through and will need a caregiver 24 hours looking after them.
When I was working as a nursing assistant at a nursing home. You start to get to know them and what happened in their life. They just want someone to talk to to love them for them. I remember this lady that started calling me her granddaughter because I was the only one that took the time to get to know her. After I left I would still take the time to visit her twice a week and bring her things she needed. I miss you Robin 😢💔
I thought i was the only one who cried watching this... omgd so touching i love volunteering and doing things like this cause it teaches me not to take my parents for granted and appreciate all the good things in life 😢❤️
Today my son showed this video& we both cried..Old age is inevitable.. dying in loneliness is heart wrenching..czcams.com/video/gep6UGZm6h4/video.html

I'm in tears
She struggled n worked hard in the earlier history of Singapore's nation building , sacrifice much for her nation, may be it is time Singapore should make her later living a bit easier , nothing wrong for government to provide some safety net to these senior citizens once they retired and financial assistance with their big national financial reserve.
FULLY AGREE!!!!!!!
I cry when I watched this video. The aunt is so cute and cheerful!!
Yes , that’s what other people says , l had clicked like button
The emotional effect of watching someone deteriorate in front of your eyes is heartbreaking. She's a wonderful and spirited person. I am happy she is doing better and getting the help she needs.
Unfortunately she passed away November 2018.

At least they are lucky to live in SG where the gov and NGO look after the senior citizens well. Thumbs up for Singapore 👍
fuck off pap shill
Allison dont be rude
Allison Why?
Look deeper my friend...
the gov does the bare minimum. social welfare is hard to come by around here. a few hundred dollars isn't going to provide anybody with even the bare necessities. if you go to food courts/ public toilets, you'll see a ton of old folks struggling through menial and low paid jobs. not to 'stay active' or because they enjoy it. because they need to eat. it's time sg as a self declared 'first world country' (nah fam we ain't) followed the example of other actually socially progressive countries.
Thank you to these Singaporeans for taking care of one another. Really great work you people are doing. I too hope to contribute in my way to resolving these social issues.
Thank you Singapore and all the volunteers and social workers for taking care of the elderly.
Good job, Amala! I hope there are more people like her.
She’s way better looked after than many in the UK. They’d never have two people taking her out.i think it’s wonderful. Xx
She is such a cheerful and cute lady! I wish her well!
My mother since she was young was a clean and organized woman. She never sought helped from anybody. She wants to live alone, manage herself and her money. Nobody can control her. She hates being controlled. She's now 83 yrs old and still is strong for her age and still lives by herself.
Salute to ms amala! Well deserve recognition for hardwork and humane activities.
This lady reminds me of my late grandma.. I called her Oma.. My Oma lived together with my late uncle just few blocks away from my house. I visited her only to bring lunch sometimes, but I didn't enter her house and didn't spend much to chat and accompany her. This lady on the video, have the same cheerfulness and voice tone with my late grandma everytime she saw me. But now everything is only in the past, I have missed the oportunity to chat and cherish her, and I regret that. Hopefully everyone who still have grandparents and elders can cherish everymoment you can share with them... because the time is actually running out...
So heart warming, if this inspired you to help others, like the comment
This is so meaningful. Thank you for being there for the lonely elderly.
Dear Helen hopefully you are okay during this pandemic
Spread LOVE all over Singapore........Keep up the good work!Time to volunteer myself.Thank

May God bless you Auntie Helen with good health & happiness..More ppl to visit and chat with you soon! And to Ms.Amala thank you so much for taking care of the seniors you're an inspiration to me.Kudos!
Kindness is so underrated! We must harness and spread it!
Lurve Aunty Helen's happy smiling face.. ❤..Her sweet and kind nature so welcoming to anyone who comes yo visit her😊
I think social service can arrange daytrips to Singapore zoo, bird park, local tourists spots, some diy crafts sessions, old movies screening, go sentosa, etc. If there is no funding, please a funding channel for supports, I am very sure many pple will be excited to help out and show their supports for the campaign. Always stay home is not that good as it gets boring prolonged.
May lord bless u all for taking care of the old folk🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬 Proud to be a Singaporean 🇸🇬🇸🇬
My school showed this vid to us to appreciate elderly and our lives! Our class thought she was very cute and sweet
Thanks for being kind. .
Appreciate very much. . 💖
Such a heartwarming video! Love it! Such an amazing lady! Super cute! Amazing!
It's so sad to see lonely elderly people. I feel very badly for her.
By our American standards that's a nice ass apartment for elderly poverty. And also that is one adorable grandma
Thumbs up for all volunteers !
I love these elderly people they so cute and funny when talking
Wow, compare this to HongKong...Singapore government has a very big heart.
Breaks my heart. In the Philippines, children takes great care of their parents. I don't know how to explain it, but its in our bloods. We highly respect our elderly.
I highly missed my grandmother who had a stroke when I was 11. We had taken great care of her until her death in age 83, just when I turned 14.
Kudos to the Singaporean Social Services. The world should learn more from you.
We have great people in this world
she is so joyful.
This reminds me of my late opah, ms Ahmala ure a great human!
Thank you Singaporeans for caring for the elderly.
What a sweet person. May god bless her.
This makes me think of my late grandma. I regret that I didnt spend enough time with her until today. Please for those who still have grandparents at home, spend time with them while you still can.. May mdm helen be happy and healthy always.

Would you please consider at least sharing this gofundme for my grandma?
www.gofundme.com/1sjmha8gao
She too was hard working, and a hero to my family, as she supported all of us until she became poor and stuck in a city she hates with raising space rent, and only 1,200 from social security to live on. I work a min wage job and help out, and am going to school to do better, but I wont be able to do more than keep her here in the city she hates for at least several years. At 79, I don't know if she can wait that long...
She cries, because Petaluma is the only place she calls home, and ever since I was born, she said she wanted to go back, but as she ages, she looses hope, and cries and is depressed over it because she thinks there is no hope and she will die here without ever going back home...
Please at least share, as that can do alot, and if you even gave 5 dollars, it would be appreciated more than you will ever know!
So sweet....granny helen..so sweet and cheerful. Thumbs up for the social worker 😊
She's very kind and cool!! Keep her safe!!

She's adorable! Everytime she sees a person putside her door, she let them in😍

Aww 😍 her pretty morning song in the beginning
I miss my late grandmom.
Everytime watching those elderlies makes me really sad. Loneliness is really a suffering for them. If you still have parents, please love them and take care of them respectfully. They didn't complain when brought us from a baby to become adult. Don't you complain when taking care of them when they're old. Love them, give them attention, don't disappoint them
This aunty is an angel

I don’t know which is worse…..being a single care recipient. Or being a single caregiver to a super difficult care receipient.

I am surprised they know how to sing Chan Ma Li chan, Di mana dia anak kambing saya..
I am so happy to be Malaysian. We are so lucky. On average we are living
in luxuries. Our compound are so huge and eat whatever we want.
Snob to the highest level and brag at its finest. Only when God gives you sickness and you are bed ridden then you will realise your compound, luxuries and food means nothing to you then being healthy with your love ones around.
I wonder how shes doing rn
Where are her children and grandchildren?
