Having farmers such as yourselves discuss their humbling failures or challenges, is one of the most genuine acts in helping others understand that dealing with failure or adversity is part of being successful in life and business. Great video.
I really like the drone picture of your beds and the tunnel. you have fantastic potential. I would suggest you use all tunnel space for growing and set up a shed for wash and pack between this tunnel, your out door plots and future tunnels. It would only take an hour to toss all that stuff outdoors. If you need space for starting transplants but do not have a heated greenhouse yet, build one it will triple your production. If that is a next year projection use saw horses set up a temporary bench at the end wall. We have 4 tunnels.

I have sure felt the overwhelming feeling of not being organized this year and just like you have stuff everywhere and no home for any of it. This is my second year and thought I would have more time to do other things other than harvest and plant. I was surprised in a good way that there is so many wanting produce I haven't been able to keep up with demand. I pretty much have had everyone come to me asking if I had stuff to sell them making it hard to get any organizing done. I do 3 farmers market and one restaurant currently and a grocery store and an aggregator would like to me to grow things for them too but at 80-100 hours a week I just can't do more by myself. In our area, one other and myself are the only young ones farming (35-40 yo) and the rest of them are retired in their 60-70's not looking to do any expansion and doing bare minimum. Lots of room for growth here.
Mat Prather good to hear. I hear a lot of folks talking about labor saving tools, which are great, but I think spending the winter getting super organized saves just as much labor week to week at much less cost!

I have a high tunnel that I got though the NRCS High Tunnel Grant. It's a great program. I'm actually putting up my second one up right now. I've picked 12k pounds of tomatoes out of it this year. Check it out!!

For heaven sake at least get a A few cheap sawhorses and get it up so you don’t have to work on the floor. Until you can get around to building permanent benches and structures
Lindell Hughes you’re so right, except my overhead wobblers also water the trays when they’re on pallets and wouldn’t reach that high. Six in one, I guess..
Watching this in 2023, locking in that 3.25% is looking real good. But they sold in 2021 to capitalize on the real estate value.
What qualifications were expected for you to get that beginner farmer loan through the usda? Did you have to show proof of income from other farming ventures? A certain amount of years running a biz on leased land? Certain amount of years managing other farms?
Blank Noriega some experience on a farm (we had 3 years interning and we’re leading land with a 40 member CSA at the time of the loan application), a business plan, financial literacy, enterprise budgets, etc. The loan officer walked us through every piece of paperwork and was super helpful/patient.

Total interest on this great deal loan is something like 75k. Compounding interest sucks folks.
I called USDA where I am and they had no clue about greenhouse grant

NRCS accepts and processes EQIP applications on a continuous basis. However, each state may establish deadlines for one or more application periods in which to consider eligible applications for funding.
Applications submitted after these dates will be evaluated and considered for funding during later funding opportunities.
Producers must submit a complete program application and other documentation to support eligibility to be considered for financial assistance through EQIP.

Do you travel far to sell your produce? Or do you have on the farm sales?
Kentucky & Tennesse are 2 states with low property prices. Average income for customers is lower too (no sale for $4 # tomatoes or $12 # salad mix, like here in wisc).. I think the beauty of the state is still a plus.
Yeah, we’re pushing the limits with our prices because we’re one of the few more-or-less organic growers marketing to the nearest city (30 miles), but not able to ask for some of the higher price points. Think $9/# salad mix and $3/# tomatoes.
By the way in our area 10 acres would cost you $400,000.

If you add on renovations to the bone to make it livable for our family and the tunnel, it’s more like $150k, but still totally manageable. One of our strategies was to keep our annual payment low enough that, worst case scenario, one of us could pick up some side work and cover it relatively easily. That said, we’re in a marketplace without a substantial amount of demand, so six in one half dozen in the other?
