  • I recently picked up (and repaired) one of these little cameras and I'm happy I did, it's pretty sweet. In this video I talk about buying, fixing, and shooting the camera.

    I literally just bought the exact one on ebay for a good deal as well and your pictures just made me even more excited to start shooting!! thank you SO much for this video!

    Got one for free from a friend who had it laying around his house for years. I'm loving it so much, ive found a lot of point and shoots that are clunky and odd to use, but the stylus zoom is so much fun to use.

    Just picked a really good conditioned one for $8 at a thrift store. 🙌

    I was mostly just watching this video to see some photo examples from this camera (which of course, I got, and was very impressed with btw) but I ended up finding this video even more helpful than just that! I literally just found one of these in a goodwill for $5 (crazy, right?) and the film window is missing in mine as well. for now I may just cover it with some tape, but I didn’t even consider replacing the entire back door! I will have to look into that. thanks!!

    I loved my Stylus Zoom back in the day, and I still think it's the perfect shape for a camera that's going to be taken everywhere, congratulations on finding one for just $35! Never knew about the spot feature though. And the ProImage and ColorPlus films looked great. As for light leaks or similar anomalies, after having it a few years I noticed sometimes there was kind of a ring shape that showed up lighter in some of the pictures, maybe some kind of reflection or something?

    • @zachpav1
      @zachpav1  Před 2 lety +1

      The ring shape is probably a light leak through the barrel of the lens. The rubber seals tend shrink over time when they dry up.

    Hi. Nice images! Very sharp. What method did you use for scanning the film? I've had the same camera for many years, got it in Hong Kong while on holiday in 1995 and it took lots of good pics. Its not been used since all the 1 hour labs closed years ago. I'd like to try it again as it still works when I put a battery in it a few days ago.

      Thank you! I scan with my digital camera, but there are plenty of labs still around developing and scanning film, highly recommend sending film to Memphis film lab if you can’t find a local place 👍🏻.

    I recently got one of these cameras in great condition, iexcept it doesn't seem to be recognizing/picking up the film. Do you have any tips on how to go about resolving this? It doesn't show the film counter, and I can tell it's not advancing the film

    Hi Zachary! Can you advise on fixing this camera when it flashes the Error message?

    • @zachpav1
      @zachpav1  Před 3 lety

      Hey, unfortunately electronic complications with these cameras are almost always unfixable :( The only thing that is reparable really is the light seals...taking off the back plate and door is very easily done with a JIS screw driver set, which could potentially help you ID an issue.

    Found 2 of these at the thrift store for $8!! Just got the film back and they both work ahhh I can’t believe my luck! I’m new to film and wondering if you had any suggestions of which film to use on this camera? :)

    I recently got this camera, and wanted to ask how you taped the back of the camera. I would also like to ask how would you know where the light leak was coming from

    • @Kcruz1400
      @Kcruz1400 Před 2 lety

      Also would like to know where did you buy the replacement door for this camera?

    • @zachpav1
      @zachpav1  Před 2 lety +1

      Gaffers tape, 100% worth it, leaves no residue when you peel it off. Light leaks from different sources show in a lot of different ways, it was just a matter of matching up what the light leaks in my camera looked like vs other leaks of confirmed origins. I knew what the leak through the lens barrel looked like which is really common for these camera, and did a test roll comparing shots with tape on the back vs no tape on the back. Tape on the back gave me no leaks so it was clear that’s where the leak was coming from.
      As for the back door I just googled it and found a small shop had one for sale.

    The Zoom## models are of the same family as the Olympus Stylus, right? Why is it that they cost less than the Olympus Stylus? Is it because they are bigger?

    • @zachpav1
      @zachpav1  Před 2 lety +3

      Yea they’re the same line of cameras as every other Olympus stylus or Olympus mju (which is just different branding schemes for different regional markets)
      The cost difference comes down to a few things I think. Hype being the main reason. People are looking for alternatives to the Contax t2’s and Yashica t4’s and the like, the mju/stylus is arguably the the next best thing. The other is that the fixed lens versions have sharper and faster lenses. People tend to think all film era zoom lenses are bad but that’s really not the case, there are plenty that are good, they just tend to not have as fast base apertures. If I have my facts straight then beat selling version of this camera was actually the zoom 115 version. It’s more so that the differences between the zooms and fixed lens versions is that trade off for better low light performance for more zoom range, and the reality is that most of Olympus’ point and shoot lenses are sharp enough for a point and shoot.
