I think the problem with comparing Wayne's feature run with Kendrick's is that Wayne was under some pressure to put out music to stay relevant while in difficult contract disputes with Cash Money. I'm happy he did stayed moving because we got some really good music out of it, but the motivations are completely different.
When he dropped DAMN in 2018 he was working on black panther album, he was working with baby Ken. I saw were he was supposed to drop in summer 2020. Then we had Covid. I just think that’s why we had the big gap.
Cole slander is insane. Without Wayne’s feature run he wouldn’t be in the top-10 discussion. Most of his catalogue aged like milk unless you’re just a cash money fan (I am). Dot had his feature run early in his career, Cole started his later that’s the only difference.

The long break narrative was always just a narrative, he’s dropped consistently from 2004 to 2017, aside from the gap from training day mixtape to c4 and damn and mr morale he’s been pretty consistent especially with the albums he’s giving us 🤷♂️

I strongly hope Kendrick continues to move like Prince, who never allowed his fans nor the media to dictate the direction of his art and creativity. This is why I am proud of Andre 3k and his flute album. It takes a lot of heart, courage, and tenacity to be true to thyself because society be pushing to mold folk into something else in order to go along to get along.
I think influence is the last box, he checks every other box. Influence comes with age though and he is relatively young. Jay Z, Nas, Rakim, Eminem, etc all have this ahead of him. So we will see what the lasting impact of his legacy is from years to come. Especially if the west coast is able ro reestablish itself to the forefront of rap. We will look back to this moment as a key point in history.

I love the idea of Kendrick going on a westcoast feature run. Would help quiet some of the critocs, and would be a great look for regional-only acts, who are looking to break out nationally. Do I think a feature run is necessary to become a goat tho? In short, no. I'm all about the quality of an artist catalogue at the end of the day, so if you deliver great, cohesive bodies of work, I can care less how many features you killed. Ican easily see Kendrick making something dope with artists like Rucci, Westside Boogie, RjMrLA, or even a fun party song with the likes of the Cuzzos or Shoreline Mafia. Kendrick's already done collabs with artists like YG, Dom Kennedy, MC Eiht and Problem/Jason Martin, but it would be dope to see new collabs.
The feel I always get from Kendrick's music is that Kendrick is his own biggest competition in his own mind. There is some version of himself that he wants to realise...even more so after Mr. Morale. So, unless he reaches the point - I do not think his to do list is done. Moreover, the ideal Kendrick Lamar in probably evolving in his mind and he has to course correct. As long as having a feature run is part of hid ideal Kendrick, we'll get it eventually... At his own pace.
I’m pretty sure K-Dot had a pretty solid feature run from 2014-2018. But if you mean another feature run post Not Like Us, another feature run wouldn’t be a bad idea… Like Dot on a song with The Internet or Steve Lacy would be dope. And another feature run would just torment Aubrey further.

I would like him to release albums more often. When you have have 5 years in between projects in Hip Hop it builds expectations too high and sets up some of your fan base for disappointment.
I think most of Canada would be thrilled if Kendrick took his victory lap tour through the country, but with the Hells Angels connection, that adds a threat that works outside of the public opinion. A lot of Canadians don't rock with Drake, even if they like his music, they don't embrace him like Compton embraces Drake. Even in Toronto, he's not universally loved.
Dunk contest analogy was spot on 👌🏾 I’d enjoy a feature run just for the thrill. It’s exciting when Kendrick pops out (all pun intended) but it’s not necessary. Kendrick 🐐 already established.
Comparing what has been done before is the strategy that made Drake lose the battle. He tried to repeat what was done before and Kendrick outmaneuvered that. Kendrick is one of those artists that can get away dropping something every 3 to 5 years and he doesn't have to saturate that.
Kendrick hasn’t been following a formula so far so why would what he’s missing from his catalog (other folk’s formulaic standard for greatness as a rapper/artist) be the next thing he’d do or should do? Kendrick said at the pop out that unifying the folks on stage was what this was all about. This battle with Drake clearly serves multiple purposes for Kendrick and so it might be shortsighted to focus solely on Drake being the biggest challenge (goal) in this moment as being Kendrick’s only source of motivation/inspiration. I’d say expand the view to include ideals/values. Building Compton unity and pride is a clear example of a challenge he’s also taken on in this moment that motivates/inspires him. Battling with Drake was a means to an end to get there.

Nah. I disagree with you on that feature run argument, Justin. I'm a Cole fan, and I can tell you that Cole's feature run is mild and civilised compared to the madness Kendrick was doing on features from all the way back in the Overly Dedicated days to the TPAB era - including his BET cypher. There was never a single time Kendrick got on a joint with other rappers and didn't either steal the show or at least switch the entire energy in the room. And I'm talking real MCs here, from Eminem to JayZ to Cole himself (check out 'They Ready') to Busta to the entire prime MMG crew all once ('Power Circle), and so on. Just stop. There are two clear reasons a lot of the main rappers rarely feature that guy anymore: (1) He bodied the hell out of you and you don't want the world to hear it (2) He bodied you so beautifully you are waiting for the right album/moment to put it out for the world to hear it.

I don’t agree with the feature thing. One of the things that made the goat he is is his ability to control his art and messaging. And you can see that by the way he doesn’t do features that much in his albums. He rarely features other rappers in his albums coz they risk to mess up his concepts and art.

I strongly hope Kendrick continues to move like Prince, who never allowed his fans nor the media to dictate the direction of his art and creativity. This is why I am proud of Andre 3k and his flute album. It takes a lot of heart, courage, and tenacity to be true to thyself because society be pushing to mold folk into something else in order to go along to get along.
I think influence is the last box, he checks every other box.
Influence comes with age though and he is relatively young. Jay Z, Nas, Rakim, Eminem, etc all have this ahead of him. So we will see what the lasting impact of his legacy is from years to come.
Especially if the west coast is able ro reestablish itself to the forefront of rap. We will look back to this moment as a key point in history.

I love the idea of Kendrick going on a westcoast feature run. Would help quiet some of the critocs, and would be a great look for regional-only acts, who are looking to break out nationally. Do I think a feature run is necessary to become a goat tho? In short, no. I'm all about the quality of an artist catalogue at the end of the day, so if you deliver great, cohesive bodies of work, I can care less how many features you killed. Ican easily see Kendrick making something dope with artists like Rucci, Westside Boogie, RjMrLA, or even a fun party song with the likes of the Cuzzos or Shoreline Mafia. Kendrick's already done collabs with artists like YG, Dom Kennedy, MC Eiht and Problem/Jason Martin, but it would be dope to see new collabs.
I like this idea too- but the premise that Kendrick needs to “up” his feature game is totally wrong.
The feel I always get from Kendrick's music is that Kendrick is his own biggest competition in his own mind.
There is some version of himself that he wants to realise...even more so after Mr. Morale.
So, unless he reaches the point - I do not think his to do list is done.
Moreover, the ideal Kendrick Lamar in probably evolving in his mind and he has to course correct.
As long as having a feature run is part of hid ideal Kendrick, we'll get it eventually... At his own pace.

I'd like to see Kendrick do some collabs with a) less well known US rappers, b) producers and rappers from.outside the US and c) Toronto rappers.
I would like him to release albums more often. When you have have 5 years in between projects in Hip Hop it builds expectations too high and sets up some of your fan base for disappointment.
I don't think Kendrick needs that long feature list. I like how Kendrick handles his career as is. It allows us to not get sick of him too soon.

I think most of Canada would be thrilled if Kendrick took his victory lap tour through the country, but with the Hells Angels connection, that adds a threat that works outside of the public opinion. A lot of Canadians don't rock with Drake, even if they like his music, they don't embrace him like Compton embraces Drake. Even in Toronto, he's not universally loved.

Comparing what has been done before is the strategy that made Drake lose the battle. He tried to repeat what was done before and Kendrick outmaneuvered that. Kendrick is one of those artists that can get away dropping something every 3 to 5 years and he doesn't have to saturate that.

Kendrick hasn’t been following a formula so far so why would what he’s missing from his catalog (other folk’s formulaic standard for greatness as a rapper/artist) be the next thing he’d do or should do?
Kendrick said at the pop out that unifying the folks on stage was what this was all about. This battle with Drake clearly serves multiple purposes for Kendrick and so it might be shortsighted to focus solely on Drake being the biggest challenge (goal) in this moment as being Kendrick’s only source of motivation/inspiration.
I’d say expand the view to include ideals/values. Building Compton unity and pride is a clear example of a challenge he’s also taken on in this moment that motivates/inspires him. Battling with Drake was a means to an end to get there.

I'm a Cole fan, and I can tell you that Cole's feature run is mild and civilised compared to the madness Kendrick was doing on features from all the way back in the Overly Dedicated days to the TPAB era - including his BET cypher. There was never a single time Kendrick got on a joint with other rappers and didn't either steal the show or at least switch the entire energy in the room. And I'm talking real MCs here, from Eminem to JayZ to Cole himself (check out 'They Ready') to Busta to the entire prime MMG crew all once ('Power Circle), and so on. Just stop.
There are two clear reasons a lot of the main rappers rarely feature that guy anymore: (1) He bodied the hell out of you and you don't want the world to hear it (2) He bodied you so beautifully you are waiting for the right album/moment to put it out for the world to hear it.
