I’m highly annoyed. As a black man, I’m from New York born and raised. There’s a thing every year called the Puerto Rican Day parade. Even though it’s inclusive and anyone can go including me, I’ve gone I’ve never said hey this should be called the black and Puerto Rican day parade. No, it’s the Puerto Rican Day parade. And the fact that he didn’t even know what Juneteenth was. I would never watch his show.

Furthermore, even lfty gnply's notion of Mexican pride often contains elements of anti-Blackness. The narrative of "I don't say the N word" isn't about respecting Black people or their culture; it's more about emphasizing the differences and divisions between Mexican and Black communities. Additionally, there's criticism towards Northern Mexicans for collaborating and unifying with the Black community, suggesting they've lost their cultural identity. This is another divisive stance.
Moreover, it’s peculiar that discussions about cultural identity and authenticity are centered around a musical genre created by another ethnicity. (HIPHOP)

I was born 98 and soo many Black people dismiss the anti Blackness, violence, discrimination, and hate they have towards Black americans after our people helped them into the US through the civil rights movement. All that hate from the 80s and 90s is STILL present today. This “Black and Brown” unity is a farce. It is ONE way, using us to gain and access to resources and then turn around and say we are “lazy and less than them”. They say Mejorar la Raza!

Of course we're a huge influence in LA culture and lifestyle, but this is beyond that. I won't even attempt to describe the meaning of this monumental event. We have our shit and rarely do we invite other peoples into it (why!?!?!?!) so why are we tripping on this? As a Mexican who loves and grew up with rap, I find this obnoxious and dumb. Rap will always be an extension of African American culture, period.
Point 2: LA gang politics have run the streets for decades, and growing up, many Mexicans did not get along with Black people. Let's keep it real.
Point 3: I know the sentiment is quite small in our cultures. I always felt Black and brown people are two of the same. So, I never had a problem looking up to influential Black individuals. I never felt underrepresented, especially in rap.
Point 4: I want Latinos/Hispanics to be represented, not just Mexicans. That includes Belizeans, Panamanians, Salvadorans, Guatemalans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Cubans, etc. Also, it was a Juneteenth event, and we should be celebrating with folks, not trying to take their shine.
I don't understand why they won't bring out their rappers and have an event and that will solve that problem.

As a mexican, this type of "celebrate our persecution too" mentality is something ive seen a lot of times. Its the combination of immigrants being racist solely off stereotypes and hear say because theres a cultural and language disconnect. And them wishing the immigrant struggle (a very different struggle) got talked about as much as the black struggle. I'm only 7 mins in. But i just wanna say, in California prison culture (which has high populations of California gangs), there are a lot of politics that go on involving race and business. It's well known that Latino and White power gangs do a lot of business together and leave out the black gangs. Sort of an alliance based around keeping each other more powerful.
It is also well known that Mexican gangs were attacking black civilians in LA neighbourhoods just based on gang proximity.
So Juneteenth is a celebration regarding freedom from slavery. Kendrick wanted to unify as many of his own people as celebration. Why would he include those who ally with white power gangs? He didn't even include The Game who allied with Drake, and that was a non violent conflict.

I'm a Mexican in LA that couldn't afford tickets to The Pop Out.
I was so mad, but honestly the fact that it was Juneteenth made me feel better BECAUSE this was a Juneteenth celebration, and so not especially for me.
Wonder what their thoughts are on black Mexicans and how they are treated and not represented in Mexico.

This was a celebration of black people, specitialy of the west coast and more specifically from California, that's why YG, Tyler, Dre, Ab, Q, Jay and many more were there. This man does not represent all Mexicans. Insane how little he knows yet how much he yapped. As a Mexican, I thoroughly enjoyed the concert and the thought of under representation didn’t cross my mind.
Maaaaaaaaaan. So I don't represent anyone but myself and I'm not speaking for the community; but unfortunately, the sentiment being shared is not too uncommon (at least anecdotally.) I've heard it from other Mexican-Americans, and unfortunately , it's always during hardship. E.g. the protests during 2020.
It's like trying to win the pick-me minority gymnastics. ("No, we're more [oppressed, etc]) It's super frustrating.
In hip-hop in particular, like you have touched on, the cultural cache feels like an entitlement; forgetting we're still guests-and guests that arrived to a culture that wasn't allowed to have boundaries. Dude's a clown and that's a non-apology.
Just a note, May 5th is not something super observed in Mexico. It's more for the gringos here.

Lol as a Black man born in America but with Jamaican parents I don't go to Juneteenth events and ask why they aren't playing Dancehall or Reggae. Heck when my Black American friends come with me to Caribbean carnival events (which celebrate the end of slavery as well) they don't ask why there isn't more Hip-hop being played. Folks are celebrating their specific culture and you want to be represented for what bro, do you go to St.Patrick day parades and ask to perform?
I had a great time at the west indian day parade in brooklyn every year. It's so much fun.

I actually just learned that some Black Mexicans do celebrate Juneteenth, as it was Black Americans who left Oklahoma during slavery went to Mexico and helped defend its borders. The brother Czech channel he actually travels to the Black Town in Mexico. The Underground Railroad went in several directions I've learned recently. Florida, The Great Dismal Swamp, Nova Scotia, Mexico. Any others?

For the black Mexican! There were 200,000 plus west African slaves in Mexico. There is a thriving Afro Mexican population. They are part of diaspora

as a mexican it just seems like for some reason latino rap artist just feel that they could use that word because they said it growing up and nobody ever confronted them about it and by the time they make it big like 6ix 9ine, lil pump, or all these cali artist, it seems to take a backburner in the conversation. its also just a cycle because the latinos who listen to these artist are probably also saying the n word in their day to day life and just don't care or are ignorant of its significance and it all just happens all over again and breeds more up and coming artist. idk what the solution to this would be because, growing up in predominantly Mexican neighborhoods, people get really defensive when you call them out on it

Why would they be "represented" in a celebration of the end of our ancestors slavery? I have plenty of latin homies and dated latin women, but not once have I been invited to Cinco de Mayo, Sept. 16th or Holy Week, nor should I have been cuz that shit wasn't for or about me. Juneteenth isn't about them.
At least a lot of the live chat is telling him he’s wrong. I just don’t understand why everyone feels Black People have to be inclusive, but are never inclusive with Black People. Also, the show is called “KEN AND FRIENDS” everyone he brought out was his friends from Black Hippy to Dre. There was also “HED AND FRIENDS” and “MUSTARD AND FRIENDS”. There’s whole Mexican holidays where they indulge in their culture…I never see Black People involved in those. Mexicans and Asians in general usually work against the Black community in whole, while we lead Civil Rights debates…only for other races to get what they want and leave us still holding the bag to fight alone. Then we get blamed for the violence towards other communities to get bills passed to protect them…while other communities attack us and we’re still unprotected. I’m going to stop because this conversation pisses me off, and my defense will make me sound hateful when I’m not.

I’m mixed and grew up in Dallas with my black family. We always celebrated Juneteenth from as far back as I could remember. It was wild when I moved to the north in my high school years whenever Juneteenth came around I would tell my homies and it was crazy to me seeing people not even know what that holiday was back then. Let’s keep it 100 how many people both in and out of the culture even knew about Juneteenth before the date became recognized.

It's been very interesting seeing the shift. I'm from California. Always knew about the holiday but never celebrated as I understood it was more of a Texas Black thing and I don't have any TX roots. It's been wild to see people who never thought about this holiday now be on some super gatekeeper shit, as if their not just learning about the origins of this along with the rest of the country
@@TheCompanyMan aboslutely. my comment could've been worded better but what I was getting at is there will be a misunderstanding when it comes to what the day represents because of the lack of educational awareness on it. Now that's an entire other conversation to have lol but as you said grace is the biggest part. It also goes to show the awareness of Tulsa. My momma told me about black wallstreet when I was young because of a paper she was writing in her undergrad on it. There was national awareness to the tragedy around the same time of Juneteenth national awareness (to an extent.) There were many other incidents before and after Tulsa. But the fact that because of the mideducation this dude tried to connect these two entirely seperate historical events because the two had trended together nationally in close proximity some years ago. I understand why he made the connection but it's important to also be educated on this shit because it's BLACK history which is already extremely underrepresented as is.

I was there, and I could've swore there were afrolatinos on stage. At any rate, the Chicano community was deep in the stands, and one even shook my hand and hugged me and told me Happy Juneteenth.
This is why I never liked being called a person of color. I am black, an American descendent of slavery. My history is complex and unique and I am not interested in it being diluted or whitewashed.
Btw I love Mexico and its culture. I don’t go to a Vincente Fernandez concert & get upset because they didn’t invite the black house heads from Chicago.
Other ethnic groups feel *entitled* to inclusion in everything African American/Black Americans do. And I include other black folks too. They feel they should be included and in some cases *centered* in our stuff. It stems from them not respecting we are a distinct people/group. That said, this doesn't surprise me.
And please peep how loud and wrong he was the entire time, yet still saying it with his full chest. I can almost guarantee that if this was a carnival event this wouldn't even be a conversation because they *respect* that people from the Caribbean have distinct traditions.
