Biodiversity is the key to life on Earth and reviving our damaged planet, says ecologist Thomas Crowther. Sharing the inside story of his headline-making research on reforestation, which led to the UN's viral Trillion Trees Campaign, Crowther introduces Restor: an expansive, informative platform built to enable anyone, anywhere to help restore the biodiversity of Earth's ecosystems.
This talk was part of the Countdown Global Launch on 10.10.2020. (Watch the full event here: • [Replay] Watch the Cou... .) Countdown is TED's global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at countdown.ted.com/sign-up

Restoring biodiversity means assisting damaged or destroyed ecosystems. It usually involves bringing back lost species that are found naturally in the area. That is why it is important to identify what naturally lives in the area you want to restore.👍

Everything he said about the importance of restoring not only trees, but a natural ecosystem that includes trees begs the question- "Why are we destroying these rich old growth forests?" For a hamburger? For the brief taste of other animal products?
"While the wildfires raging in the Amazon rainforest may constitute an “international crisis,” they are hardly an accident.
The vast majority of the fires have been set by loggers and ranchers to clear land for cattle. The practice is on the rise, encouraged by Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s populist pro-business president, who is backed by the country’s so-called “beef caucus.”
While this may be business as usual for Brazil’s beef farmers, the rest of the world is looking on in horror.
So, for those wondering how they could help save the rainforest, known as “the planet’s lungs” for producing about 20% of the world’s oxygen, the answer may be simple. Eat less meat."- CNN
Another reason they burn the Amazon is to grow soy. "More than three-quarters (77%) of global soy is fed to livestock for meat and dairy production. Most of the rest is used for biofuels, industry or vegetable oils. Just 7% of soy is used directly for human food products such as tofu, soy milk, edamame beans, and tempeh." -Our World in Data

Because of the pandemic, we now have proof of just how much our "activity" damages the enviroment. Everyone that looked outside in April and May and smelled the air, watched the waters, and witnessed wildlife on our streets cannot deny anymore just how much impact we do on our planet.

It’s one thing to know the association between wildlife and a humans well being and actually experiencing it. I grew up in a part of FL where I was surrounded by wildlife, our family garden is wild. I really took for granted the sounds of the rain hitting the trees that surround our house and the birds chirping in the morning. When I left to study in NY... I found my self unable to sleep, feeling anxious, I had to set my Alexa up play those noises for me, but it really isn’t the same. Every time I visit home I can’t wait for the days it rained and the sound of the birds, and digging my hand in the soil to plant new fruits or other plants. I loved this video so much because I wish other people knew how important the string is to our life and everything around it... most importantly our wildlife ❤️

An amazing talk, I have been preaching the same truth for decades, but as I no longer work in academia many of my words fall on silent ears. I spent years studying the relationship between fungal ecosystems and forests, especially where invasive non-native trees have taken hold.
The damage to the soil from invasive species is immense, I spent 13 months in Florida looking at an invasive tree species, my research indicated the reason I had become invasive was because it’s leaves deposited a chemical in the soil which inhibited the growth of the mycorrhizal fungi of the native species.
Biodiversity is the number one key to helping restore this planet, monoculture and trees for lumber are not the solution. A forest can take 40 years just to achieve carbon neutrality. Trees for lumber do not live long enough to fix carbon and so cause more damage than good.
Anyway that’s my rant over, as a fellow mycologist I hear you and will look into the RESTOR project. Everyone should look to see if their is something they can do either locally or by providing accurate information.
    Once again, great speech.

Till the time the health of nations is determined by Consumption/Production, i.e GDP, fundamental shift towards sustainable living will not be achieved.
Let's move to a different model which takes into account the physical and mental welfare of human beings, value of forests, clean rivers, bio diversity.

Interesting scientific approach. The science is quite clear. It is clear since the 1970s, so it is high time for our action (and in some areas in-action) if humanity and our fellow species want to stay on the surface of this beautiful planet long enough to change into a somewhat wiser species.

You'd be surprised by how many people wouldn't vote for a politician that wanted to implement a tree tax. Here in Aus we introduced a carbon tax, months later the next political party won on a promise to remove the carbon tax, which they did. That same party is still in power and refuses to implement a green energy plan for the county. They keep pushing coal and now Gas power stations. Apparently we need a mix of dirty and clean energy.. People think this is common sense, mean while our house burns....

reducing emissions is also a miscommunication. most people think reducing emissions is the silver bullet to fixing ecosystems but fixing the ecosystems requires revitalizing our relationship with nature: land use changes, industrial production changes, consumption pattern changes, spiritual changes
