    Lately I’ve been seeing tons of memes that are like “I am cringe but I am free” and I now see the connection to camp. Wow. I do feel better too!

    Thank you so much for this. I remember when that Met Gala theme was announced, I had zero clue, had no idea what was going on, and just didn't get why it was so buzzy... It's vaguely beginning to make sense, now. 💡

    I love this, I very much resonate with it. My historically-inspired hyperfemininity can sometimes come across at very conservative, and I really want to make a series of elaborated embroidered lace collars and ribbon cockades that say things like 'I'm not religious I'm just queer' or 'This is a performance'. I had a friend who once referred to me as 'leftist mary poppins meets soccer mum' which is absolutely not an incorrect assessment, and my aesthetic has just gotten more extreme from there

  • @heatherseal-breslin8223

    Honestly Sontag intimidates me as well, so thank you, thank you for reading her with us. Her essay on camp is so well-thought out, and it goes beyond the definition I had in my head of just outsized emotions and flamboyance. I am aware that I have minimal skills at decorating and a love of crochet in all its tacky glory, so I imagine that to someone with better taste, my home is most likely screaming camp in all-caps, but I enjoy, nay prefer, being true to my multi-colored Christmas lights and framed children's artwork lifestyle. And thus I am blissfully un-ironically camp.

    Loved this so much!!!! Now I wonder what the correlation between "Camp" and "Kitsch" is? I guess Gianni Versace would be Camp but not necessarily kitsch. But some kitsch can be camp... Thoughts anyone?

    • @heatherseal-breslin8223
      @heatherseal-breslin8223 Před 2 lety

      I feel as though "kitsch" is more low-culture, like a Barbie doll cake is both camp and kitsch, some unintentionally over the top theater costumes would be seen as camp, and a collection of porcelain kittens with big eyes would be just entirely kitsch. Yes? The Merriam-Webster definition actually backs me up here, of course I looked it up after writing the first sentence. something that appeals to popular or lowbrow taste and is often of poor quality
      2 : a tacky or lowbrow quality or condition
      teetering on the brink of kitsch

  • @thehomosexualhistoryoftheu4197

    Camp belongs entirely to homosexual men. When anyone else describes camp they are immediately anti camp, didactic, boring. Nothing Lady Gaga does is camp. It's a corporate sponsored impression of what her audience thinks is outrageous. It's stilted, and often pretentious.
    Camp between gay men needs no explanation. It's something known, and not by all homosexual men. But a lot. It's a language. Every time I've been around gay men in a group that is just gay men, camp emerges as a language.
    Camp in art is determined by homosexual men. We see it, point at it, declare.
    A book about camp, is not camp. Old VHS tapes with aerobic instructions, disco roller blading instructions, how to find a date instructions, that's camp.
    You're camp. But this was not camp. Don't let them steal your superpower. Just go sail boarding on lakes in your costumes. Homosexual men will know you, point at you and declare. CAMP!

      @@jacquelinedurban1461 Sometimes we homosexual men like to be polite and invite people into the camp. But it never works out. The heteros just take over and ruin everything. So it's more an intervention.
