    A great review for a great game. The criticism of the cost is warranted, however the reason things are the scale they are is that they are molded in 28mm miniature scale for use with other games. For example, the game does double duty for us since we also use the figures for Arkham Horror LCG. This is an edge case of course, but for those looking for well-made Cthulhu figures for other reasons will be well satisfied with this game for that reason. (even though the game itself is great fun)

    • @Shenaldrac
      @Shenaldrac Před 4 lety +26

      Still would be nice if there was a budget option that has thick cardboard standies or some other, far cheaper to manufacture stand in to reduce costs in place of the plastic miniatures. That way people who want to play and not break the bank can, and those who are willing to spend the extra for the plastic for its multiple uses and/or just want the cool minis.

    • @schylerheddings796
      @schylerheddings796 Před 4 lety +23

      I was staring at those figurines and doing math and thinking "Man, that's a really good deal for a lot of high-quality D&D miniatures if those are in the right scale."

    • @17blaziken
      @17blaziken Před 4 lety +7

      If you buy a game just for the miniatures, maybe you are not buying the game

    • @ulrik03
      @ulrik03 Před 4 lety +9

      Sandy Petersen wanted to create miniatures for Call of Cthulhu, and saw that the best selling miniature games on kickstarter were for board games. So he made one to bundle with his miniatures.
      This is half the reason there's no "budget" version, the other half is that the bucket of plastic version sells very well, and the company likely is better served by producing expansions than a "budget" version that would invariably eat into the sales of the main game.

    • @johna6108
      @johna6108 Před 4 lety +3

      Myeh. I love Cthulhu Wars but the miniatures arent particularly highly detailed or high quality. Also in 95% of my games the miniature size gets in the way of actually putting the miniatures on the areas.

    • @deciMae
      @deciMae Před 4 lety +8

      Two games combined, with different players playing different (but interlocked) games.
      The first group of players is playing a train company game (during wartime), where they move troops and supplies as multiple companies over railroads. The other group is playing a wargame, where they rely on the train companies for logistics. The armies change the routes, adds and removes destinations, and can set demand and supply. The companies help support the armies, and have information on where the other armies are located (as they are the ones which move them).
      Of course, any train company can support just one side of the conflict, but the most profit can be made by helping every side of the conflict. But anger one faction too much and your routes may be destroyed and you suddenly have little clientele. And any army can decide to just use one singular train company, but competition helps drive down prices, allowing for a much more effective army.

    Excellent review of a great game. I bought all the kickstarter 1-2 stuff as I love me some Cthulhu from a collection viewpoint, was happy that the game has been great fun. Price wise, yes its expensive ( and I am from Australia and on a pension ;P )but if you have the free cash and you love the theme and minis, I think it worth it. Keep up the great work peeps :)

    If you care about quality of your collection rather than quantity, buy it and don't look back. It's a blast to play.

      Yeah I agree. I get a lot of shit from other BGers for having CW in a total collection of no more than about 15 games. They're comparing this to their own bloated collections of 300+ games, of which they play perhaps 5 regularly. My top 15 are in constant circulation. I'd rather CW than a hundred of their mediocre games.

    I think many Monty Python sketches start at a point where other sketches would have ended for becoming too silly... and I love it!

    As a massive lovecraft fan who enjoys paints miniatures, it was horrific watching you dump a bag full of eldritch horrors out willy nilly like that.

    my personal recommendation for Cthulhu wars is if you are at all interested in miniature collection buy it for those because it's actually really cheap for the minis you are getting and then you get a really good game on top of it

    Great review of one of my favourite games. Because knowledge is power and power is doom: the designer Sandy Petersen designed also the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game way back and has made the Lovecraft lore in this game deep, truthfull and innovative with true passion. +Fun
