This is the all-new Toyota BZ4X!
It’s Toyota’s first purpose-built electric car, and Mat’s on hand to find out whether it has what it takes to compete with class leaders such as the VW ID.4, Audi Q4 e-tron & Kia EV6!
So let’s take a closer look. For starters, the BZ4X looks pretty stylish at first, with a sloping roof and full-length light bar at the back, through to some pretty smart chrome panelling at the front. However, on closer inspection, there’s quite a bit of plastic cladding across the car, including the rear bumper and around the wheel arches - not what you’d normally expect from a top-of-the-range model!
Thankfully, the interior is pretty impressive. The model we have here has a large infotainment screen up front, and the cabin generally has a bit of a futuristic feel to it.
You can get the BZ4X as either a front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Both models come with a 71kWh battery pack, while the largest claimed range you can achieve is in the front-wheel-drive edition, at 317 miles. In terms of power, the four-wheel-drive model has the upper hand, at 218hp.
The starting price of this all-new Toyota is £42,000. But do you think it could sway you away from other more established class leaders? You’ll have to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

Always love the reviews Matt does on this channel, but does anyone else ever think, what is the sound system in the car like? Would love a quick mention on whether the speakers are good or tinny etc.
And thestraightpipes (For cars that are also sold in Canada). Mat sometimes mention how the soundsystems are like. Though I must say that for cars that are in a lower price range, there's no real need for him to make any mention about the speakers because they are all pretty much Meh. They do the job, but there's not much expectations in the first place.
I'm the same. Sound is important to me which is why I can never spec a car with the standard sound systems (typically paper cones)

just the exterior of the cheap plastic makes a new EV model look cheap....Toyota blew it
This is just a bad car, Toyota spent years paying lobbyists against EVs (just to protect their high margins on hybrids) but they realized too late that they made a huge mistake and then yeah they made this forgettable electric SUV that is too expensive and too basic... If they don't wake up they will be crushed down by chinese manufacturers, MG is already bringing some very affordable EVs and it's only the beginning..
@@manu.yt25 lobbied? idk
forgettable design? perhaps

will it drive 400k+ miles? HECK YES!
so calm your horses
@@iwantedtosavetheworld7358 Yep Toyota has been of the company who lobbied the most against battery EVs in the past decade, because they were trying to protect their hybrid market, but they ended up making a big mistake that they are already paying today and who will probably threaten the group as a whole by 2030...
Good luck if you expect to drive that bZ4x for so long, it doesn't even have a good battery technology in term of longevity, for that you better check the EV Toyota is launching in China soon ("bZ sedan") where Toyota had to be a partner of BYD (one of the world battery and EV manufacturing leader) to get something "decent" on the market using LFP batteries who have a better longevity than regular Lithium-Cobalt and also it doesn't use the disliked Cobalt who has problems of bad press due to child labour in the congolese supply). The very fact Toyota had to knock to BYD's door to get something correct to launch on the Chinese market tells you how bad Toyota's current situation is. For sure the future will be BYD cars without a partnership to get the Toyota logo on them, Toyota will most likely get crushed by Chinese cars, they're leading in term of battery tech and cost. Sorry to say, but a handful of Toyota fanboys might not be enough to save them... 😅
For Toyota it was shocking to hear of a recall already because the wheels might fall off. Yikes.
Yep
It's just a Toyota
Oh what a feeling!
Toyota is worse than Chinese cars.
had a friend who paid for the car and was waiting for 6 months to get it for this reason. Unacceptable for a car at this price range, or any price to be honest

The back up BEEP was originally installed in the PRIUS. Its for people that are new to Hybrid or EV's that may not know they put the car in Reverse! Although, this is an item you can have your dealership change to ONE BEEP, just as you put it in reverse it will beep once and that's it.

Good review as usual. Rims, well Matt is still a "kid" and to them size and discomfort matters differently... 😉
And replacement tyres likely a lot cheaper as they are not bling / sporty
Especially the wheel tear off issue, love how they will recall 2700 units for this issue
If the tyres and wheels stay on the car that is! I believe Toyota are recalling the car and even buying them back from the customer as they do not have a fix for the problem yet.
Thanks for the review Matt. 41k GBP for a compact EV is still a challenge : )
Creep is great for keeping your foot over the brake instead of the torque go pedal when parking in tight spaces.
"I'm sure that is perfectly safe" Oh Matt, you crack me up. 😆
3:07 being able to change those settings quickly without taking your hands off the steering wheel is a good thing. The reason people typically don’t change those things while driving is *because* it’s in the touchscreen in other cars.
Also, fiddling with monitors while driving, like a cell phone or the infotainment system, is highly dangerous.
The important functions should always be available with an analog button.
Also because toyota does not have a global infotainment system. They use after market oem's im pretty sure
@@yagooatthegoat the infotainment system you see in the BZ4X is Toyota’s in-house developed system by their US technology arm. It’s showing up in any new or refreshed model since last year. Yes. Embarrassing given how long Toyota has been making cars.
Yep. There was a recent recall. That's why Doug DeMuro pulled his Bz4x review.
Overrated company
Just tighten the wheel nuts. Like jesus, people will grip onto anything to complain.
I can't help but feel that this car seems to translate the general attitude of Japanese companies that are slow and reluctant to adopt change, quite the opposite of the South Korean companies' attitude and mentality toward embracing change and be bold in the new approach. A far cry from Toyota from a decade ago. I will stick my lookout to Hyundai, KIA, and other European carmakers I think.
I live in Japan. You are totally right about it. Japanese companies are all like you said.
But they are still the largest auto maker in the world because there are still a lot of slow adopters as their customer. Toyota will still continue to be one of the largest company as long as there are slow adopters in this world.
@@eugp4198 Well pointed.
Indeed, Japanese companies are so conservative. Looks at Toshiba or Mitsubishi, good example of what happened to them. Toyota was one of the last adopting Android Auto/Apple P Car. But that's also a unique way of them, and there're many customers who will just love the way it is.
The difference in Toyota is their philosophy that sets them apart. It is not a matter of "can do" but if they "want to do"..
That was how their Lexus once dethroned the Germans and Audi still couldn't keep up in US till today.
Once they launched their GR Yaris and GR Corolla, it took the industry by storm, Hyundai "N" can't even come close.
Now it is getting more exciting when Toyota is committed in EV, they will for sure coming in with a big wave and setting them apart from the rest.
Hello, I have test driven the BZ4X twice so far. Everything is great about the car. But the consumption is very high and the battery runs out very quickly. As you have a good contact with Toyota Germany I would like to ask you to forward this feedback so that an update can be made to the cars and this problem has been fixed.
A glove box, a decent rear view mirror, and I would buy it :) They must have a huge stock of those VGA camera's at Toyota, because they still put them in new models it seems... so annoying. Japanese seems to live on another planet sometimes... but I like em 🙂

Great review Matt. Toyota's are bombproof, but they have soooo lost the styling & their satnav screen is so 80s. Common guys - get with it
With EVs, every car maker is “bombproof”. Toyota are about to lose their reliability advantage, which is probably why they are dragging their feet with EVs and still pushing ICEs.

Hyundai KIA EVs got notorious LG or chinese battery.

Bombproof? They’ve had to recall of these cars due to the risk of the wheels falling off.
It's nice. Looks very Lexus like and how many people are going to go and test those windows out. Toyota are late to the party but they tend to like to get it right first
My wife and I are family doctors in Austria 🇦🇹 we love it because it’s so well made … and we have a new defender as well. Works great!!!!!
Excellent video!
i think the reason the awd version doesn't gain much hp is because the rear motor is weaker. It's probably not a replacement for a mechanical awd system with torque vectoring and etc. and the added weight just eats in the mileage. If you don't have heavy snow, ground clearance is more important than awd.
Better off with FWD and a clever front diff than AWD - at least where I live and it never snows.
Ordered a two wheel drive today. I'll get it in May 2024. So exited!
are you insane...? There are about a thousand better cars out there you could have bought! This car is a disaster! DO SOME MORE RESEARCH!!
@@swanvictor887 yes I am insane...

This is a Toyota. Nobody buys it because of how fancy other cars are.
I'm assuming that they raised with only 10 HP the 4*4 version just to overcome the losses of the added mechanical parts of AWD, no need to exploit the battery further more.
Blimey! Matt gets all excited about being able to remotely start the air con - this has been a facility on BMW i3s for YEARS. And, no doubt, other EVs as well. Doh!
Another great review, was excited for the BZ4X when it was announced but not so much now, glad i went for the EV6.

Exactly, what's with all this superficiality, unless you're planning on racing on the highway. Why don't you tell me how much it's going to cost me on maintenace for 10+ years and whether it's going to last a long time to get your money's worth
Its because mat gets 600 hp rs6 for free as a daily so his standards are way unrealistic
Expecting it to be in ZEV states only in the US. It's a token effort they can show to keep the brand loyal from straying. Slow charging and a lower range so we can't get the Subaru twin to replace our Forester for long road trip explorations in out of the way areas.
Thanks for the review. Worth noting though that Toyota is late to the EV market because they previously tried to make Hydrogen work. I assume you know that of course but for anyone looking to buy one and worrying about this being their first electric car, I think the main unknown factor is the batteries as they've been working with electric motors for a while.
I actually prefer the way they've made the "gas" pedal slow down but keep going. I have a brake if I want to stop completely and I don't really mind using it.
Mat you and Yianni are my favourite car reviewers and drag racers ever and I love you both so much!
Great review! Makes me a little nervous for their new 4runner model. Toyota makes great vehicles but those goofy fenders Subaru has and now the Vz4 has…. Hopefully not
A lot of BZ4x was made by Subaru, so thankfully, unless Toyota follows that trend, the 4Runner is still up in the air, since Subaru has nothing to do with it.

Matt, the many buttons on the wheel and the design inside does not please me but the many buttons on the wheel could be because in some countries it’s not legal to operate the infotainment system while driving but the steering wheel is 👍
PNE-PEDAL DRIVING - You can do this by having the adaptive radar switched on while in crawling and stop-start traffic. It will brake at it's set threshold so it doesn't hit the car in front when stopped and all you do to move forward is give the throttle a touch. BUT in the CHR I hired recently, it's very grabby doing it that way.
Not gonna lie, that is a fantastic colour
Mat you never fails to entertain, amaze and excite us!
Great & entertaining review, if your thinking of a Electric car make sure you view real world charging speeds on reviews
I have one of these with the top trim level and I like it quite a bit. Bought it after my Porsche Cayenne Turbo S engine ate itself after explosively ejecting all 9 liters of oil. I think I may win the award for "most improvement", going from 12 mpg unleaded to whatever the equivalent measurement is for the Bz4x. Also, currently charging it with my solar panels, which is nifty.
So it’s better than Trubo S ? Is that’s what you trying to say
@@adnanhiary8950 They're not really comparable, so no, that's not what I'm saying. It is better than _my_ Turbo S, which now lives in a junkyard.
Personally... I think Matt needs an LTT water bottle to test out how cup holders work with either a normal (21oz) or big water bottle (40oz) since so many people have either those or other "Hydroflask-esque" bottles for their daily intake 👀👀👀👀
Idk if there are new designers at Toyota but their recent calars have been looking quite attractive
A car with a recall notice before it was released. Yes it’s good to have another TV to choose from but I wouldn’t even consider this one. Still hangovers like the bonnet has no pistons to keep it up but I suppose as it hasn’t got a front there’s no point having something like that. And surely those yoke steering wheels are death traps waiting to happen I’m sure I heard that somewhere.
I like that all the systems are in the driver's display rather than in center. That makes car much more usable of countries like ours which will be getting the JDM of the car. So those models don't have English language in any menu. And no option to change it either. So the obvious approach is to change the infotainment system. In which if the car controls are built into it the infotainment. We are very much in trouble.
But hate the cabin design with no glove box and no place to place your phone with the cable plugged in.
“Hi , matt Watson here from car wow” the only intro that matters 🤣

Is it correct that all the electric running gear including batteries have
been bought wholesale from the Chinese company BYD. I agree the sound system should be covered in depth as most drivers would use this more than sat nav.
Okay so the UK spec Bz4x is a lot different than the US spec ones because you do have the option of controlling those safety features in the infotainment in USA .
“What took so long?” Well, they sure didn’t spend enough time on painting all the body panels.
And a lot of money on lobbying against EVs 😄
Those plastic panels are there to make the impression that the car is rugged. Toyota took so long for their first EV because they did not believe in EVs until a couple of years ago.

Full electric cars are way less environmentally friendly than hybrids and hydrogen cars, because they take power from the grid. I think that's why it took them so long to build it, because Toyota were focusing on hybrids and hydrogen cars.

What happened to the "_we will wow you." thing?
That was cool.
Toyota BZ4X a good first generation for this vehicle = room for improvements ... Slainte' ! Cheers !
Finally! A video where the "Z" is properly pronounced. I've waited for so long 😭
Great car, if the wheels stay on of course!
Matt gets excited about an electric rear window 🤣 my Mazda 3 from 2004 does the same thing
Where's Mat? He's still playing with the 'lectric window, he's mesmerized by the up and down motion!
I like this a lot, some of the interior is a bit annoying but it's better than any vw group modern interior. The cladding looks good too it's different
If they'd priced it a bit lower it might have sold. At this price it's against far nicer cars like the ioniq 5 and model 3.
"nicer cars like the ioniq 5 and model 3". i woudn't really say that, the toyota looks miles ahead of all those models, it has an actual futuristic design instead of the cubey or sportsy design of the others, with a touch of quirkiness and at the same time soberness that makes it an actual nice car.
This car is impossible to find even if you wanted it, at least in the US. Toyota can't keep up with demand for most of their models, including this one.
Does it have the cvt gearbox? looks like theyve done a fair bit of cost cutting with this. No rear wiper is just plain ridiculous.
I recommend making a video about
