      Kane is world class, the captain and all the goals in the world career wise. Impact players, such as Gordon, Bowen, grealish, Watkins, toney etc (ik grealish isn’t in the squad) and maybe even palmer. They all offer a different type of football, different teams need tactical changes DURING the match, which is where these players come in if we are talking from an England perspective. Watkins goal was a Watkins classic, he was in the perfect moment at the perfect time from his signature strike. There’s no reason to drop Kane unless towards the latter stages of the game we need to change the areas of attack

    It would have been a 4-2-3-1, with Bellingham given license to go forward. Only problem with this is that Foden is going to playing on the left and you won't get the best out of him that way, Gareth knows this. If only Rashford had shown some of his form from the previous seasons! This would've been the perfect formation & team for that.
    So you have to think it'll be the same formation vs Holland (5-2-3) with the only difference Shaw in for Trippier. However, this formation exposes your wings and Spain have arguably the two best wingers of the tournament in their team. It will be interesting to see how the team sets up.

    I think one of the main reasons why they’re taking 23 outfield players to a tournament like this is so that a Manager can use most of them. The top players in the top teams these days are playing a lot more games in the season than say 20 years ago. Most are carrying a slight injury or just fatigued in these tourneys so as a Manager you have to know how to use most of the players. Playing the same players every game when you have fresh players on the bench raring to go ( like Ollie Watkins) just does not seem like great game to game management to me. As a player, I’d hate to go to a tournament just to be a cheerleader and not be given any chance to play at all.

Just about got away with it against the Dutch, who until the Watkins and Palmer substitutions had got on top of England with subs of their own, and looked the more likely side to score next.
      Southgate has got to make those subs (2 or 3) at around the hour mark, or the momentum might swing away decisively in Spain’s favour.

    • @really8930
      @really8930 Před 23 dny +2

      @@iron982 Hi. You sub Kane earlier because he was exhausted earlier much earlier than the time he was subbed.
      This is shown by his average positions in the first and second halves. In the first half he played relatively high up the pitch. In the second half, as he fatigued, he dropped deeper and deeper, and on average played about 20 metres further back in the second half than he had in the first half.
      This meant that when England got the ball in the second half before the subs, there was no striker up top, in a position to receive the ball from the midfield and run at the Dutch defence.
      Arguably, Southgate left subs too late in the 2 biggest games of his managerial life. Against Croatia in the 2018 WC semi-final and Italy in the last Euros final, England took the lead early on in both games and were the better side. But Southgate just stood there in the second half and made no subs, as Croatia and then Italy gradually wrested control from a tired England, and scored.
      Southgate must learn his lessons, and in the final against Spain help his players maintain or wrest momentum England’s way by making subs around minutes 60 to 70. It’s really not that complicated.

    Spain are favourites. England has nothing to lose. Their coach probably had seen England’s poor intensity in general play throughout the tournament and make a plan on how to overrun England midfield. Go for broke. Hit Spain’s weakness from the get go and surprise them with formation and personnel. Their players are not tall and physical.
    Surprise them with 4-4-2 and play England’s traditional strength of high and long ball with Toney as target man and Watkins to play off him. The only way to beat Spain’s midfield is to bypass them. Use high balls and long throws on dead ball.
    Two players to play each flank, one to nullify their winger and the other to cross to penalty box. Shaw (left back), Bowen (left wing). Walker (right back), Gordon (right wing). Wharton (tackling, good long ball) and Rice (height and physicality) to anchor midfield, while Lewis Dunk (height) and Guehi (to man mark elusive Morata).
    Like in Germany game, when Spain intensity down in second half, bring in Mainoo, Saka, Palmer, Bellingham to pace the game accordingly and exert some ball control. Foden to come in late if trying to level the score. Stones to come in if trying to game manage.
    I am dreaming 😅

      Spain will have 5 six footers so it's not too shabby, but height at right/left back is an issue.
      England aren't huge themselves though so that's not how it'll pan out.
      Spain are simply too strong and playing near maximum. That's the reality.

    • @Daniel_Goh
      @Daniel_Goh Před 21 dnem

      @@hmmm5082 Winning headers is not just about height and size. It’s about bravery and aggression in attacking it. Maguire is both size and height, but he does not leap nor does he attack the ball. Many times he wins headers because the ball goes towards him. That’s why his goal statistics from corners is not high. However, Toney and Dunk are good at attacking the high ball aggressively. Besides with Toney as target men, England can bypass Spain high press and keep their 2 midfield (of Rodri & Ruiz) running backwards. We have Pickford and Wharton who are good at forward long balls. Toney can either knock off the high balls behind their defence for a running Watkins, or hold the ball for England players to advance.
      Spain’s fullbacks (Cucurella & Carvajal) can deal with anyone we put on left and right wings and they can also go forward to attack like wingers. That’s why we need a 442 formation to keep their full backs on their defensive line. As such our crosses if unable to be done nearby byeline by wingers, it has to be crossed from less advanced positions (like Trent, Trippier, Wharton, Shaw).
      Their holding midfield Rodri is very good at holding the space between defence and midfield, so his club mate Foden and even Bellingham won’t find joy venturing into that area. Rodri is also good at professional fouls to stop transition too, so Bellingham also find it difficult to carry the ball forward with his dribbling runs. This is not a game for England to win in midfield battles. The way to rough Rodri up is if he has to run backwards all the time to help his defence.

Now they have extra rest against England who played very well in the 1st half but seemed tired and leggy in the 2nd. Holland seemed to be playing to go to ET and they got caught. Spain will control the midfield, the wings and their front line will overpower Englands back line. I think this is the ONLY real debate around the 'square pegs in round holes' issue. In the main players these days should be adaptable enough to cope, we are no longer in the 'is it Lampard or Gerrard' era... look at how other teams handle it. BUT, Foden and Bellingham have both been exceptional at times but also both gone missing, and that is because they are too similar, get in each other's way, and Foden has a role he doesn't seem to be abe to fulfil on the left in the way we require.
      Maybe it is written in the stars? For all the criticism of GS management and substitutions, he does seem to have got it about right when it matters.
      I think he will start them both for the final but I am far more confident now that he will change things earlier ... if it appears it isn't 'written in the stars' ... we'll see.
