  • As Indonesia prepares to invade the tiny nation of East Timor, five Australian based journalists go missing. Four weeks later, veteran foreign correspondent Roger East is lured to East Timor by the young and charismatic José Ramos-Horta to tell the story of his country and investigate the fate of the missing men. As East's determination to uncover the truth grows, the threat of invasion intensifies and an unlikely friendship develops between the last foreign correspondent in East Timor and the man who will become President. BALIBO is a political thriller that tells the true story of crimes that have been covered up for over thirty years.

It is a miracle that this movie was even made. In any case, East Timor got its independence from Indonesia in the end. I still can't explain how that happened. The Indonesian economy collapsed and the powers that be decided that, probably, it would be easier to extract oil from a weak East Timor than from a strong Indonesia. Another miracle. Contrast this with Dutch New Guinea. A similar case but a hopeless cause. The Portuguese stood up nonstop in every international fora for East Timor whereas the cowardly Netherlands never stood up for Dutch New Guinea, which was annexed with the permission of the US Government. Indonesia invaded East Timor with the permission of the United States, truth be told. Kissinger gave the go-ahead as a favour to the anti-Communist Indonesian military. The Australian government was very weasly. They supported the unsupportable by recognizing Indonesian occupation but then , when it looked like their hold was tenuous in 1998, changed tack and supported East Timorese self-determination. The whole episode of East Timor 1975-1998 is a shameful event in human history.

The film took some licence, intelligence reports stated that Roger East was dressed in jungle fatigues and had grenades on him when captured, sadly he was classed as a combatant although he may have intended to report from the interior. The man was incredibly brave and deserved not to die like this and have his body thrown into the sea. RIP Roger East

Just finished watching this movie. The Balibo Five & Roger East's murders by the Indonesian military has been through numerous royal commissions in Australia. Indonesia obviously has denied allegations of war crimes, and our government of the day (Whitlam) let the invasion of East Timor occur, and then 25 years later, supported the independence of East Timor (financially), which annoyed Indonesia, but we got trade out of it, so it was okay.

The 70s was at the height of Cold War. There's couple of events in the world that led to the invasion, such as the carnation revolution in Portugal, that ended with decolonization of Portuguese colonies all around the world, and in this case East Timor. The political turmoil of that event divided East Timor into a lot of faction, but most of whom can be pursed into pro-integration (joining indonesia) or be independent (take whatever necessary to achieve free East Timor) which mostly consist of Communist revolutionary and their allies. There's also another event that just recently happening in our lovely Southeast Asia, the fall of Saigon. The Soeharto's (our second president) regime was a hardcore anti-communism (see 1965-66 massacre) therefore in the wake of Vietnamese Communist victory in the Vietnam War, the west and her allies (Soeharto) would of course would do anything necessary to not let a Communist county on Indonesia's doorstep. And thus with that reason and without criticism from anyone at that time (i know crazy) the Indonesian military commence operation Lotus to invade East Timor and integrated it as one of our province.

There was no massacre in 1974. The only massacre happened toward East Timor was in 1991 in Dili (Santa Cruz shooting incident). Suharto was brutal dictator. Any people who opposed him were either politically estranged or killed.

There are some widespread myths regarding the relation between Indonesian guerrilla and Vietminh’s (Mao-style) guerrilla. For example, some Indonesians said that both countries’ way of conducting guerrilla warfare is the same. Others said that Vietnam defeated America because they learned guerrilla warfare from Indonesia, specifically one of the most prominent general in the Indonesian Army, Abdul Haris Nasution. Unfortunately, these claims are somewhat outlandish and ahistorical. It should be clearly noted that Mao’s and the consequently Vietminh’s style of guerrilla warfare is different from the one used in the Indonesia battlefield.
According to the Pokok-Pokok Gerilya (Fundamentals of Guerrilla Warfare) written by the infamous A. H. Nasution himself, Vietminh’s style of guerrilla was defined as an example of how a full-scale guerrilla should be: A small guerrilla warfare that in a certain time could turn into full-scale conventional warfare utilizing regimental or even divisional-sized units. This is particularly true if we take a look at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954. In this battle, both sides were engaged in a fully conventional, trench warfare using heavy artillery and such. Retrospectively, Nasution’s book was originally published in 1953, so it is fairly impossible for Vietminh to learn and implement the book in just one year. Military doctrines require years of time to become properly rooted in certain armed forces. And of course, this also means that Indonesian is the one that learned the lessons from Vietminh, where the hell did u get that kind of news?
