- There're no better reationships that have long remained amicable more than Japan and Taiwan, as people in the two nations share a strong affinity toward one another even to this day. But I was curious to investigate what are the reasons behind it.

I'd imagine having similar politics and world alignment makes it easier to "trickle down" into societies and cultures. Good to see good unity between Japan and Taiwan.
no its not. japan and taiwan belong to the soviet union and not nato. no more "culture" please.

I never knew that older Taiwanese hold a more positive view of when Japan ruled over them. But in the US, I was only taught about Japan in the mainland and WWII. I think most would assume that they did not like Japan because Japan conquered them.
US publicschool? Which state? My parents told me that if you aren't studying in certain east coast schools in america, you might as swell lump all other universities there as equal to a community college.
The Japanese Navy was in charge of Taiwan, they were relatively better than the Japanese Army which was in charge of Korea and China and Southeast Asia. This is what explains the relative difference in perceptions.
I've lived in Taiwan years ago & studied the language & history but only recently learned that thousands of Taiwanese served in the Japanese military in WW2, mostly in non-combat roles.
Taiwan was not occupied by the United States, Taiwanese can judge history fairly. After the war, when Korea was occupied by the United States(andUN), the United States demonized Japan :P
Japan WWII committed many atrocities in China, but is much smaller in scaled when it came to Taiwan.
Japan also invested and helped modernize Taiwan in so many ways that China never did . This includes establishing universities, bringing Japanese agriculture techniques and products, building the railway that is still used today, upholding higher standards of public health, and stuff. Quite a few older gen Taiwanese people were actually grateful to the Japanese for improving their lives.
I went to Taiwan for the first time after years of hearing nothing but good stuff about it from friends and it truly does feel like a parallel world version of Japan dubbed in Mandarin/Hokkien. From the High Speed Rail (their 'Shinkansen') to the cities, many spots feel like Japan in the 90s, while also having lots of unique stuff too like their night markets. The people were all super nice and the food was awesome - and insanely cheap! Definitely recommend Taiwan!
Taiwan's donation to the 2011 earthquake was the 2nd highest by country, just shy of the US. but the biggest difference was the U.S. donation was mostly funded by the government, while the Taiwanese donation was mostly funded through private donations. i guess it shows an enormous amount of goodwill towards the Japanese people.
Of course taiwanese people are grateful for Japan's covid-19 vaccine donations to taiwan and japanese politicians' support for taiwan on the international stage, despite political pressures from China.
i guess there is a bond built on helping each other in times of need. it also helps that taiwan is probably the weeb-est country out there 😀
I'm Indonesian , Before K-Drama make a massive widespread popularity in local televisions , In early 2000's , Mexican Telenovela and also Taiwan Drama used to be making a popular take over in local televisions station
Although we Taiwanese speak Chinese, we really don’t want to have anything to do with China. We hope to stay away from China.
The country that most makes us want to get close to is definitely Japan. I love Japanese food, novels, TV series...etc.
You have everything to do with China your ancestors come from the Chinese mainland and your culture is Chinese don't hate China and the Chinese people hate the government you can still be proud of chinese culture and civilization but not the government remember the only difference between china and taiwan is politics, chinese politicians who founded taiwan were still chinese
Then Don’t speak chinese if you have nothing to do..why don’t you speak Japanese

This is so interesting! In my youth, I spent a couple of years in Taiwan during college, to study Mandarin, but at that time, it was still under martial law and many aspects of the culture were tightly controlled. For example, the ROC government did not want the island to be taken over by Japanese culture, so they limited the amount of Japanese movies & TV shows, to encourage a more local, domestic Chinese culture to flourish. The ROC people, mostly mainlanders, naturally were also very distrustful of Japan, having fought (and lost) a terrible war against both them and the Communists. But the native Taiwanese had a certain nostalgia for the Japanese colonial era; among other things, they told me "there was no crime. If someone committed a crime, he was taken out and shot." The older people all could speak Japanese because they had to learn it in school between 1895 and 1945. Thus, when they saw a foreigner, they might speak Japanese, because that was the foreign language they knew. And of course, no one could visit mainland China at that time. I went into Guangdong from Hong Kong and brought back pictures, and friends in Taiwan were really interested to see them. Now I am dying to go back to Taiwan, with my family, and see how much things have changed. Democracy, relations with the mainland, food, culture, and just to see the people again! Thanks for this great report.
The "Chinese Culture" was not really local, it was forcibly imposed by the KMT. Hell, I remember getting beaten in school by the military officer assigned there by the KMT for speaking languages other than Mandarin Chinese.
@@ChuckLi-xh3sj Yes, it sounds like the KMT were pretty brutal during the martial law decades. Yet, they transitioned to democracy and freedom of speech, which is a pretty amazing achievement. The first real democratically elected government in China's history (apart from a brief period in Hong Kong before it was occupied by the Communists).
It’s so true that Taiwan kinda reminds me of Japan. I went back after so long but while walking through shops I thought that “Huh, this place kinda feel like it’s Japan” lol. I’ll finally be able to go to Japan this holiday, I can’t wait XD
I love the great relationship. Instead of hating the past. We should learn to love the present and appreciate each othets cultures. I will always love Taiwan for Xia long Bau and Japan for Sushi. Love both these countries. ❤❤❤❤❤️
It's great that the relationship between Taiwan and Japan is so good since they have similar culture and ways of living.
As a Singaporean Chinese I can tell you, among all the ethnic Chinese in the world, the Taiwanese are the best / friendliest / nicest Chinese in the world and by a mile
Yep
I'm guessing West Taiwan plays the "bad third party" role in this relationship, pushing both closer to each other.

While visiting historical sites in Taipei I got the sense that Japan did much more in giving Taiwan a culture than China ever did. They even seem to remember Japanese rule as better than Chiang Kai shek
facist white wash, ut is because the facist jap education system that brainwashed the people of taiwan during the ocupation
It was common knowledge that Japan was the better advanced modern country. Despite all the rebelling, many locals agreed because they actually wanted to send their child to a Japanese school. A lot of Taiwanese and Chinese travelled to Japan to attend university. You go there to study and get education, come back to Taiwan so you can make more money. Even Chiang Kai-shek got his education in Japan. Nobody travelled to China to study because obviously the state was in a civil war at that time.
@@pinkieanimation9691 it's because they are friendly. We're talking about modern society, if they are being ass like you nobody would like them.
This video must have taken a long time for you to make. Kudos to you!
Many people don't know how important and peculiar is the tight historical relationship between Japan and Taiwan so they tend to take it for granted as a normal relationship between geographically close countries which is not, it's a much more complex, unique and interesting relationship than that
I've been in Taiwan since 2018, Taiwan is mixed with Japanese and Chinese culture. They are nice people and friendly.
These are excellent viewpoints on both sides.
It just sounds the same for any Asian especially for a 90s kid Asian American... closest form of entertainment we would connect with would be Japanese Anime or Drama, and the Japanese snacks I always get growing up in the Asian markets. My grandparents always had Japanese anime/show while I was growing up, or it'll just be some random Asian show. In my teens, there was a Asian American network called MTV Chi that played a bunch of Mandopop/Kpop/Jpop or Jrock, that's where I could enjoy a lot of amazing Japanese artists, like Gackt, Bump of Chicken, Ayumi Hamasaki, Amuro Namie, Asian Kung-fu Generation, etc. and my favorite Drama of all times had to be My Boss My Hero which I probably rewatched over 10x. Honestly, Japanese was the popular form of entertainment until like 8th grade middle school is where I kind of shifted to Kpop/drama because of my gf but I never left my love for Jpop/Jrock. I kind of miss the songs I listened to back then and I can't even remember them all since youtube shifted to a weird search algorithm, so I'm not able to search for some content I wanted nostalgia. With that being said, I think I witness enough to tell how much Taiwan loves Japan, JRE (JAV event), locals fluency in Japanese, Japanese anime everywhere, Japanese companies and stores everywhere, just everywhere you get a mix of Japanese vibe going on while keeping their heritage as Taiwanese or Chinese... whatever not to be political, I'm talking about the Taiwanese culture as in how it blends with the aboriginals.
You've come very far Nobita. God Bless you, from the USA.
hello.very interesting to take up this topic. I stayed in Taipei for 3 days. Loved it more than I thought i would. And to my surprice i heard quite a bit of Nihongo. in Taiwan.Love to go back and visit both Taiwan and Japan.
It’s no surprise that Taiwan would share similar cultures with Japanese. After all Taiwanese live on an island too, so it’s expected to have plenty of delicious seafood. Taiwan is like a bridge connecting China with Japan.
This is one of the biggest differences between Asia and places like Europe and Latin America. Asian people feel like in order to befriend someone, their country has to have great relationships with the country of the other person. In Latin America, they befriend another person simply because the person seems friendly, regardless of their country. I guess it's because Asians feel so identified with their place, they are like military of their country. It's like they need to be involved in some kind of social structure in order to be able to do anything.
Also, Taiwanese people are friendly and warm only compared to Japanese people. They are not so open or friendly when compared to other countries.
Group identity is way more important in Eastern Asia. In those countries, a business card has the name of the company first, followed by the title, then the name at the end, which is the reverse of Western countries which put name first, then title, then company name. Also, Family name comes first, then given name, again the reverse of Western countries, because which family you belong to is more important.
台湾人の7割が日本に行ったことあるって本当なの?沖縄県民ですら島から出る人はもっと少ないような気がするけど、台湾人は結構海外行くんだね
I think it is true ,i am17 years old now,and I have been to Japan about ten times!
Taiwan is Japan's first and oldest colony, and probably the most loyal one. Compared to other colony at that time, Japan really put a lot of effort in constructing Taiwan, which made the life of Taiwanese people better.
True. Sad reality is that our colonizer did make our life more peaceful and happier than both Nationalists and Communists combined...
I wonder why the historical relationships between Japan and Taiwan vs Japan and Korea were so different. Like why did Japan treat Taiwan so differently?
Yeah I actually never thought about this, but I did notice Japanese seem to hate Koreans for some strange reasons
Japan helped industrialize taiwan as a model colony to demonstrate how they were civilized. As for korea japan actively oppressed and tried to destroy the culture and much more heavy handed. Also when the kmt took over they abused the local taiwanese more causing some to view the Japanese rule with nostalgia

starting to think perhaps my japanese studies haven't been a waste of time, especially after finding out how many taiwanese people know japanese
Not that many young people. English would be way more useful in Taiwan than Japanese
@@fangiscool1You’re wrong, there’re more young people know Japanese than their seniors. Many many Taiwanese people (especially in urban areas) took up Japanese to learn for fun (unlike English which they’re forced upon), contributing to a huge body of young people that are excellent in Japanese.
My Taiwanese mother always talked about how under the Japanese rule, Taiwan was so clean and organized. Then the KMT came and the Japanese left, and everything became chaotic and dirty. So this is also why!
Same with mainland, many improvements were made by Japanese except after the war the mainland lost democracy and embraced tyranny, destroyed many records and killed off remaining generations from Japanese rule.
Nobita, please don't move to Taiwan! Japan needs you!
No it doesn't lol
Nobita might at last get a girlfriend there
(1:20) I noticed Pokémon did not make the list. Is Pokémon less popular in Taiwan compared to other big animes?
No Pokémon is very huge in the 90s until 2010s. It’s just that people find it somewhat corny nowadays, and a lot of old people play Pokémon go, so it became slightly of a boomer thing.

This is a really big contrast than how China views Japan.
All the more reason to protect and recognize Taiwan as a country of it's own.
theres just as many weebs in china as taiwan
@@ohmygodlawl my point is, the difference is sentiment towards Japan. Chinese elderly hates Japan, and their government are also encouraging them for it.
Also just because there are a lot of weebs in China, doesn't mean a lot of them don't hate Japan.
Alas, Chinese communist party doesn't care, they have their plans, they are preparing to take Taiwan, be it by diplomatic ways or by brute force. If they can use censorship and hatred against anything that represents the freedom that Japan and Taiwan have, freedom they plan to supress, they will do it. Cultural elements such as fanfiction or fan art are also being targeted, as anything that opposes to them, be it weeb culture, or even mere drawings. An artist was arrested and they used and abused copyright laws against that person. That's 1984 level of censorship and control, they would control what people may or not be able to think if they could. We already saw what they did in Hong Kong, they are just waiting for their chance.

Hmm because France is far away. But Taiwan and Japan just neighbor countries
Its astounding that Taiwan bears no ill-will toward Japan as a former colonial power.
further proof that taiwan is hardly a real country... it still behaves like a colony of japan...
It’s also by comparison, the later “colony” was KMT (republic of China), and they employed a lot of heavy oppression and tortures that led eventually to a bounce back and bloomed our modern democracy.
Hopefully Taiwanese culture can be well preserved ,but not replacement of western/PRC Chinese influence

Edit: Now i see why people say they like taiwan.
Taiwan is both the Chinese culture, and a local southern Chinese culture. The PRC is just a horrible cancer in the middle of Asia.
We share close culture. Japan style culture makes our society more peaceful and happy compared to Western or China
Really insightful perspectives! would be curious to know more about comparing why Taiwanese are friendly with Japanese and why mainland Chinese aren't
I think it depends on when their experience with Japan started. My grandparents generation were occupied and resented their presence, seeing the soldiers walking around with guns. You’d be shot if you even looked at them the wrong way. My father (a child at the time) benefitted from the improvements to education and other infrastructure and had japanese friends, so his view of them differed. This generation is the current elder population, so their viewpoint is positive. The generation before was not so positive about Japan as they experienced the brutality of war.
As someone who's been to both countries. My advice for those who wants to go to Japan but can't afford it yet.. Go to Taiwan. You're gonna feel Japan vibes trust me.

Maybe if they actually have a somewhat similar culture they could let some people from Taiwan in to dampen the short term issues in the next few years because of the current low birthrate, if both parties would be comfortable with it and if it would make sense if they can't raise the birth rate enough the next years. But long term they could focus more on automating more and more stuff with robots / machines so they are less dependant on people to do the work as suggested in an earlier video. There are jobs that can't be done by machines but maybe they would be able to deal with the current situation on their own that way.
Or maybe there is a serious overpopulation problem in general. Population should go back down to the levels 100 years ago, about 56 million. Much better for the planet.

Most of them are hostesses, gyaru and a few actresses like Asuka Kirara.

This isn't only related to Taiwan but most of the countries that Japan had occupied in World War II, have an extremely strong love for Japan.
No they don't. Taiwan and a few polynesian islands are the exception. Korea, China, Philippines and many more do not love Japan's occupation era. Okinawa, which is currently part of Japan but used to be an independent country, also doesn't like Japan, they're basically the Tibet of Japan.

Quite the contrary. I don't expect a War in the Pacific any time soon. In fact, Xi Jinping is going to visit Biden in America this week to get back in our economic graces. He also wants chips-computer chips, to be exact.
I don't think it's correct to say Japan and Taiwan love each other... It's more like Japan not paying whole lot attention to Taiwan while Taiwan worshiping Japan, which I find kind of cringeworthy....Formerly colonized people/countries usually have somewhat ambivalent attitude toward their colonial masters, but Taiwan seems to be a unique case.. Taiwanese people actively supported the Imperial Japanese armed forces that killed millions of Chinese people (basically their brothers and sisters in the mainland), and astoundingly they are proud of it even to this day as to build a memorial for the effort... Could anybody explain why this is so?
Because over a million Japanese worked in Taiwan industries during the Japanese rule. They helped modernize Taiwan industries. Taiwan was acquired by legal means after the Treaty of Shimonoseki. It was not an illegal invasion. It was supported by countries like US and Britain. Modern eastern Asian culture has its source in Japan. Simply because it was the most advanced nation and the ones who had the opportunity to develop it firsthand. The reason why many Chinese supported the Japanese government was because the CCP, KMT and the Qing dynasty obliterated and destroyed everything that made China so great. The atrocities ended up being a lie written by the GHQ. The Taiwanese conveyed that accurately to future generations while the Chinese and Koreans twisted it.
@@thelastdefenderofcamelot5623 what's GHQ and what atrocities were lies?
@@thelastdefenderofcamelot5623 You wrote "Because over a million Japanese worked in Taiwan industries during the Japanese rule. After WWII they remained in Taiwan and changed to Han names"... Could you provide more detail on this, please?
@@tejave0ojnc I'm not here to do your homework. When Japan colonized Taiwan, it handled a large number of reclamation and immigration, and allocated land. At its peak, it contained a total of millions of people in other industries. If all the Japanese returns to Japan after its defeat and surrender, it will have nothing to live on the streets. Therefore, many Japanese immigrants have adopted Han names and continue to hold colonial land assets in Taiwan. Now they are all descendants of large landholders.
@@thelastdefenderofcamelot5623 If you cannot substantiate your claim then it's just gibberish.... All Japanese living in Korea and parts of China (more specifically Manchuria) during the colonial period left for Japan after WWII...why is Taiwan, which was returned to China after the war, any different? The fact that some Chinese people are so irrationally filled with self-hatred and worship Japan at the same time is pretty embarrassing...
They love to live in tiny house and tiny island.
