  • There're no better reationships that have long remained amicable more than Japan and Taiwan, as people in the two nations share a strong affinity toward one another even to this day. But I was curious to investigate what are the reasons behind it.

Japan WWII committed many atrocities in China, but is much smaller in scaled when it came to Taiwan.
Japan also invested and helped modernize Taiwan in so many ways that China never did . This includes establishing universities, bringing Japanese agriculture techniques and products, building the railway that is still used today, upholding higher standards of public health, and stuff. Quite a few older gen Taiwanese people were actually grateful to the Japanese for improving their lives.

I went to Taiwan for the first time after years of hearing nothing but good stuff about it from friends and it truly does feel like a parallel world version of Japan dubbed in Mandarin/Hokkien. From the High Speed Rail (their 'Shinkansen') to the cities, many spots feel like Japan in the 90s, while also having lots of unique stuff too like their night markets. The people were all super nice and the food was awesome - and insanely cheap! Definitely recommend Taiwan!

Taiwan's donation to the 2011 earthquake was the 2nd highest by country, just shy of the US. but the biggest difference was the U.S. donation was mostly funded by the government, while the Taiwanese donation was mostly funded through private donations. i guess it shows an enormous amount of goodwill towards the Japanese people.
Of course taiwanese people are grateful for Japan's covid-19 vaccine donations to taiwan and japanese politicians' support for taiwan on the international stage, despite political pressures from China.
i guess there is a bond built on helping each other in times of need. it also helps that taiwan is probably the weeb-est country out there 😀

This is so interesting! In my youth, I spent a couple of years in Taiwan during college, to study Mandarin, but at that time, it was still under martial law and many aspects of the culture were tightly controlled. For example, the ROC government did not want the island to be taken over by Japanese culture, so they limited the amount of Japanese movies & TV shows, to encourage a more local, domestic Chinese culture to flourish. The ROC people, mostly mainlanders, naturally were also very distrustful of Japan, having fought (and lost) a terrible war against both them and the Communists. But the native Taiwanese had a certain nostalgia for the Japanese colonial era; among other things, they told me "there was no crime. If someone committed a crime, he was taken out and shot." The older people all could speak Japanese because they had to learn it in school between 1895 and 1945. Thus, when they saw a foreigner, they might speak Japanese, because that was the foreign language they knew. And of course, no one could visit mainland China at that time. I went into Guangdong from Hong Kong and brought back pictures, and friends in Taiwan were really interested to see them. Now I am dying to go back to Taiwan, with my family, and see how much things have changed. Democracy, relations with the mainland, food, culture, and just to see the people again! Thanks for this great report.

@@ChuckLi-xh3sj Yes, it sounds like the KMT were pretty brutal during the martial law decades. Yet, they transitioned to democracy and freedom of speech, which is a pretty amazing achievement. It was common knowledge that Japan was the better advanced modern country. Despite all the rebelling, many locals agreed because they actually wanted to send their child to a Japanese school. A lot of Taiwanese and Chinese travelled to Japan to attend university. You go there to study and get education, come back to Taiwan so you can make more money. Even Chiang Kai-shek got his education in Japan. Nobody travelled to China to study because obviously the state was in a civil war at that time.

It just sounds the same for any Asian especially for a 90s kid Asian American... closest form of entertainment we would connect with would be Japanese Anime or Drama, and the Japanese snacks I always get growing up in the Asian markets. My grandparents always had Japanese anime/show while I was growing up, or it'll just be some random Asian show. In my teens, there was a Asian American network called MTV Chi that played a bunch of Mandopop/Kpop/Jpop or Jrock, that's where I could enjoy a lot of amazing Japanese artists, like Gackt, Bump of Chicken, Ayumi Hamasaki, Amuro Namie, Asian Kung-fu Generation, etc. and my favorite Drama of all times had to be My Boss My Hero which I probably rewatched over 10x. Honestly, Japanese was the popular form of entertainment until like 8th grade middle school is where I kind of shifted to Kpop/drama because of my gf but I never left my love for Jpop/Jrock. I kind of miss the songs I listened to back then and I can't even remember them all since youtube shifted to a weird search algorithm, so I'm not able to search for some content I wanted nostalgia. With that being said, I think I witness enough to tell how much Taiwan loves Japan, JRE (JAV event), locals fluency in Japanese, Japanese anime everywhere, Japanese companies and stores everywhere, just everywhere you get a mix of Japanese vibe going on while keeping their heritage as Taiwanese or Chinese... whatever not to be political, I'm talking about the Taiwanese culture as in how it blends with the aboriginals.

This is one of the biggest differences between Asia and places like Europe and Latin America. Asian people feel like in order to befriend someone, their country has to have great relationships with the country of the other person. In Latin America, they befriend another person simply because the person seems friendly, regardless of their country. I guess it's because Asians feel so identified with their place, they are like military of their country. It's like they need to be involved in some kind of social structure in order to be able to do anything.
Also, Taiwanese people are friendly and warm only compared to Japanese people. They are not so open or friendly when compared to other countries.

Group identity is way more important in Eastern Asia. In those countries, a business card has the name of the company first, followed by the title, then the name at the end, which is the reverse of Western countries which put name first, then title, then company name. Also, Family name comes first, then given name, again the reverse of Western countries, because which family you belong to is more important.

I didn't mean to exggerate however Japan beloved by everybody here and their bond with Taiwanese people are on another level, wish all country could learning something from them that loving neigbor country so much and show much love it's fine no one would protest on that thing.
Despite the big difference between them they have a strong bond to each other.
Taiwanese wanted to move to Japan:
That's valid of course, don't listen to those people rambling on the past that has nothing to do with the video, comment down below if you're in Japan now Tawanese citizens.
My thoughts on respectful languange in Japan:
Hats off to you Japan! Japanese people educated the soeity well concerning on respect, even they have various bows to show respect towards elders and the people who are inside of the vieccle, they bow as well we are on the same page on Japan sis Japan is the very best when it comes to respect. I think it depends on when their experience with Japan started. My grandparents generation were occupied and resented their presence, seeing the soldiers walking around with guns. You’d be shot if you even looked at them the wrong way. My father (a child at the time) benefitted from the improvements to education and other infrastructure and had japanese friends, so his view of them differed. This generation is the current elder population, so their viewpoint is positive. The generation before was not so positive about Japan as they experienced the brutality of war.

Maybe if they actually have a somewhat similar culture they could let some people from Taiwan in to dampen the short term issues in the next few years because of the current low birthrate, if both parties would be comfortable with it and if it would make sense if they can't raise the birth rate enough the next years. But long term they could focus more on automating more and more stuff with robots / machines so they are less dependant on people to do the work as suggested in an earlier video. There are jobs that can't be done by machines but maybe they would be able to deal with the current situation on their own that way.

I don't think it's correct to say Japan and Taiwan love each other... It's more like Japan not paying whole lot attention to Taiwan while Taiwan worshiping Japan, which I find kind of cringeworthy....Formerly colonized people/countries usually have somewhat ambivalent attitude toward their colonial masters, but Taiwan seems to be a unique case.. Taiwanese people actively supported the Imperial Japanese armed forces that killed millions of Chinese people (basically their brothers and sisters in the mainland), and astoundingly they are proud of it even to this day as to build a memorial for the effort... Could anybody explain why this is so?

    • @thelastdefenderofcamelot5623
      @thelastdefenderofcamelot5623 Před 6 měsíci +7

Because over a million Japanese worked in Taiwan industries during the Japanese rule. They helped modernize Taiwan industries. Taiwan was acquired by legal means after the Treaty of Shimonoseki. It was not an illegal invasion. It was supported by countries like US and Britain. Modern eastern Asian culture has its source in Japan. Simply because it was the most advanced nation and the ones who had the opportunity to develop it firsthand. The reason why many Chinese supported the Japanese government was because the CCP, KMT and the Qing dynasty obliterated and destroyed everything that made China so great. The atrocities ended up being a lie written by the GHQ. The Taiwanese conveyed that accurately to future generations while the Chinese and Koreans twisted it.
