  • Welcome to my book review of Red Rising by Pierce Brown, a journey set on a future Mars, where society is divided into a color-coded caste system.
Darrow, a Red, toils under the belief that his efforts will make Mars a livable place for future generations. However, his world is shattered when he learns that Mars has been habitable for centuries and that the Reds have been misled and oppressed by the Golds, the elite ruling class. This revelation propels Darrow on a path of transformation and rebellion, aiming to dismantle the hierarchy that subjugates his people.
Red Rising is not just a story of rebellion; it's about survival, strategy, and the complexities of revolution. The book combines science fiction, dystopia, and a narrative of growth, creating a blend that captivates readers. An interesting aspect of the book is its inspiration from historical and mythological sources, adding depth to the narrative and its characters.
Throughout this review, I'll look into the world created by Pierce Brown, the detailed society he's crafted, and the themes of power, inequality, and the quest for freedom that echo through the story. Join me as I explore the societal structure of Mars, Darrow's character development, and the book's contribution to the genres of science fiction and dystopian literature.

I loved Darrows confidence in himself and his abilities. Makes the moments where he is humbled a bit more impactful.

Great review. This one has been on my ‘to read’ shelf for a wee while so it’s good to hear your perspective.

Oh that's good to hear. Are you planning on reading it in the near future or have you got a bit to get through on your TBR list before you get to the Red Rising series? Thanks for the comment mate.

@@PaperbackJourneys I dunno, I’m reading Bleak House at the moment which is pretty dense with characters too so I might need something a little less complex and with a smaller cast as a palette cleanser first. Might have to reread The Old Man And The Sea. I mean that’s just a dude and a big fish, I should be able to keep track of those two characters.

Seconding the great review! You have a great way of explaining everything, so easily digestible and entertaining! Still hoping you may read the "Necroscope series" by Brian Lumley in some near future?? HAHA no pressure! Book 3: The Source is where it REALLY gets interesting!! I can't seem to find anything remotely like his series and its spin-offs. Sorry for going on about it, it's just that no one seems to know about or talk about it here on CZcams much! Reading the book cover synopses does not give the story justice, it's so much deeper and richer than even I imagined it! Plus, the rights were bought for possible movie/tv series recently, so an introduction to Harry Keogh, the Necroscope, would be amazing! To continued success! cheers

I will definitely get around to reading it. It's on my wishlist BUT the problem with that list is that it keeps growing and growing haha. There's too many good books.

Great review as always! I haven’t read Red Rising but I might just pick it up!
And I’ll probably not take the audio book then, but for me, it’s rare that I read audiobooks. I just stick to the paperbacks. If I pick it up, it’ll probably be the first book I read after I’m done with Under The Dome.

I've been unsure of whether I want to give this series a chance, so this was a helpful review to listen to.

I disagree with the idea of darrow always being the best. Severl time darrow compares himself to others and points out several times that they are better than him in certain aspects.
The thing darrow has is a great ability to think outside the box and able to read others. As for physically there are obvious reasons why hes capable of doing what he does, but he does fail, several times in fact. Not to mention theyre about 16 to 18 years of age, who isnt a bit full of them selves at that age?

@@PaperbackJourneys absolutely. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed the first one but Golden Son brings it to a whole other level. No spoilers but I have no doubt that when you turn the final page you will be reaching for Morning Star with sweaty, shaking hands lol 👍🏻
