everytime i try it says only lines and arcs can be used to create bent lofted bends

I suffered the same problem and found that you have to do two things:
1. make separate sketch or 3d sketch for each spline
2. choose the second option in the lofted bend dialog (i think it is equivalent to "maximum deviation" button, but here we see it works with the first option also, i have another version of solidworks and also in russian translation, so i can not tell for sure)
