  • In episode 2, we explore the work of St Columba, the great missionary and trainer of missionaries. St Columba was originally from Ireland and worked there for many years; he was credited with raising over 300 churches. He continued this work overseas and set sail to Iona, Scotland in the year 563 with 200 of his companions. St Columba set up a school on this small barren and windswept island that had a great impact and become a central training point of the Celtic Church for several centuries.

Wow! Great video, again! This channel has become a new favorite - THANK YOU! When this particular story started, my thoughts made a small edit to take out the definite article in "the known world" so instead to say something like "These two countries on the brink of a known world". My thoughts went quickly to the rest of the world outside of Columba's story of Iona. So fascinating to contextualize the history here of Iona with a 500 AD world of Polynesians settling into Oceania's Hawaii and the Bantu settling into the south of Africa as well as the heavily populated regions of Amazonian great rivers and plains of South America at that time. History is so rich especially when inclusive of more of the world. Would love to know your thoughts and sending love as one of your new subscribers! Much love to the whole team. Truly awesome.

Iona was most certainly a monastery - an Orthodox one - and to deny that is to rob Saint Columba of his legacy and to deny history. He even wrote a monastic rule. Saint Columba (the Latinized name for Colum, meaning dove) was born at Garten in Donegall to a noble family. He entered the monastic school of Moville under Saint Finnian, who had studied at Saint Ninnian’s great monastery. Here Columba received the diaconate and entered monastic life. Tradition tells us that it is there that his sanctity is first attested to by the performance of miracles. Having completed his training he travelled to Leinster and then later to the monastery of Clonard. Here he was probably ordained priest before leaving for Glansnevin and the monastery there. When a pestilence devastated the country in 543, the monks dispersed and Columba spent 15 years traversing in Ireland founding several important monasteries, including Derry in 546. When the great schism occured in 1054AD, Rome began to aggressively push out those communities which held to the Orthodox faith.

Celtic Christians also kept Passover on the 14th of Aviv, but I see Adventist don't do that at all. Yet keep the date decided by the council of Nicea that was presided over by Constantine. But Passover isn't one day. It's the entire week of Unleavened Bread, which is kicked off with the Passover meal. Meanwhile, easter is one day and full of leaven.

This is very well made. But at 2:35 you state that St Columba was not a monk? If I hear you correctly, this is untrue. Columba was a monk who founded several monasteries. Including the first monastry at Iona. Your video comes at the top of most searches for Columba and Iona so I thought that was worth highlighting for others. If there is anything one needs to know about Iona it is that monks lived there. God bless.

Keeping the Sabbath? Does that mean the 7th day (Saturday)? What is the evidence for this?

    • @ChristSeed777
      @ChristSeed777 Před 4 lety +1

      The Sabbath
      Genesis 2:1-3
1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
The Sabbath commandment was with Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. It wasn't just a Hebrew thing.
Mark 2:27 KJV - And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
This is the only commandment that starts with REMEMBER. Remeber means to bear in mind......
      Exodus 20:8-11
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. (See also Deuteronomy 5:12-14)
Hallowed means consecrated to a sacred use, reverenced.
      Exodus 31:12-17
12 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a SIGN between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.
14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.
16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.
17 It is a SIGN between me and the children of Israel FOR EVER: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.
We see with these verses how important the Sabbath was to our God. Points of intrest:
      1. It is a sign between Him and His people. It is to show who is His, see Exodus 8:23
      2. If you defile it you will die and He will cut you off from His people. (Numbers 15:32-36)(Exodus 35:2)
      3. It is a "perpetual" covenant, perpetual means Never ceasing; continuing forever in future time; destined to be eternal
*It was only ever meant for our good and for us to get to know our Creator*
It was SO IMPORTANT that even Christ Jesus our Lord rested on the Sabbth after he was crucified for OUR sins.
      Matthew 28, Mark 16
He said he would bless us if we kept it:
      Isaiah 56:2-7
2 Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil.
3 Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree.
      4 For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant;
5 Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.
      6 Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant;
7 Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.
      Isaiah 58:13,14
13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:
14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
The Sabbath will even be kept in the new heaven and new earth:
      Isaiah 66:22-24
22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.
23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.
24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.
Even at the time of the end the sabbath will still be observed:
      Matthew 24:20,21
20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
We should all know that Christ kept the Sabbath, hopefully we know that he did, but after he ascended to heaven his apostles still kept it:
Acts 13:14 KJV - But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down. (Paul and company)
Acts 13:42 KJV - And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.
Acts 13:44 KJV - And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.
Acts 17:2 KJV - And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,
Acts 18:4 KJV - And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.
So how did this change come about and who did it?
The change of the Sabbath and God's appointed feast days were prophesied:
Daniel 7:25 KJV - And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.
×The Roman Catholic Church was the one who changed it.×
The day of the Resurrection: the new creation
      www.vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p3s2c1a3.htm
2174 Jesus rose from the dead "on the first day of the week."104 Because it is the "first day," the day of Christ's Resurrection recalls the first creation. Because it is the "eighth day" following the sabbath,105 it symbolizes the new creation ushered in by Christ's Resurrection. For Christians it has become the first of all days, the first of all feasts, the Lord's Day (he kuriake hemera, dies dominica) Sunday:
We all gather on the day of the sun, for it is the first day [after the Jewish sabbath, but also the first day] when God, separating matter from darkness, made the world; and on this same day Jesus Christ our Savior rose from the dead.106
Sunday - fulfillment of the sabbath
2175 Sunday is expressly distinguished from the sabbath which it follows chronologically every week; for Christians its ceremonial observance replaces that of the sabbath. In Christ's Passover, Sunday fulfills the spiritual truth of the Jewish sabbath and announces man's eternal rest in God. For worship under the Law prepared for the mystery of Christ, and what was done there prefigured some aspects of Christ:107
Those who lived according to the old order of things have come to a new hope, no longer keeping the sabbath, but the Lord's Day, in which our life is blessed by him and by his death.108
That should answer it. They changed it not by command from God but of man.

@@tarquinmidwinter2056 Sorry about that, I just did a quick search and found this:
      Columba's Early Life
Columba was fostered and tutored in his early years by a priest named Cruithnechan -- just a few miles from his birthplace at a location now called Temple Douglas. He later went to three or four other schools for his higher education, ending up with one of the greatest teachers of the time.
Columba studied under the distinguished Finian of Clonard and, in 551, was ordained a priest of the CELTIC CHURCH. As a member of the Celtic church, which was founded DIRECTLY upon the teachings of the apostles of the Messiah who reached Britain shortly after the death of the Messiah, Columba observed the CORRECT PASSOVER and apparently kept YEHOVAH God's true SABBATH day. Peter Berresford Ellis writes that "Rome looked to Peter as its founder while the Celtic Church cited the authority of John. The Celtic Sabbath...had more in common with the Greek service than the Latin" (Celtic Inheritance. Dorset Press, N.Y. 1992).
They began the Sabbath at sunset each Preparation Day (sixth day of the week) and, according to Leslie Hardinge, "The Sabbath was held to be a day of blessing in Wales as well as in Ireland and other Celtic lands" (The Celtic Church in Britain, p. 82).
The Passover was observed on the 14th day of the first month (Nisan) and the British historian Bede records that some Christians in Scotland continued this practice well into the seventh century. Not only that, but the FOOT-WASHING CEREMONY instituted by the Messiah in John 13 was also carried out.
Some sources even indicate that the Celtic Church observed PENTECOST and perhaps some of the other holydays of YEHOVAH God!

*The Coli Dei - Celtic Church Culdees*
The Coli Dei were groups of monks known as Culdees.
The groups of companions called by this name seem, moreover, to have played a much larger role in Scotland than in Ireland.. these autonomous groups of hermit brothers correspond to what we know of the original structure of the Celtic Church..
These Coli Dei [Culdees] had a role to play on the Celtic side analogous to the role attributed on the eastern side.. to the canons of the Holy Sepulchre, the spiritual descendants of the Essenes. The appeal to a distant Celto-Scottish filiation parallels the appeal made to affilitation with the builders of the Temple of Solomon and the community of Jerusalem.
“The Coli Dei are also included in the spiritual line of descent from the builders of the Temple of Solomon, the line of the Essenes.
They were Pythagorean Druidical monks, probably Essenes, and this accounts for their easily embracing Christianity: for the Essenes were as nearly Christians as possible.”
They were established at York in England, at Iona in Scotland, in Wales, and in Ireland; their favourite symbol was the dove, the feminine symbol of the Holy Spirit.
Could it be that this sacred Presence noted on Iona has to do with the possible presence of Christ Himself on Iona? The Scottish literary writer, William Sharp, in his essay Iona (1900) refers to “the old prophecy that Christ shall come again upon Iona.”
This presupposes that Christ had already visited Iona according to an ancient oral tradition.
Curiously, just 80 miles due north of Iona is to be found another small Hebridean island, located in Dunvegan Bay, off the west coast of the Scottish Isle of Skye. It is called Eilean Isa (currently spelt Isay) which translates from the gaelic as the “Island of Jesus”. Isa is the Middle Eastern arabic name for Jesus, whereas His name in gaelic is Iosa.
The “Island of Jesus” was so named as a result of it being sanctified by the presence of Jesus (Isa) Himself.
In the early centuries A. D. a placename was often given to record the actual presence and sanctification of a specific place by the early Celtic Christian monastic saints. Could this explain the appellation of the “Island of Jesus” to record the actual presence of Jesus on this particular Island.
1895, Henry Jenner, a former keeper of the manuscripts department at the British Museum in London, came across an intriguing oral tradition. In an article published in The Western Morning News in 1933, Jenner wrote:
“I was staying on South Uist, in the Catholic part of the outer Hebrides, and found there a whole set of legends of the wanderings of the Holy Mother and Son in those Islands.” Taking the foregoing associative elements into account the idea that Jesus (Isa) might actually have visited Iona may not be as far fetched as would at first appears.
Enlarging upon the Iona prophecy as related by William Sharp (Fiona Macleod) in his essay on Iona, this author relates:
“When I think of Iona I think often, too, of a prophecy once connected with Iona…. the old prophecy that Christ shall come again upon Iona, and of that later and obscure prophecy which foretells, now as the Bride of Christ, now as the Daughter of God, now as the Divine Spirit embodied through mortal birth in a Woman, as once through mortal birth in a man, the coming of a new Presence and Power: and dream that this may be upon Iona, so that the little Gaelic island may become as the little Syrian Bethlehem…. the Shepherdess shall call us home.
A young Hebridean priest once told me how, ‘as our forefathers and elders believed and still believe, that Holy Spirit shall come again which once was mortally born among us as the Son of God, but, then, shall be the Daughter of God.
The Divine Spirit shall come again as a Woman. Then for the first time the world will know peace’.”
Interestingly, in the Hebridean mythos Christ is called “the Shepherd of the flocks”, while St. Bride is referred to as “The Shepherdess of the flocks”.

      *Iona the Island of Druids*
William Sharp continues: “Nor must I forget that my old nurse, Barabal, used to sing a strange oran, to the effect that when St. Bride came again to Iona it would be to bind the hair and to wash the feet of the Bride of Christ…. Legend itself is more ancient here than elsewhere.
“Bride, who is the soul of the ancient Mysteries - She is the Virgin-Sophia, the Virgin of Light whom the Bards once met among the stars. Companion of Christ, she came down to Earth with Him….”
Moreover, Alice O. Howell in The Dove in the Stone (1988) says:
“There in the Gaelic tongue the prayers and songs rose and fell, with a Christian overlay, to the unflagging devotion to Sophia, first called Brith (or Brid), then St. Brigid, the Mary of the Gael….
What Sophia offers is a view of the earth beyond the ego’s arrogance, an empirical experience, at long last, of the Holy all about us. It is akin to what a dedicated gardener may sense. It sheds light on Mary Magdalen, who, of all the women around Jesus, was first to see the risen Christ, thinking he was ‘the gardener’ in the garden….
The saying of St. Bride rings through the centuries as a cosmic utterance: ‘My mantle shall be laid on the Lord of the World’; for the Lord of the World is, in reality, the Christ, suffering in the darkness of human ignorance, on the Earth. And the real fulfilment of the words of Bride is to be found in the saying of St. Paul: ‘Not I, but Christ in me.’ This foreshadows the marriage of the Rose and the Lily.”
Mingled with the fragments of an ancient Druid culture and wisdom there is the childlike purity and ecstasy of a Christianity quite unlike that which is to be found later.
It is enclosed like a delicate seed within the old and dying splendour of the Great Mystery Centres of Ireland; it is a Christianity that, in its pristine purity is no longer to be found on the surface of civilisation. It is still hidden in the hearts of a few, and in solitary places.
There is some reason to believe that at an early date these Druid priests converted to the Christian faith forming a monastic order of the early Celtic Church known as the Culdees, which derives from the gaelic Culdich (“certain strangers”) and the Latin Coli Dei meaning servants of the Lord or God.
The 19th century antiquary, Godfrey Higgins, notes: “In the early history of the Christian church, in Britain and Ireland, we meet with an order of priests called Culdees…. They had a very celebrated monastery in the island of Iona, and others in remote situations, and these situations, by accident or design, mostly the former possessions of the Druids…. The result of all the enquiries which I have made into the history of the Culdees is, that they were the last remains of the Druids, who had been converted to Christianity, before the Roman church got any footing in Britain.
It would surprise many to learn that Winston Churchill was supposed to be a Druid!

*King Arthur, Merlin & St Columba*
Without doubt Scotland's best loved Saint was a warrior and a priest of the two religions of the time. He was a bard and a prophet, a kingmaker and a wizard, but was he Merlin? He certainly fulfils the Arthurian wizard's characteristics in a life contemporary with the historic Artur MacAeden.
One last thought ~ Columba took his name from the Latin Columbia Livia (The Dove) however the Latin for the Merlin is Falco Columbarius.
      Falco-Columbarius Definition:
A taxonomic species within the genus Falco/Falcon - the Merlin
In true bardic manner Columba played a harp, had a wonderful voice and wrote poetry. He operated in the land were Artur MacAeden's father was king, he influenced the land, the people and the spirit of where Clan Arthur was born and grew. In 597AD Columba died at peace on his beloved Iona.
Around 576AD Columba attended a meeting of Kings at the Summit of Druimcett in Ireland. There are two reasons given as to why Columba was present; to negotiate autonomy for the Dalraiadic Kingdom in Argyll, or to represent the Bardic Order and argue for the maintenance of the Bardic Schools and the preservation of the old ways of life and religion.
Columba maintained a practice of blessing pagan wells and many throughout the West of Scotland still bear his name to this day. The Saint also forbade the felling of oak at a time when the Christians were cutting down the Druidic oak groves. Interestingly, one of Columba’s Irish foundations was at Derry, meaning Oak from the Gaelic Doire.
Columba's first mission in Scotland appears to have been as political emissary for Conall when he journeyed north to Inverness where he defeated King Bruide’s druid in a contest of wizardly skills and won the King's attention.
Columba anointed Aeden King of Scots, he could have anointed his son Artur, King of the Britons ~ Aeden's mother was the daughter of the British Brychain and Artur's mother is thought to have shared similar genes.
The following year, as the result of a prophetic dream he had on the Isle of Iona, Columba chose Aeden MacGabhran over his brother for the throne of Dalriada. This was a remarkable event ~ the first time in North British history that the Church had intervened in the monarchy. This role had been traditionally held by the Druids and now Columba's prowess came to the fore as he effectively adopted the position. Selecting kings was certainly a function of the Pictish Druids of the period. The genealogical role of the Druids was latterly taken over by the Lord Lyon’s Court.
Adomnan also wrote the Law of The Innocents, laying the foundation for the modern day Geneva Convention, which forbade women, children and clergy from becoming involved in conflict. Which proves that during Columba's lifetime women, children and clergy were involved in conflict.
Adomnan says that hardly a day went by that there was not a merchant ship at anchor in the bay off Iona

*The Red Dragon of Wales & the White Dragon of the Saxons*
The Red Dragon signifies our people of Britain. For a long time he shall suffer woe and be driven into hiding by the White Dragon, who signifies the Saxons whom you have invited into the Island. For a little space the Red Dragon shall conquer, when King Arthur rules this land: but when he passes into Avalon, the White Dragon shall triumph wholely, and the Saxons shall rule all of Britain. Yet at the last age Arthur shall return, and the Red Dragon of Wales will conquer the White Dragon and set his country Free.
The boy Merlin said that the Red Dragon symbolized the people of Vortigern and the White Dragon symbolized the Saxons. Which symbolizes that in the future the people of Vortigern, who are today called the Welsh, would fight the Saxons and drive them to the edge of their country and out of their land.
Wales is symbolised by a Red Dragon. In the Mabinogion the tale of Lludd and Llewelys speaks of the struggle between this Red Dragon and the White Dragon. It was long ago in the days of the Saxon invasions of Britain that this story takes place and it is no wonder that the White Dragon as the invader, the Saxons, come to battle the Red Dragon.
The pool is the emblem of this world, and the tent that of your Kingdom: the two serpents are two Dragons; the Red serpent is your Dragon, but the White serpent is the Dragon of the Saxon people who occupy several provinces and districts of Britain, even almost from sea to sea: at length however, our people shall Rise and drive away the Saxon Ethnic race beyond the sea, whence from they originally came.
The 'Historia Brittonum,' of about 800 A.D. (traditionally ascribed to the Scholar Nennius), which drew from earlier sources, described a Red Dragon as the symbol of the British Celts in their Wars against the White Dragon of the Saxons.
The Celtic Dragon represents Sovereignty, Power or a Chief, such as Pendragon, the Celtic word meaning 'Chief'. The Red Dragon of Cadwallader, the emblem of Wales: 'Upon a Mount vert, a Dragon passant, Wings expanded and endorsed gules - the Red Dragon is Dreadful'.
The Saxons had the White Dragon as a Royal Standard. In early Britain it depicted Supreme Power.
The current flag of England is the flag of Saint George, the 'Dragon Slayer'. The flag consists of a Red Cross on a white background and was first worn by the English King Richard 'The Lionheart'.
Plantagenet and his English Knights embarked on the Third Crusade in the 12th century. When the Crusaders returned back to England, they replaced England's first flag, which was the Anglo Saxon 'White Dragon' flag with the Saint George. The White Dragon flag consisted of a White Dragon on a Blood Red background. Even though the Saint George flag is the official flag of England, the 'White Dragon Flag' is still in use and is still very popular amongst the English who some of which would like to have it re-instated as the official flag of England.
In their subsequent contests with the Saxons, our British ancestors always had a Red Dragon painted upon their standards; while the colourless banner of their Saxon opponents bore the figure of the White Dragon"
Attention must still be diverted to the victorious Germanic Saxon race and the conquered Indigenous Celtic race, one must view the White standard of the Saxons and Angles gradually driving the Red standard of the Kymri Celts back towards the West ...the national poems of the Cambrians designated the two hostile standards, the Red Dragon and the White Dragon.
These two Warring forces grew the legends of Merlin and King Arthur. Eventually a line was drawn by the Saxon King Offa of Mercia who built a Dyke separating what was then Celtic Wales guarded by their Red Dragon, from Saxon England and their White Dragon. The last time the White Dragon was seen as a national Standard in Britain was at the Battle of Hastings where on the Bayeux Tapestry the White Dragon is seen in the scene in which King Harold is struck down.
The Red Dragon as the symbol of Authority, Sovereignty & Cheif Rule only in the extreme West (Britain, Wales) and in the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire. The Red Dragon survived as a Welsh symbol of the Byzantine Empire until Constantinople fell to the Turks in 1465.
Taking advantage of the newly weakened state of Britain these shores came under increasing threat of invasion by the Saxons from Denmark.
The Saxons had because of their contact with Roman Forces acquired the Dragon as a symbol of their own. They however had preferred a White Dragon. The next six hundred years saw battles and rivalry between the forces of the Celts with their Red Dragons and the Saxons with their White Dragons.
In later years during the War of the Roses, the Lancastrians were identified as being the Saxon half of the opposing armies and so on medieaval manuscripts were represented by the White Dragon. In modern times the Arch Bishop of Canterbury wears a jeweled clasp on his enthronement vestments. The design on the clasp bears the image of a White Dragon, representing the people of England and a Red Dragon representing the people of Wales greeting each other in peace across the Cross of Canterbury.

*The Saxon English Ethnic Tensions currently being Tested*
Moves are now under way to once again raise the White Dragon flag, not as the flag of England, but as the flag of the Saxon English community within England.
The Dragon was the emblem of Wessex, the territory of the West Saxons. It is the banner under which King Alfred the Great defeated the great Viking Army at the Battle of Edington and it was the banner carried by the mighty King Athelstan when he smashed the combined armies of the Scots, Welsh, Norse and Irish at the Battle of Brananburgh in 937.
We need to see our banner flown as a signal to everyone else that although we may well have been long forgotten about by our beloved leaders, we most certainly have not gone away and we are once again finding our voice.
In a world with few certainties this flag tells us who we are and from where we have come. It imparts a sense of permanence and continuity. It is a symbol of our identity, our common history, tradition and of the kinship of all the Anglo-Saxon people. It is also a stark reminder that in multi-cultural England unless we embrace these things then we will surely die.
The White Dragon Standards that the Saxon English had carried before their armies for possibly the last Milenia were done away with and replaced by the more continental Cross of St George. The English White Dragons very nearly disappeared, but not quite. They lived on, all be it, in a different form in the Heraldic symbols of Wessex, the cradle of the Saxon English nation.
Legend has it that the defeat of their Celtic enemies by the early Saxon English was foretold in a Prophecy. It goes that in an underground lake slept two Dragons. The Britons were represented by a Red Dragon and the Saxon English by a White Dragon. When they awoke they started fighting and the Red Dragon was overcome by the White Dragon, symbolically representing the victory of the Anglo-Saxons over their Celtic adversaries.
Various accounts of the times record battles between opposing armies of the Celtic British and the Saxon English, each carrying their own Dragon Battle Flag Standards. The Dragon of the Britons can still be seen in the Red Dragon of the Welsh flag. For the English it was the White Dragon emblem that proved most enduring.
The years around AD 450 witnessed the landing, in what was then Celtic Britain, of the first Anglo-Saxon War bands who were to go on and lay the foundation stones of what was to become the Saxon English Nation.
      *The White Dragon*
Both the English and the Welsh adopted the dragon as their Battle Flag. The Dragon of the Britons can still be seen in the Red Dragon of the Welsh flag while for the Saxon English it was the White Dragon which represented them in Battle. The Dragon was flown by Harold II, when he destroyed the Norse army at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066 and it was the banner under which he and his Warriors fought to the death, three weeks later defending their homeland.
      *Unity*
The Saxon Engles (English) became the dominant ethnic group and by the 9th century these settler invaders had merged into one Saxon English identity. The Saxon English gave their name to the land they lived in as Englalond, and the language they spoke was Englisc, which has evolved into modern English. It was those writing in Latin who called the English Angles and Anglo-Saxon. The invading settlers were closely related peoples - so similar in appearance and culture that they were able to merge into a single English identity after conquering the Royal Crown.
They arrived from the Germanic & Danish Engle or English, the Seax or Saxons, and the Jutes. From the Jutes came the people of Kent and the people of the Isle of Wight and the mainland opposite the Isle of Wight.
From the Saxons came the East Saxons (Essex) and the South Saxons (Sussex) and the West Saxons (Wessex).
From Saxon Anglen came the East Engle (East Anglia), Middle Engle (English Midlands), Mercians (Mercia), and all the Northumbrians (North of the Humber), which included those now known as the Lowland Scots.
*The White Dragon Flag of the English*
      Origins:
The Anglo-Saxon invasions, Wars, Conquests & expanded migration to Celtic Britain began in the 5th century AD. The most famed of the early Warring Invaders were Hengest and Horsa who arrived with their Warriors in three ships. In the following years many Warriors and migrant settlers crossed the sea and settled lowland Celtic Britain from East to West.
The Saxons were a group of Germanic peoples whose name was given in the early Middle Ages to a large Country region near the North Sea coast of Northern Germania, in what is now Germany. In the late Roman Empire, the name was used to refer to Germanic coastal Raiders, and also as a word something like the later "Viking".
      *Modern Times*
In the following centuries the flag of St George was adopted as the flag of Saxon England, which it still is. However, in modern times, when our country is seeing much change and turmoil, the White Dragon flag is being revived as the flag of the Saxon English. It is a symbol of our identity, our common history and of the kinship of all the Anglo-Saxon people.

*King Arthur & the Welsh Red Dragon*
Many regions of the UK would be happy to claim King Arthur as their own. There are countless myths and legends surrounding this historical character, with many believing that King Arthur had roots in Scotland’s history.
The stained glass window in Stobo Church in the Scottish Borders, depicts St Mungo (Kentigern) baptising Merlin (Myrddin).
In 573 AD following defeat in battle, when Merlin was fighting against King Arthur, he hid in the nearby Caledonian Wood Forrest.
In 580 AD Merlin and St Mungo met to negotiate Merlin’s return to favour, where the Pausayl Burn meets the River Tweed, near what are known today as Merlindale and Stobo.
This meeting inspired the local tradition that Merlin died at Drumelzier, near Stobo, although there is another Drumelzier, where Merlin is said to have died, a few miles south of Stirling.
According to Legend, King Arthur was buried on the Isle of Avalon in the Western Scottish Sea.
In the Sea off Scotland’s West Coast lies the Isle of Iona, where dozens of Scottish and other Kings are buried.
Iona is best known for the Christian Saint Columba and its Abbey, but long before Columba arrived, Iona was known as the burial place of the Mac Aedan family, including King Arthur.
They were buried in the Reilig Odhrain (the graveyard of Oran). Today you can visit the little Chapel dedicated to St Oran near the Abbey.
Merlin’s Druidic Grove changed purpose when St Mungo buried the first body there, a man called Fergus. A carved image of Fergus on the cart on which his body was brought to Glasgow can be seen in the Cathedral.
Outside in Cathedral Square, the images on the lamp posts commemorate Merlin’s twin sister, Languoreth the Queen.
King Arthur's messianic return is a mythological motif in the Legend of King Arthur, which claims that he will one day return in the role of a messiah to save his people. It is an example of the King asleep in Mountain motif. King Arthur was a legendary 6th Century British king. Few historical records of King Arthur remain.
So John Lydgate in his Fall of Princes (1431-38) notes the belief that Arthur "Shall resorte as Lord and Sovereyne Out of Fayrye and Regne in Breteyne" and Philip II of Spain apparently swore, at the time of his marriage to Mary I of England in 1554, that he would resign the Kingdom if King Arthur should return.
      *Influence on Medieval Politics*
The influence of Arthur's legend is not confined to novels, stories, and films; the legend of Arthur's messianic return has often been politically influential. On the one hand, it seems to have provided a means of rallying Welsh resistance to Anglo-Norman incursions in the 12th century and later. The Anglo-Norman text Description of Saxon England recounts of the Welsh that "Openly they go about saying/ That in the end, they will have all of Britain/ By means of Arthur, they will have it back/They will call it Britain again."
It may be that such references as this reflect a Welsh belief that Arthur ought to be associated with the "Y Mab Darogan" ("Son of Prophecy"), a messianic figure of the Welsh prophetic tradition who would repel the enemies of the Welsh and who was often identified with heroes such as Cadwaladr, Owain Lawgoch and Owain Glyndŵr in Welsh Prophetic verse.
On the other hand, the notion of Arthur's eventual return to rule a united Celtic Britain was adopted by the Plantagenet Kings to justify their rule.
Once King Arthur had been safely pronounced dead, in an attempt to deflate Welsh dreams of a genuine Arthurian return, the Plantagenets were then able to make ever greater use of Arthur as a political cult to support their dynasty and its ambitions. So, Richard I used his status as the inheritor of Arthur's realm to shore up foreign alliances, giving a sword reputed to be Excalibur to Tancred of Sicily.
The Galfridian claim that Arthur conquered Scotland & this tale was also used by Edward I to provide legitimacy to his claims of Saxon English suzerainty over that region.
      *Post-Medieval Politics*
The influence of the Legend of King Arthur on the political machinations of Saxon England's Kings was not confined to the Medieval period: the Tudors also found it expedient to make use of Arthur. In 1485, Henry VII marched through Wales to take the Saxon English throne under the banner of the Arthurian Red Dragon, he commissioned detailed genealogies to show his putative descent from Arthur, and named his first-born son Arthur.
Arthur has remained an occasionally politically potent figure through to the present era. In the 20th century, a comparison of John F. Kennedy and his White House with Arthur and Camelot, made by Kennedy's widow, helped consolidate Kennedy's posthumous reputation, with Kennedy even becoming associated with an Arthur-like messianic return in American folklore.
The Welsh Dragon (Welsh: y Ddraig Goch, meaning 'the red dragon'; pronounced [ə ˈðraiɡ ˈɡoːχ]) is a heraldic symbol that appears on the national flag of Wales. The oldest recorded use of the dragon to symbolise Wales is in the Historia Brittonum, written around AD 829, but it is popularly supposed to have been the battle standard of King Arthur and other ancient Celtic leaders.
*The Welsh Dragon is also one of The Queen's Beasts.*
Each of The Queen's Beasts consists of an heraldic beast supporting a shield bearing a badge or arms of a family associated with the ancestry of Queen Elizabeth II.
The statues were placed left to right in the following order when facing the annex from the west:
The Lion of England, the Greyhound, the Yale, the Dragon, the Horse, the Lion of Mortimer, the Unicorn, the Griffin, the Bull, and the Falcon.
In the Mabinogion story Lludd and Llefelys, the Red Dragon fights with an invading White Dragon. His pained shrieks cause women to miscarry, animals to perish and plants to become barren. Lludd, King of Britain, goes to his wise brother Llefelys in France. Llefelys tells him to dig a pit in the centre of Britain, fill it with mead, and cover it with cloth. Lludd does this, and the Dragons drink the mead and fall asleep. Lludd imprisons them, still wrapped in their cloth, in Dinas Emrys in Snowdonia (Welsh: Eryri).
The tale is taken up in the Historia Brittonum. The two Warring Dragons remain at Dinas Emrys for centuries until King Vortigern tries to build a Castle there. Every night the Castle walls and foundations are demolished by unseen forces. Vortigern consults his advisers, who tell him to find a boy with no natural father, and sacrifice him. Vortigern finds such a boy (who is later known as Merlin) who is supposed to be the Wisest Wizard to ever live.
On hearing that he is to be put to death to end the demolition of the walls, the boy Merlin is dismissive of the advice, and tells the King about the two Dragons. Vortigern excavates the hill, freeing the Dragons. They continue their fight and the Red Dragon finally defeats the White Dragon.
The boy Merlin tells Vortigern that the White Dragon symbolises the Saxons and that the Red Dragon symbolises the Celtic people of Vortigern. If Vortigern is accepted to have lived in the 5th century, then these people are the Celtic Britons whom the Saxons failed to subdue entirely and who became the Welsh.
The same story is repeated in Geoffrey of Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain, where the Red Dragon is also a Prophecy of the coming of King Arthur. Note that Arthur's Father was named Uther Pendragon ('Pendragon': 'Pen' (Head) and 'Dragon', being translated aas "Dragon's Head".
Upon the accession of the Stuart dynasty, uniting the Crowns of Saxon England and Scotland, the Welsh Red Dragon was displaced in favour of a Scottish Unicorn, which remains the co-supporter of the Royal Arms to this day. Upon the death of Elizabeth I, therefore, Wales ceased to be represented on the Royal Arms in any form.
In 1953, the Red Dragon badge of the Welsh was given an augmentation of honour. The augmented badge is blazoned: Within a circular band Argent fimbriated Or bearing the motto "Y DDRAIG GOCH DDYRY CYCHWYN" or "The Red Dragon Inspires Action".
Other examples include Stephen R. Lawhead's novel Avalon: The Return of King Arthur (1999), featuring a reincarnated Arthur who rises to power to restore the British Monarchy as it is about to be abolished.
