That was the purpose of the look and it was fashionable at the time. Diana especially in her younger days was a slave to fashion.

Yes, it did look somewhat tacky, and as though she had forgotten to put the real outfit on top. Years ago I made myself a plain evening/nightclub dress from a petticoat pattern. It was princess line with a little dart at the bust to bring the fabric into the front of the body. It had a round neckline which was faced and interfaced (not straps). It was a deep shimmery purple satin, and I added a decorative trim round the armholes and neck line, it. was a heavyweight fabric so it hung beautifully and sleekly. I also used the same pattern to make cotton dresses for holidays abroad., and I made some for a work colleague who was having her first holiday abroad I've still got the pattern.

The Biggest insult Dior is doing is refusing to make her an ambassador or calling her in order to dress her. Dior sees the meg playing dress up and their silence screams "we are not impressed"
I think Catherine doesn't wear Dior because Camilla wears it frequently. Catherine in Dior would immediately cause headlines like "Head to head: Who wore it best?" and the media would make a mountain out of it, insinuating Catherine is deliberately making a point by trying to out-dress Camilla, or trying to antagonise her.
Princess Catherine has a model figure. Her commitment to British designers is wonderful as they’re not showcased nearly enough. She projects a unique British look whether country casual to a goddess extraordinaire. She is a truly stunning woman with excellent taste, stature and confidence.

I do not like Diana’s slip dress. I don’t like the appearance of my underthings showing.
It's crazy but the top of that slip dress reminds me of Me-Me's red hanging niples atrocity.
I loved that vintage one from Princess Caroline.
I think that this slip dress was not as successful on Princess Diana because the lace at the top of the bodice does look like her bra is showing as Beebs said. It looks like Diana is wearing her underthings, having forgot her dress. Princess Diana wore so many fabulous outfits, that having a look miss on occasion is understandable. I also think that the necklace was too heavy above the delicate lace.
@@westzed23Oddly, that was the look she was going for. The coat she wore when arriving was designed to look like a silk robe over her lingerie. Her divorce had just been finalized and she wanted to look very non-royal. So go looking like you’re in your underwear? She was worried the lingerie look would embarrass Prince William.

If you remember there was a ‘is he or isn’t he coming’ to the Coronation discussion. I think Dior had to rush out a morning suit for him and royally cocked it up.
The Meg unfortunately has not made good clothing choices ever - wrong style, wrong occasion, wrong fitting, wrong, wrong, wrong. I don’t believe she has ever had or has never listened to, any stylist or fashion advice. It’s a huge shame as the amount she has spent on clothing could support a small country 😢

Remember by the time Princess Margaret wore that gorgeous ,voluminous dress in 1951 the UK had only recently finished the rationing period for clothing. Ten years of ' Make do and Mend ' and a coupon scheme for clothing meant a dress like this would have been a real departure from what we had been used to seeing.
Beebs, I know you think Prince Harry wearing Dior to the Coronation looked “sharp “, but if you look at him from the back view he had put on the jacket which had not been pressed and had fold creases. It looked dreadful!
He's used to having people make sure he's impeccably dressed- at least he was before the smeg. Now he's emulated his wife in dressing from the pile of clothes that are on the floor!

The concrete/stone coat she wore for the Platinum jubilee. The bigger problem was that her hat was a thinner fabric than the outfit. Hats must be the same thickness/weight of the outfit.

You are so correct. The balance was off due to the weight of the hat. It was a summer weight hat with a autumn weight coat dress and gloves.
I never even noticed the hat because I was completely distracted by the lump on her right boob. Lots of people have said she was miked up at that event. If that lump wasn't a concealed microphone, it needs checking by a doctor.

Markle is/was so clueless about the royals and the history of English royalty that she would have had no idea that several fashion houses have a long standing history with the royal family and that she has been such a divisive figure for them that, perhaps on principal alone, they want nothing to do with her.

I don't think Princess Catherine has ever worn Dior, Chanel I've seen on her. But she is so beautiful and tailors her clothes to fit, proper foundation pieces and appropriate for the occasion. She is every design houses dream to dress. I imagine Dior would be dancing in the streets like they did after the end of the last world war if she called to order a new dress or outfit. She wears clothes, they don't wear her. She always looks fantastic in her presentation. When she wears something, it sells out and anything like it too. She is guaranteed great publicity for whatever designer she wears.
Can a fashion house refuse to allow, not sell but absolutely refuse to allow, someone to wear their clothes? If they could Dior definitely need too!!!
If you haven't seen it, watch the recent remake of Mrs Harris Goes To Paris. The costume designer recreated lots of post-war late 40s/early 50s Dior gowns, and they are so beautiful. Its a lovely feelgood movie, and the cast is perfect.

She focuses on British designers, except occasionally to wear a designer from a country she's visiting. I don't think she's done many official visits to France.
The most important fact about Dior was the 1947 "new look" which had a feminie profile w large skirts..celebrating the end of WWII and shortages in fabrics. It changed 20th c fashion history. Photos abound from those legendary PAris collections.
I was fortunate enough to see Princess Margarets dress at the Dior exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum a few years ago. Diana's slip dress was there too, not my favourite on her though. It was a breathtaking exhibition.
I saw that exhibition too! It was amazing - so many wonderful dresses and costumes.
I agree it was a beautiful exhibition and the dress was amazing. Today I'm going to see the Chanel exhibition in London.
It's great, not, in my opinion,as good as the Dior exhibition,but worth a visit. I found Mademoiselle's history, especially wartime period, interesting.

Another informative and visually great show Beebs! I'm in the UK and old enough to have slept on the pavement to see Lady Diana Spencer become HRH The Princess of Wales - what memories - a hot sunny July day - and an amazing atmosphere. Diana absolutely rocked Dior and Versace. After the divorce she just looked amazing in everything - a chance to be a bit more daring but her style and impeccable attention to detail - she just looked amazing in anything - like Catherine - but definitely NOT Just Call Me H's current wife.
Can we just reflect on the fact that Princess Margaret’s ballgown dress had a 21 inch waist? How many of us could wear that today, even at 21 years old?

According to British protocol, when in the UK, Princess Catherine tries to help UK designers as a representative of the country (as much as possible, it's not an absolute rule). She would wear designers from the country she visits on tour if she has to buy pieces for events (as per protocol too), unless it's a re-wear. Even for her wedding she wore a UK designer's dress. I do think it's a good thing, it gives visibility to the companies of the country and helps the economy as well as the workers, from the couture house to the shops.

@@IStandWithCatherineFrom what I remember Princess Diana wore plenty of British designers, it was only after her divorce she really ramped up the glamour with Channel, Versace etc. The present queen has been dressed for years by Bruce Oldfield and she epitomises British country style in tweeds, waxed cotton. When in Scotland wears the most fabulous tartan skirts and coats. She doesn't pretend to be a fashion icon, she dresses for the job and looks good. Her best look in my opinion is formal evening dress and the big set piece jewellery suites which come out on important occasions.
Queen Camilla’s cape dress in France should be a poster look for the design house. Beautiful! And she looked gorgeous in it. Princess Charlene of Monaco also makes the brand look beautiful.

I think Catherine sticks to British designers, maybe the Commonwealth too. Probably because she is mindful as she was heavily criticized her early years and Dior is both French but also expensive. I also think Dior has a chic elegance but Catherine is more down to Earth elegance. It’s likely she’ll look stunning in a Dior piece, as it’s working with two different beauties.

If there was a mic, it would have been more likely in the front, under that overly large collar.
There was an Australian broadcaster that has footage of something looking like a small frisby tucked into the front of her coat and she was fussing with the left collar point often as she was walking. I suspect the microphone story is true. Not to mention Major Jonnie Thompson was sitting right behind that pair.

Princess Margaret looked stunning in her full skirt dress. She was a real fashion easter. The full skirts were such a break from the straight skirts of the 40s which were a result of fabric rationing. In the UK Clothes rationing remained in place until March 1949 and it was not until the early 1950s that most people could walk into a shop and be confident they could purchase an outfit that they dreamt off.

Why can't she buy the right size? The Morocco dress was 100000 pounds, you'd have thought she could have spent a couple of hundred quid on a good bra and slip.

Princess Margaret’s gown had a 21.65 inch waist! Now I know 18” was the strived for number at one point, but come on! 21 inches! It looked so tiny! My favorite dress was the delicate blue mini dress with ivory embroidery (or white?) and short sleeves. The beautiful cream wedding dress you featured on a Monaco Royal, I found it to make her hips look so narrow as to be boyish. Wide shoulders & extremely narrow hips. Gorgeous dress, horrible choice for her body. I quite agree on everything else you mentioned & think The House of Dior is an absolutely stunning collection of femininity! I personally love it! I never liked Diana’s slip dress. It looked like a nightie. I remember the mocking in the magazines when she wore it. It wasn’t entirely well received.
I have to give credit that Meg’s navy blue boat neck is one of her better outfits. I always thought she chose the navy to attach herself to the military around her, pseudo importance or credibility if you will.
Camilla’s nave cape dress is one of my faves. The contrast with her white hair is fabulous.
That cream maternity number would have to be one of the worst things she’s ever worn. It looks like she wrapped a sheet around herself in a 5 year olds version of an Arabian Sheik from an old movie.
It must be exhausting for you to critique Megsie's wardrobe decisions because of her many missteps due to wrong choices or not having proper fittings done or wrong undergarments or colors. I really enjoyed your entire episode. I loved seeing the many royals.
The Meg's dark blue Dior...look at Harry. I think she was trying to match him like she did with the red dress at that military event. She wore the stupid nude shoes because it was spring, but I think the dress is that colour to try to match with him.
Edit: That white dress for the Jubilee always makes me think of Carmen Sandiego.
Edit #2 - I don't think Catherine has ever worn Dior. She tends to stick to British designers and more affordable brands. Even when they went to Paris, she wore Chanel.

I love a good silk slip dress. I didn’t like the one Diana wore. I didn’t care for that particular lace and how wide it was, it killed it for me, made it look more like sleep wear.
I like most everything Diana wore, but not the slip dress.
Princess Margaret’s ball gown is stunning. My other favorite was the sleek look on the Princess of Monaco’s first dress. That dress was gorgeous.
Harry's wife wore an outfit to the platinum jubilee that looked like she channelled Wallis Simpson.
I loved this video. I don’t know how I missed it when it first was released. I’m just going to add my thoughts here now though. I love the clean, classic, unfussy look of Dior. The woman wears the dress and is beautiful in the dress; not the dress wears the woman. Christian Dior understood what a woman is and what makes her look best. He knew women’s figures and how to highlight them with fashion.
Now my last comment is: I want to be a Princess and I want to wear these beautiful clothes and if I can get rid of Harry I will take Meghan’s place right now. I can do the job because I can listen, learn and keep my mouth shut!! Someone make it happen now!!!!
Hi Beebs, you forgot to mention that Harry’s Dior suit at the King’s coronation was extremely creased and looked really bad especially from the back
Queen Camilla has such an unassuming, effortless gait, and there lies her appeal and why she comes off looking totally royal! As far as Harry’s wife goes, I’ve seen her in only two outfits that may be deemed remotely ok on her. Otherwise she always looks like she got entangled in windblown sheets hanging in one’s backyard.
Given Princess Margaret's gown had diagonal embroidery on the shirt, the asymmetric neckline brought balance to the look.
Princess Charlene of Monaco is a swimmer, so, yes, she has swimmer's shoulders. I'd love to have more on her wedding dress and her stunning tiara! I believe The Court Jeweler has some good background on it
Maybe the POW will wear Dior on a trip to France or at a State banquet/ event for France. She's generally very loyal to British brands but will wear designers from the country she's visiting. She's very good at diplomatic dressing.
As for the meg.... her superpower is taking a beautiful outfit and turning it into trash. I've never seen anyone wear such expensive clothes so badly.

Truly stunning fashion house , its really sad that Catherine hasn’t worn Dior . However Princess Diana looked truly beautiful in Dior . its her that got me into wearing suits which i wear to this day ,i fell into classic designs and stuck with them .
I hadn’t realised Catherine Princess of Wales hadn’t worn Dior. I also noted the absence of Queen Mary of Denmark too. As they wear a lot of the same dresses, albeit often in different colours, I wonder if Dior just doesn’t appeal to them?

The RAF Centenary service at Westminster Abbey was in July 2018 on the 9th +/- 1 day), which makes the dark dress even worst. In was in London that specific day and was wearing a short white and yellow sleeveless dress to match the weather. (No, I did not took part of the ceremony at Westminster Abbey 😉)

FYI when Queen mum was queen she had a family death ? someone not sure who . Next day King & Queen were to travel to France and HMQMum started a fabulous trend by wearing white . People raved about it !!
You could have featured Beatrice Borromeo Casiraghi, Princess Caroline's exquisite daughter-in-law, as an example of a good Dior fit. After all, she is a brand ambassador for the house.
I love the current Queen's midnight gown and cape for the State visit to France.
