  • Life is full of negotiations. Chris Voss, author of Never Split the Difference sits down with Shane Parrish on The Knowledge Project and uncovers the timeless art of negotiation and letting other people have your way.
    Show notes: fs.blog/knowledge-project-pod...
Here are a few of the things you’ll learn in this video:
    1. What it really takes to be great at negotiating (most people approach it all wrong)
    2. How to keep your emotions in check during a negotiation
    3. The three different voices you can use to connect with your counterpart and put them at ease
    4. How many of us “take ourselves hostage” in negotiation and ruin it before it starts
    5. The biggest timewaster (and profit-killer) that plagues so many negotiations
    6. The main problems with traditional negotiation techniques (BATNA, etc.) and how they’re leaving lots on the table
    7. How empathy saves time and makes you more likely to get what you want in a negotiation
    8. Why intentionally getting the other party to say “no” substantially increases the success rate of a negotiation

Totally agreed. Since listening to this interview when it was released I have heard Chris in several other interviews and read his book. This is still the best interview and the one I refer people to when telling them about Chris Voss.

This is really great! This the first interview I’ve heard of Chris Voss (who I admire quite a lot...) where he went off-script and just talked. Very informative. I learned a lot. Says a lot about the interviewer! Thank you!!!

"Negotiation skills are perishable and you don't know (while you're still sharp from good training). They erode invisibly." Brilliant. Your observation about how people respond to the direct and honest voice explains a lot about how the passion of a blunt tone comes across in a harsh manner to the receiving side, when the sending side seems to unconsciously raise their voice as they tell themselves they aren't being heard when in reality they are. Thank you for sharing so much clarifying insight about how we can stop unintentionally taking ourselves hostage when we recognize the context of how communication components move together.

Check out Chris Voss' interview with Tom Ferry, you'll turn it off in less than 15 minutes. Despite Mr. Voss being someone you want to listen to, the host is so horrible he makes it impossible. I agree, this host does a fantastic job.

Yeah this is definitely one of the better and or best interview with chris I've seen and heard. Great job Shane sorry that this does not have more views or is one of the more popular ones. You could definitely use a better mic. Other then that amazing interview. Blue series mic's make a good podcast USB if you are not using a pre amp. Also another really good cheap one is the Samson meteor mic it's like 60 bucks I made a whole mixtape with it people said it sounded phenomenal.
