John Madara and David White wrote the song and Lesley Gore was first to record it in 1963. Dusty followed in 1964. This was one of the first feminist anthems.

Written by a male songwriting team and produced by Quincy Jones in 1963. Lesley Gore was a huge teen star at the time.

Lesley tells the boy in the song that she's not going to tell him what to do or try to change him. Lesley recorded the song in 1963. Dusty Springfield covered the song in 1964. I find Lesley's version more powerful because she was 17 years old when she recorded it. Dusty was 25.

My first album when I was 9 years old was Lesley Gore - It's My Party - produced by Quincy Jones. This song was on that album.

Yes, as great as Dusty Springfield is, Lesley Gore is certainly the OG for this and, along with It's My Party, her calling card then and for the following decades. "The Golden Hits Of Lesley Gore" is a (the) treasure trove of her gems. Among the "usual" great mentions, Maybe I Know and Look Of Love (no relation to the Bacharach hit) are a few to check out that are not only very representative of her work but so emblematic of that more carefree (for many) early 60's era. I grew up to Lesley on my 9 transistor and family car radio. Among solo artists, she ruled the Top 40 from 1963-1965. Harri, great to see you doing a dive into Lesley Gore's music. As a teen wonder, she was an outsized powerhouse whose prolific catalog in such a short time belied her young years.

first recorded by leslie in 1963 and then covered by dusty the following year. saw leslie in an oldies show about 20 years ago in hartford , conn. with 5 or 6 other bands from that era. terrific show. i remember her guest starring on the batman tv show in the 60's as pussycat - one of catwoman's minions. kind of silly - like the show - but very funny. she sadly passed on from lung cancer in 2015 at 68.

Haven't heard this in a long while. Thanks for the reaction. My best friend and I used to work part time at a roller rink back in the late 70's and early 80's and she loved Leslie"s song "Sunshine, Lolipops and Rainbows". She borrowed her 45 to the assistant organist so he could learn it and play it for her on the pipe organ.

I much admire this number by her. I have scrolled thru all 45 comments so far, and no one has mentioned that she came out as lesbian in 2005. Having to sing songs such as "That's the Way Boys Are" must have been hard for her.

I've been waiting a long time for someone to react to this song by Lesley Gore. Her rendition is so lovely and powerful, it makes one want to pull the car to the side of the road and just listen.
I've never heard the Dusty Springfield version. Gore was a very powerful female vocalist in her day, with one hit after another.

Lesley Gore, was an American singer, songwriter & actress. At the age of 16, she recorded "It's My Party" in 1963. She followed it up with many more hits including "Judy's Turn to Cry", "That's The Way Boys Are", "Maybe I Know", "Look Of Love", "Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows" etc. Sadly she died in 2015.

The dating of that time was that the woman didn't going steady with one guy. She dated different guys until she got a pin which told everyone that you are now steady with guy who gave you the pin. It's like a pre engagement instead of a promise ring. Common dating practice of the 50's and 60's.

This is an iconic song. It was used in the closing scene of the movie "The First Wives Club". You should react to that video. It's sung and danced to by Bette Midler, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn. ( if you haven't seen the movie, the premise is 3 women whose husbands divorced them for younger women and the wives got even)
