    The 45 Shield rocks! I have always enjoyed small 45s. I had a Glock 30s and some small 1911s but the Shield 45 is my favorite. Just small enough with adequate capacity.

      I have them both, Performance Center 9 and Shield 45. Both are great carry guns. What I noticed is the 9mm can be carried right against the skin in warm weather when using tee shirt for cover. The 45 with it’s extra stick-ling tends to rub skin raw, so I use it when cooler, tee tucked with a cover garment.

    Magguts just came out with the +2 round magazine extension for the M&P shield 9mm if you are into that. It adds 0.25 inches of length to either the flush or extended mag. We're talking about 10 or 11 total rounds with one magazine if you add the +1 in the chamber, that's pretty high capacity for such a small package.

    I got them both today. The $75 mail in rebate helps!!! Currently $245/9mm and $275/45 shipped, after rebate. I haven't shot them yet, but I really like the .45 in the way it feels and the trigger. I really think that the next generation 9 will have the same grip texture. Time to get some holsters and put some rounds down range!

    I have both and currently carry the .45 Shield. My 9mm Shield is my summer EDC gun. I have ONE gripe about the .45 Shield: S&W needs to include a mag loader with it. Loading more than 4 rounds in a mag DEMANDS a mag loader.

  • @jimjn14
    @jimjn14 Před 7 lety +5

    Good comparison. One round more in 9mm to leave smaller holes all the time? I'll take the 45... The 45 rounds are a bit heaver but not a big deal really. I have the performance version and love it! As for the sharpness of the grip design, I applied one of the stick on aftermarket coverings. It feels and works great! I have the same thing on my Full Size Beretta 45 Storm. Coverings are very comfortable and cut out any chafing. I can carry either comfortably. The have been on my Storm for at least a year now and still no issues at all. They also make several kinds now too. FYI: I absolutely all around love my Full Size Storm!!! They just don't make a 45 compact or sub compact. The S&W MP Shield is a real nice piece.

    I'M A PISTOLSMITH IN TEXAS THAT STARTED MY TRADE IN 1973, IT WAS NOT EASY, BUT I JUST SPECIALIZE IN EXTENSIVE TRIGGER WORK. I WATCHED YOUR WELL DONE VIDEO ON THIS SMALL 45ACP SHIELD, OF WHICH I WILL REFER TO MY CUSTOMERS.
    MY OPINIONS COME FROM REALITY OF BEING FROM THE STREETS OF BROOKLYN BUT I WAS IN LAW ENFORCEMENT. WHEN I SEE A 45ACP PISTOL IT IS STRICTLY MY OPINION THAT IT MUST HAVE A 4.25 INCH BARREL IN ORDER TO GET ANY VELOCITY FROM A 230 GRAIN HARD BALL BULLET. WHEN A FACTORY TELLS YOU THE LENGTH OF THEIR BARREL, IT IS SMOKE AND MIRRORS BECAUSE THEY ARE INCLUDING THE CHAMBER. SO IF SW SAYS IT'S A 3.3 INCH BARREL, YOU ARE ONLY GETTING 2.3 INCHES OF RIFLING, THEREFORE I WOULD NEVER CARRY THAT 45 SHIELD WITH ANYTHING BUT A 165, OR A 185 GRAIN BULLET AND VERY FAST BURNING POWDER SUCH AS BULLSEYE OR ACCURATE ARMS #2.
    I AM EXPRESSING MY PERSONAL OPINION ONLY, MY FAVORITE POWDER IS VHITA VHUORI, MADE IN FINLAND.
    I CARRIED A COLT GOV. MODEL FOR YEARS BUT NEVER CARRIED 230 BULLETS. I AM EXPRESSING MY PERSONAL OPINION AS I WORK ON OVER 100 DIFFERENT MODELS OF HAND GUNS AND LEGALLY CARRY ONE.
    YOUR VIDEOS ARE VERY GOOD AND I THANK YOU.

      The fast burning powder in short barrels is a myth. I handload 120 grain Lehigh xtreme defenders with Ramshot Silhouette to +p pressure, and they go over 1300 fps in my Shield 45. Silhouette is a relatively slow powder. With the same powder and the 90 grain 9mm xd bullets, I get 1300 fps from a Sig p365. A fast powder like Titegroup doesn’t come close out of 3” barrels.

    Great video. I got to shoot 100 rounds through a factory new M&P .45 Shield after getting an amazing deal today :-D. Amazing performance. Minimal kick for a .45, no misfires or missfeeds, sexy, reliable, powerful, fast as all get-out! An excellent buy, period. I noticed a few gripes (slide release is TOUGH [slingshot is a must], magazine's gotta be pushed in... that's actually about it!) that are very easily overlooked by all of its benefits. Excellent overview Hegshot87; very down to earth for those wanting to know more about the benefits of this platform for CC/EDC. I'm a .45 guy, so the choice was obvious. The improvements they made from the 9mm (such as the grip, and trigger) are simply amazing. I feel safe with this sidearm at the ready.

    You mentioned the difficulty in finding after-market goodies - and you said it over 3.5 years ago. I recently purchased the M&P Shield 2.0 Performance Center in .45 and I haven’t yet found a shoulder holster for it. I prefer a shoulder rig when I’m riding. Have two Galco shoulder rigs for my current EDC (a Colt Defender) and they’re fine - but they don’t seem to have holster modules for the M&P Shield 2.0. So, for now, it’s a Urban Carry OWB. Oh well….

    Mrs. Hegshot87 might have better luck with a holster that offers a claw attachment to pull the grip into the body more for decreased printing.

    Have you loosened the tension screw on your holster to accommodate the slightly wider .45? That worked for me in using my holster for a Smith and Wesson 442 with a Taurus 856 (6 shot vs 5 shot).

    I have been thinking about getting the .45 shield, been checking out the 4 inch model, but not sure if I should just go with an officer or commander model 1911. Both are thin and concealable, the same basic capacity, but the main problem for me is that I can shoot right handed, but I prefer shooting lefty, and neither platforms are lefty friendly. Decisions, decisions.

  • @renerodriguez2364
    @renerodriguez2364 Před 5 lety

    Great comparison video and great demonstration. A woman shooting especially shows the difference in recoil more so than with a man shooting because of forearm grip strength. I would go with the performance center ported 45 acpover the 9mm. Nothing wrong with 9mm of course, but for close up self defense you won’t beat the 230gr jhp or a 200gr+p. Now that is a manstopper. Tell your wife great job...she uses very good form. Thanks for this video it is by far the best comparison I’ve seen yet on the Shield.

  • @PPISAFETY
    @PPISAFETY Před 7 lety

    I think you have done a very good job of outlining the differences that actually matter between these two Shields. There are two points I would like to make, and I apologize if I missed them in your video.
    First of all, you did something really good when you compared the 9mm Shield with the extended magazine to the .45 Shield with the flush fit magazine and showed they were essentially the same. Most reviewers do not do this. What you effectively showed though is that the difference between the guns, when made the same size, is effectively 2 rounds, not 1, as the spec sheet would have one believe. I have both guns, and typically carry the 9mm IWB with the extended magazine in it, for a total of 9 rounds in-gun as opposed to the 7 I would have with the .45 made the same size. I find that the extended magazine in the .45 prints a bit much for in-gun use, but that is just a personal observation.
    The second point is the expense to shoot both guns. If you compare the price of practice ammo in 9mm and .45, in a year's time you could have bought a 9mm Shield with the difference. This is not inconsequential, and as a full-time professional firearms instructor, I can say that it is easier for most new people to learn on a 9mm than with a .45. I also was able to purchase a factory night-sighted 9mm Shield with 3 magazines, brand new, for the same price as a standard sight .45 with 2 mags.
    Having said all of that, I really like the .45 Shield. It fits my hand better, and like you, I'm willing to put up with a little bigger gun. I've also got 40 years of experience with the .45. So the Shield that is in the safe for use in training students is a 9mm, and the one that is on my hip when I leave the house is a .45. But I also know that for me, that choice is more about the heart than it is the head. I just have lots of confidence in that fat old .45 slug, because when I started out in the 70's, the 9mm didn't work well. Now it does, which is why I recommend it as a first choice.
    Let me also say that I've been watching your vids for a while now. The first one I ever saw was one you did on an M&P Compact. You've come a long way since then in your reviewing style and skills and you are doing some really great work. I know how much time and effort goes into these things. Keep up the good work..

    Shot the shield 9 for comparison against PPS M2, bought and have since sold the latter. Current own and enjoy both Shield 40 & 45. Shoot that 45 Shield better than any of my firearms, Glock 30 included, but closely gaining ground with my 40's and 9's. Mouse guns (22lr, 32acp, 380acp) serve a different purpose all together.

    I like both caliburs, my favorite range gun is my Colt 1911, but unless you live in a state where you can't use hollow-points you are better off with a 9mm. Balistically there is no real difference in end result plus you have more ammo, lower recoil, and the ammo is way cheaper. If you can only use ball ammo then a .45 has a real advantage.

    A bit unrelated but since mags seem to be a topic here... I run the 7 round 9mm mag with Mag-guts spring kits giving me 9 rounds per mag with a very slight length added to the mags make it perfect for a full grip with no pinky dangle... So 1 in the chamber 9 in the mag in the stock shield size. BTW these are shorter than the 8 round mags without that stupid sleeve that I hate so much
