For me it has always been a big rock/metal family. I don't really like separating these two genres, even though it's fun in a way. Purple, Sabbath, Scorpions, Rainbow, Motörhead, it's all the same for me.
How I classify heavy metal is if they palm metal their riffs to make it heavier, If that makes since, so Van Halen has a little heavy metal. But all the rest are basically Hard Rock. Black Sabbath didn't really palm mute until later but I would consider them heavy metal some times haha. Anyways that is my take.
Led Zeppelin was an early pioneer of Heavy Metal. They created a template which everyone including Deep Purple and Black Sabbath followed suit with their own personal styles
@@manitheman0806 No doubt about that, Led Zeppelin certainly created the template that would be utilized by both heavy metal and hard rock bands of the time. I would still label them as ‘proto-metal’ rather than heavy metal, but that’s just my interpretation.
Judas Priest 70s era great

@@fjuczer730 That’s totally fair. After all, metal did start as a subgenre of rock music.

@@JustAnotherHeavyMetalManiac You can also label them a hard rock folk band .....Where you see the Fairport Convention influence as well.
Black Sabbath are metal, no questions. I always thought Van Halen and AC/DC have elements that could make them a metal band.
@@tainted_lord87 You could make an argument for those two, but I’ve always thought of AC/DC and Van Halen as rock bands personally.
@@JustAnotherHeavyMetalManiac AC/DC are metal then Led Zeppelin is.
Led Zeppelin wasn’t heavy metal, they did hard rock songs. They may have influenced heavy metal, but even they said they weren’t.
@@sicotshit7068 Agreed, they definitely influenced metal bands, but they are a hard rock band first and foremost.
@@JustAnotherHeavyMetalManiac if they were, I wouldn’t have loved them for 50 years. I’m not a heavy metal fan girl.
