- The film "Creative Hearts and Minds of the Nez Perce takes you on an educational adventure. Learn from the Nimiipuu historian/storyteller Nakia Williams about the deep relationship the Nimiipuu have with the land in North Central Idaho. Take a trip up Hells Canyon with Stacia Morfin: story teller, dancer and founder of Nez Perce tourism. Listen to Roger Amerman and learn about traditional horse masks with the Appaloosas Pisaqus and Mioxat. Watch as Mikailah Thompson, a young bead artist skillfully shares her contemporary and traditional vision of this art. Follow high schooler Brandon McHone as he begins his pilgrimage as a modern storyteller by using the medium of film. Hello, I was born on the Yakima valley reservation, I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and I am non-tribal. Both of my parents have Mexican blood but I have always felt a strong connection with the land and nature. This video is well done and I'd like to learn more?

Hi Brandon, thank you for the documentary. It was very informative. I watch everything I can about the different tribes. I heard how Chief Joseph and his people had their horses stolen and killed. This made me cry because i would have never wanted anyone to take my horses from me. I have seen one of my horses being held by 2 of my ancestors. Only have some Native American Indian through a great great grandmother from Canada and New york area. They NAI'S had a feather in their black long hair and were holding and brushing my horse. They had on buckskin. One of my kittys was on a rock watching. I was told, in the dream, that my horses,cats and dogs were being cared for. Every animal that I keep or is taken from me will be mine forever. If I give or sell an animal it will be no longer mine. The Creator of the Universe made us all, and we are to take care of the animals and all of the earth and all of the creations. We are humans and animals loved and are kin. The most precious times of my life were with my horse while walking through the woods and running him across the fields and above all, talking to my horse. I thank you for all the pictures and all the beadwork. The pieces are made with love and skill. I was thinking if I could buy bead work, and the lady came on saying she has sold some of her work. I am so happy that their are many Appaloosa horses being raised. They could tell us many stories about their ancestors just as we do. I have watched this video 2 times and will find it again. Hope you continue with your gift of telling and showing your beautiful people. I am very proud of you.

pride in your work with this presentation of the Nez Perce history and on to the present day.
I love history and although I am from New England I have a special curiosity for all Native Americans across the country particularly the Nez Perce. I have raised Appaloosa horses most of my life and find it admirable the pride they took in their horses and even practiced selective breeding through gelding inferior stallions and spaying mares as well, which I find quite a feat due to the fact spaying is an invasive surgery.
I absolute love the format, no narrator just people telling their stories in their colorful attire

I had a blue roan Appy for 33 years. When he crossed he took part of my soul with him to Heaven. No human words to express my grief for my baby. After 20 years I cry just thinking about him or seeing an Appy. 😭😭💔💔💔😭

Imagine if we all wanted to go back to our roots and tap in to where we came from in different parts of the world the Bible says sufficient today are the cares there of we don’t have time to go live in the past we gotta live in the present life is but short, the flower blooms for the day, and then fades away the grass grows, and then Fades away, so do our lives. Forget the past let’s live for the present, and for the future.

My grandmother said I had an ancestor who was Nez Perce, so it's fun to learn about my people :)
Beautiful documentary. This really helps me as I didn't grow up on the reservation or have anyone to guide me. Wasn't until I was 27 that my bio-father belongs to Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indian. Wasn't until now that I'm 36 learning my roots I didn't know were there. Things like this really help! Love that I'm learning some of the Anishinaabe language.

We as Native and First Nations people need our lands back.
The road cuts show that there was considerable volcanic activity in the area. It looks like layers of hardened black lava as well as layers of ash. That makes for rich soil!

Interesting link. The spelling is different but there's no written language. Everything was passed down by Home Schooling and the sharing and retelling of important knowledge, information, wisdom, and the stories of many different things, passed down from generation to generation, until the flood of immigrants and Americans, diseases from all sorts of places and foreign people. Genocide and the inhuman treatment of the natives continues in some places to this very day. I have homeschooled my teenagers on the road when their mom was doing travel nursing. It's Fantastic and I Highly commend you for taking on the task and in my humble opinion, will have your kids smarter than learning what's in school. Especially in today's environmental conditions and political climate. With this internet, you can learn trillions and trillions of things, free of charge, and no dang application to a college to suck your bank account dry. Lol. I've been aware of my Nez Perce/Nimiipuu heritage for a long time, and I really want to learn more about it but I'm worried I'm too pale, or not native enough. I don't want to disrespect anyone's culture, or invite myself into a space that's not for me, but at the same time I want to know more about that part of my family/heritage. I don't know anyone from that part of my family which sucks, I don't know if my grandfather had other children, or siblings, for all I know I could have family on the res and not know it, all i know for sure is that my grandmother is buried there. My father and I where never close and the few chances ive had to ask him things, he never had an answer unfortunately. But back to my point, would it be disrespectful for me to try and learn more, or to reach out in some way?
A way to answer your questions would be to contact the cultural resource council at the Nimiipuu tribe. Call the tribes direct number at 208-843-2253 and ask for cultural resources .
Same here. My family descendants of Chief Joseph. Sensitive about intrusiveness being half Irish and Niimiipuu. But Iam willing to listen. Willing to embrace my other tribal family. Next spring is a journey.
There's no mention of Chief Joseph their war time chief. And the Nez Perce were responsible for the Appaloosa breed. It was bred for its speed and stamina.

I wish the eradication efforts never happened. What a loss. What a loss. Imagine, if all the tribes were left as they were and proper peace treaties were made .
Tribal peoples were eradicating each other for hundreds of years before the colonists showed up. European / Christian culture is actually responsible for preserving many native American tribes who would have been completely destroyed by more powerful tribes had the colonists not been here to help defend them.

I should have been more specific.
The Spanish brought them through Mexico where the Apache stole some, bred them and copied the skills of riding through observation. And Apaches didn't ride into battle, they dismounted to fight. My guess is they used common sense, and realized how stupid it was to take such a valuable animal into battle. Needed those horses to leave afterwards.
