I want to hear the story about the original horse that outran the Calvary over rough terrain. Crossed divides without being shawd.. the original cayuse and the appy were two different breeds. Charlie Russell and Vernon the boy. Two good Montana artists depicted the Cayuse.

The Nez Perce horse is as near to the original Appaloosas that out ran the American cavalry as you are likely to see in modern times. Consider carefully Meriwether Lewis comment on the original Appaloosas at 0.45.....They are lofty (meaning tall ) and elegantly formed (meaning fine) .......and many of them look like fine English (original word used by Lewis was coursers.........old English word for racehorse).
The Spanish stock available at this time did not fit this description, certainly not the Quarter horse blood infused so readily at a later date.
There is a theory that the Russian fur traders bought Akhal Tekes over to America before the Spanish conquistadors arrived with there much stockier and smaller mounts. These horses were crossbred before the majority of the Europeans even arrived to the western states. Meriwether Lewis was a noted horse breeder and knew horses very well .....his comments are compelling and true as to what he saw.
It is interesting to note and has now been prooved that the Akhal Teke is the pro originator of the English thoroughbred and not the Arab breed as thought by many. Please read the Gerome diversity and the origin of the Arabian horse (published 16th June 2020). It states that, contrary to popular belief, we could trace NO significant genomic contribution of the Arab breed to the Thoroughbred racehorse, including Y chromosome ancestry.
In short..........The Nez Perce Horse.......is the real deal.
