- In this video I'll show you how to make a simple water filtration system. This system costs around $32. It requires no pumping because it's a gravity fed system.
The filter I used in this video was a Sawyer mini. It filters up to 100,000 gallons of water at .01 microns. If you wish for more than 100,000 gallons you may look into using the Sawyer Squeeze. It has all the same specifications as the mini, but will filter up to 1 MILLION gallons of water.
These filters will remove bacteria and protozoa (including Giardia and Cryptosporidium) however they don't remove chemicals, metals or viruses. In North America viruses aren't very common in the water. If you're unsure of viruses in your water you can filter then boil your water to be sure. These filters are meant to filter any water from the back country such as water from a stream, river or lake.
and it's perfect for use during earthquakes, hurricanes, flooding, boil alerts, mission trips
Great video brother!!! I made one for a friend a few years back and all I added is a threaded tire valve to the lid and used a bike tire pump to pressurize the bucket to speed up the water flow. Cheers 🍻
Thank you for the video. I bought one of these filters today and thought of doing something like this. Your instructions are helpful. Rev
You can get Mini bucket adapter kits from Highwater Filters with all the necessary pieces. For hose I use 1/4-inch inside diameter food grade hose from Lowe’s.
Excellent explaination.
Having this 5 gallon bucket really helped to cut down on trips to the creek!
+Justin Wilson it worked like a champ on our trip didn't out brotha? We NEED to go again!!
I'm wondering how well brackish water would filter. Another great video. Good luck with the Alone entry!!!
Can you list the parts needed with specific sizes if possible, other than the bucket and filter, please? Thank you!!
Sweet alternative to the 2bucket w berky black filters and takes up alot less space
Great idea! I have a Berkey water and three $20 Sawyer filters. Now I know what my project will be tomorrow
great video. I will actually make one of these for a camping trip i have planned with my boys this summer. Thanks brotha. you always seem to answer my questions before I even ask. Have a great day
very cool! I have always enjoyed you making things...remember from a long time ago, the small wooden box you made and gave away as a contest prize........that was the best prize you have had!
+Cmax Arms Thank you! I'll do something like that again!
To suck water from the line, splice on a hydration pack hose with a mouthpiece.
The hose is too long. It would serve you better if it was 18" - 2'. A 3' hose is better off for a two bucket system.
Empty the bucket and detach the hose before you back wash the filter.
I don't know why ppl who use levers spouts don't drill out the spouts to cup height, to leave room for settling particles (as you mention). You still want that, because of the suction drawing flow of water to the spout, in a GRAVITY filtration system.
Thanks man, will have to add this set up to this years camping gear,
Thank you!
nice filter set up just what Ive been looking for n not spending a 100 dollars on filters .. for general purpose
Great system. I thought of an additional idea if you had a second clean 5 gallon bucket or large stainless steel container you could put the the end of the filter in it. Then add a spigot for filling the bottles. That way you could put say 4 gallons of water in the system. It would filter while you were doing something else like hunting for food or building a shelter etc.
+Shawn R That's a great idea! Thank you
JIUJITSU2000 Thank you the five gallon bucket contraption gave me the idea of how to use my second sawyer filter.
i got that filter and i use it all the time and once i filter my water i boil the water for 8 to 10 min too kill even more of whats left and i let it cool enought if i am going too drink it too put it back in my bottle.
very nice video. I made a similar bucket water filtration system. an older video of mine, hidden among my older videos I'm sure. A great system to filter water.
That is very cool! I would like to do that with a couple of bags!
Great video! Can you list the parts? I went to Home Depot and the guys helping were worthless in the PVC department. I found the threaded barb item but they couldn't find the other two parts. They were out of a lot of the 3/4" PVC attachments. I'm guessing I have to order them online but I definitely want to do this project. I also couldn't get anything to screw all the way in on the threaded barb. Only about 2-3 turns before it stops. Do we force it? The H.D. guys were frustrating. Thanks!
Excellent video.
Excellent video, Atb Glenn.
South-West-Wilderness Thank you!
What size rubber hose, like inches in diameter, do I look for? Thanks. Also, what size pvc plumbing fittings?
You don't need to do anything with the bucket. You can just siphon the water.
this project would benefit from a simple on/off valve either at the bucket or at the filter
Great idea....
17:13... Technically, that is bottled water. 😏
It's better than nothing.i ain't got the money too do it any other way nor will anyone if shit hits the fan if lake or stream water is all I have too get
@@thegrayman7373 ... I was merely pointing out that he said it was better than bottled water, while he's drinking from a water bottle.
👍👍👍👍👍👍
You should check out this filter too, the brand is called H2O Survival-H2OLIFEGUARD-99.9999% Water Filter Straw- 23.75 it cost me, I got this one on Ebay, waited until the price drop,, I purchase the mini and the sawyer squeeze along with this survival straw for the virus one.
chucky chuck thank you for letting me know!
Being the survivalist that you are, any recommendations for making saltwater drinkable?
CORZER0 thank you. yes,,, make distilled water. get a metal container. I might make a video on this in the future
That would be great! I am in FL, so I'm surrounded by it. Is distillation the only method?
CORZER0 no, there are other ways.
Ok video you should have told us the size of the fittings some of us are not plumbers
Great idea
+Edward Pedregon Thank you!
