career as a member of the New York Islanders on Saturday April 12, 1986
against the visitng Washington Capitals, at Nassau Coliseum. After taking

affectionally known by his adoring fans as MR. ISLANDER, returned to the
bench, never to play another NHL game for the rest of his life.
Sadly, Islanders lost that final game of the 1985 - 86 season, 3 - 1.
Even though they made the playoffs, Al Arbour's boys were quickly
exited in the Division Semi - Finals, by the Washington Capitals.
The same team who defeated the Isles in the final game of
the regular season several days earlier, lossing the series in only

delivered his personal apologies to THE GREAT ONE, as the 2 teams lined up
for the traditional post - series handshake at center ice, immediately after
the Isles dominant 4 game sweep of the young Oilers, a few nights later
at Nassau Coliseum on Tuesday night May 17, 1983.
Gretzky himself, graciously accepted Smith's apology which deeply moved
many fans in the arena, and in living room homes across the continent, that
unforgettable evening, exactly 41 years ago in Uniondale, New York.

This unexpected dissplay prompted Gretzky in suggesting to Coach Sather
and his fellow teammates that the demonstration itself gave the Oilers, the
exact kind of motivated inspiration they successfully used, to end the 4
year Islander reign, by dethroning them of their precious chalice
which is precisely what happened the following season in Game - 5 of
the Stanley Cup Final, contested before a raucous and extremely noisy
