Why You Should Deadhead Hydrangeas! | Cranbury Fields Flower Farm

  • Should I deadhead my hydrangeas is a question i get asked a lot. I will show you how and when to deadhead hydrangeas - and explain the differences between deadheading hydrangeas and pruning hydrangeas .
"Whether to prune hydrangeas is often debated, but studies have shown that dead-heading spent flowers definitely encourages more and bigger blooms. All hydrangeas benefit from regular dead-heading to encourage more hydrangea blooms.

Ok, we now know we totally screwed up our hydrangeas. My husband was cutting the WHOLE PLANT back to the ground in Sept. once the leaves turn completely black from frost. We get huge lush green bushes back in the spring, but no flowers. My question is, do we just leave the plant go from now on, even with those black dead leaves?

Sometimes, that’s all a person needs, is to hear someone say not to stress. I’ve been stressing about when to deadhead. I realize now that what I did last year, was I pruned two of my plants instead of deadheading. I’m going out to deadhead this morning, things will look neater. Thanks for giving me that extra push and confidence.

So excited to have found your channel! I’m a newbie to flower gardening. Hydrangea are my all time favorite flowers and I planted two of them! Unfortunately, here in MA, it’s been so hot this summer, my beautiful blue blooms are now green. Still pretty, but not as pretty as the blue. I’ve done my best to keep up with watering (despite a ban), but I’m afraid it’s just been too hot. I had hoped they’d stay bluer longer.
This video was SO helpful to learn when and how to deadhead. I’ll be sure to this in the Spring. Fingers crossed next year’s blooms will be just as plentiful.
Looking forward to many more of your helpful and easy to understand gardening tips!!! 💕

We bought a home with the biggest plant I’ve ever seen, she is old. Can’t believe I didn’t kill her. Anyways, past 8 years I have seriously over pruned. Last year I didn’t touch the plant and this spring I did what i just saw you do (I don’t know what inspired me). Now she has more budding than ever! All the stems are standing! Perhaps no more flowers laying on the ground, we have super strong stems this year. I need to sub ‘cause my wife loves those huge white flowers. Teach me lady, teach me.

Thank you so much for this video. I’m a noob in gardening and hydrangeas. I live in Kansas City and I’m wondering when is it the right time to “deadhead”. Thanks in advance.

I planted an endless summer two months ago. When I bought it, it had one bloomed out and since it has bloomed three more, but it hasn’t grown in height. Still the same height as when I bought it. Any suggestions?

I’m British and lived in the US for many years trying to make a UK garden with plants I grew in temperate England….big mistake….. in Maryland close to DC where temperatures are far from temperate winter or summer.
I pruned a number of different hydrangeas the same way not realising that some bloom on old wood, some on new. Wish I’d seen this video before. I did eventually research the problem and had many lovely blooms on the variety of hydrangeas growing happily in the semi shade of my deciduous garden trees! Back home in soggy UK the same is true…know your plants flowering habits!

Hydrangea is a great medicinal plant as well, hydrangea is used for urinary tract problems, infections of the bladder, urethra and prostate; enlarged prostate; and kidney stones. If not mistaken it's great for bouts of severe hay fever too.

Should we only deadhead in spring? Thank you for your videos!

  • @shannonsears-rivera7159

HI and thanks for your videos, I have a 30 yr old climbing hydrangea. It sits like a canapy. I have to trim in early spring because it gets too heavy.. But underneath the canopy is lots of old wood with thick hard to trim branches. I have tried to get throw them but sometimes I have not been able.. A few. pieces could use a very strong person or a saw? I think if I could trim it it would fill out underneath. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks again for all your info you share!

Thanks. I used this advice to deadhead my hydrangeas. Do the dead flowers fall off on their own if you don't deadhead them or would they be there next to the new flowers in summer?

I have a few but they do not bloom well.
Bloom on new growth but only 3 blooms. I’m going to send pics of I can figure out how. Any suggestions

I cut my dead blooms , like she showed, at the end of summer.....new growth of leaves and Blooms develop the next season.
