  • Thanks for viewing the restoration of this 1971 Jeep J-2000 pickup truck 4x4 4 wheel drive restoration. The off-road 4 wheel drive pickup truck is a true survivor and has the perfect patina paint on it and we named this truck the Tonka Truck due to its characteristics. The truck is sporting a Buick Dauntless factory 350 V8 engine with 3 speed transmission, factory power steering, drum brakes, 4 inch suspension lift, warn 8274 winch on custom winch bumper, custom black powder coated Roll bar with KC search lights, KC daylighter front fog lights, American racing wheels with BFgoodrich mud terrain tires, rancho shocks, Distressed brown leather interior, custom sound system and much more. The truck restoration wasn't a full frame off restoration but everything was serviced and restored to new within budget reasons. The bed was taken off and the frame and running gear was wire wheeled and painted with por15. The underside of the bed was prepped correctly and undercoated with period correct asphalt rubberized undercoating. Make sure to check out the vintage skidoo snowmobiles and 1985 Yamaha Tri-z 250 3 wheeler in the bed! You did a nice job on your Jeep, not too over the top but tasteful. My Uncle had a similar truck he bought new in the winter of 1970. It too was a 1971 Jeep J -4000 with the Buick 350 V8 but he had the 8'-0" pickup body and 4-speed transmission. These old J - Series Jeep's were great work trucks as he used his on his farm and commercial plowed in winter ( seven and one-half Meyer plow). I still have my Dad's 1966 Jeep J -2000 seven foot pickup body with AMC 232 six cylinder engine and 3-speed transmission. It is still my plow truck ( also seven and one- half foot Meyer plow ). I pushed thru 6'-0" of snow in the winter of 2015 the most I have ever had to plow in my lifetime. Those trucks are no speed demons but will work all day and then some.

Thats awesome, does he still own the truck or in the family?

@@gregsrestorations7019 Unfortunately no, as he passed away in 1992 and his kids had it scrapped. My Jeep however soldiers on after a major restoration in 1993. My cousin Bob and I replaced the entire frame from the cab back and I found a good donor pickup body from a 1977 Jeep that fit perfectly. Those Jeep body styles did not change much from 1963 until 1989 when production ceased.

That is one good look'n Gladiator! That color with it's patina finish and the rarity of a Dauntless 350 / 3-sp powertrain is about as good as it gets! Well-presented video too, nice work to all involved.

@Greg's Restorations You did a great job on that truck! I have a '66 Gladiator thriftside that I would like to look much like yours. Did you use the Hell Creek 4" lift kit? Also, what size tires are those? Thanks!

Nice job. However looks like you (or someone previous) did a spring-over-axle (SOA) up front because I believe all the J-trucks came with spring-under from the factory, unfortunately. But that design decision was purposeful, for a low ride height. Thanks for keeping things pretty darn stock, and what's not stock is nearly 'period'. As good as it gets IMO.

Thanks for commenting in. I'm not 100% sure but we installed a 4 " lift kit in the stock position on the axles and they were already spring over with stock springs (sat very low). I'd double check but I believe they came stock spring over.

All SJ JTrucks were SOA through ‘73 with outboard mounted springs. In ‘74, they went to SUA with springs mounted under frame.

What's the interest in these trucks like? I just acquired 2 a 71 long bed and a 68 short wide bed

They have a good following. They are not worth a million dollars but a cool truck. Parts are available but some can be tricky to get

@gregsrestorations7019 I believe both have extra parts in the beds. I'm throwing around the idea of turbocharging one.

Where did you find a lift kit for it? I'm helping build a 1970 j2000 and can not find a lift kit anywhere all I can find is for j 10/j20 and I was told those are different then the j2000

A 350 Buick is not a 350 Chevy. I would hope a restoration specialist would know this.
