    About IIHS:
    The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries and property damage from motor vehicle crashes through research and evaluation and through education of consumers, policymakers and safety professionals.
    IIHS was founded by auto insurance associations back in 1959-incidentally, the same year Volvo introduced the three-point safety belt. Since then, the IIHS has continued its work to reduce the frequency of collisions and to minimize the rate and severity of injuries (and monetary damage) in the crashes that cannot be prevented.

    I just looked it up, the reason cars did so poorly in 2012 is because 2012 was the first year the IIHS introduced small overlap crash tests. Before that they mostly did moderate over lap crash test. A small overlap crash test puts more pressure on a small area, so all these cars would do much better in a moderate overlap crash test.

    • @gentle285
      @gentle285 Před 3 lety +17

      Why are you looking for excuses? Your reasoning only means that manufactures only engineered them to perform well on the tests and not to actually protect the customer at all "costs", which is incredibly shameful. The manufacturers whose cars performed well even at the introduction of the test are the only ones you can trust.

    • @Duraputer
      @Duraputer Před 3 lety +58

      @@gentle285 it's not an excuse, it's the companies were not yet ready for the new test. The were probably notified of the test a year before, but it takes a lot to design a frame to withstand a small over lap test. A lot of these vehicles that did poorly were 4 years old, so they just didn't have a new frame to test it. Like the cr-v for example the frame was released in 2007, and it was pretty much the same in 2012. Now i still think having a small over lap test is a good thing, because it forces companies to make their cars safer, but to make a car safer that takes time and money.

      I don't know how real are the notes. I mean, there's couple cars tests where the A pilar are almost broken, the dummies head almost goes outside the window and the side airbag opens after, and that car get M (moderate) and other cars where you can see that the pilar A stays intact and the safe cage also intact, the dummies hit the central opened airbag correctly, and get P (poor) note. There's a "dieselgate" here on those tests also?
      Look at Chevrolet Sonic, as examples. Or Ww CC...

    90% of the vehicles tested had (A) pillar deformation and the dash intruded towards the drivers body. It was also clear starting in 2012 that the Mercedes and BMW had the strongest subframe probably from higher strength steel to protect the passenger compartment. Volkswagen seem to do well here too. The latter years for the Lincoln and even more dramatic failure in the Cadillac, the whole frame of the driver’s side just started to crumple front all the way to the back. I was surprised at how poorly the reliable Asian cars perform. The frames were just not as rigid as the BMW’s, Merced’s or Volkswagen’s passenger bubble, that was clear. The large trucks too, major cabin deformation. If the car doesn’t contain the high strength steel passenger compartment it’s basically a tin can on wheels.

So if it deploys late, that means it didn't serve any function in saving you from injury or death, but that risk of injury FROM the airbag is still there. But did you even notice that those cars are from usually the early 2010s and not really from the late 2010s or 2020+. Also they crash test a LOT of cars so only about maybe 20% do poorly. Would you really compromise safety over fuel economy? The automakers nowadays really care about getting an IIHS Top Safety Award to advertise and there are new materials being made to help with fuel economy. Hope you realize why they do the tests.

    The one thing i recognized with most of those tests, the steeringwheelairbag deploys, but through diagonal forces the head lands on the airbag most of the times but slips sideways away onto the dashboard. We really should think of a wider airbag or an airbag with "wings" on each side, to accommodate for that apparent issue. Sidewallairbags maybe reduce the impact further, but the diagonal forces get the head in between the safetyzones, therefore avoiding them almost entirely. Also seen in this footage, how heavy cars still carry on so much momentum, that they tend to go on further, before finally getting the spin. Another point for me to say: SUVs are the bane of humanity. High weight, bad viewangles and high center of gravity. Bad in all regards. I am sitting higher in a VW Transporter AND have more carrying space than a SUV will ever have. Get away from those unsafe vehicles, they use loopholes in the system to avoid some regulatory requirements

      New Subaru Forester gets 33 mpg highway. New Dodge Charger gets 30 mpg highway (with base V6) or 27 highway (V8)... Subaru also has a charity organization:
      "Share the Love
      A lot of love comes out of a Subaru.
      Love is all around at the 2023 Subaru Share the Love® Event. Purchase or lease a new Subaru between November 16, 2023 and January 2, 2024 and Subaru and our retailers will donate a minimum of $300 to charity.
      By the end of this, our 16th year, Subaru and our retailers will have donated more than $285 million to national charities and hometown charities..."
      But sure yeah let's just shit on SUVs without any fucking research whatsoever into their company policies and ACTUALLY LESS EMISSIONS and better mpg than many full size CARS.
      You are in need of a serious rethinking on your viewpoints. I will say that while indeed many people who own trucks and SUVs don't need them or use them for their intended purposes, some actually DO. Regardless, driving a van and then saying SUVs should be banned is some fucking seriously messed up mental gymnastics.
      I will not however say anything bad about you being a brony as I was one once, before I became an Otaku. (Loved the creation of sisterhood between Rainbow Dash and Scootaloo...)

I don't hate you for your view, I just think the suggestion of outright bans is overkill and illogical. We should focus on making our government actually follow through with their promise to install nationwide accessible EV charging stations. @@Crummieboi56 I work in the industry, you don’t need to lecture me on the industry. Since you don’t work in the industry, you probably don’t know that parts are custom made for each company, sometimes even engineered by the automotive company. I was referring on Toyota’s unprofessional habit of throwing suppliers under the bus like with their frame and pedal issues.

    I liked the way the Lincoln glanced off the wall on impact, it could be firewall strength, that caused that, which is what will save you in this type of impact anyway, and as you see micro cars are death traps, they don't have the length of body to absorb the impact. Steering wheel airbag stability is the main problem too, if it doesn't stay in front of you it's no use to you.

      I think the Yaris should have gotten a poor and not a marginal rating. The dummy completely missed the airbag and if not for the seatbelt would have been ejected out of the car. Same for the sonic as the side airbags were very late to deploy and instead trapped the head in the door card.

    So, if you are about to be hit head-on...with small overlap with no way to avoid the hit, steer INTO the obstacle and MAXIMIZE the surface area of the car that hits object/other vehicle.

    Small overlap is harder to stay safe against due to misalignment of the airbags upon impact of which can only be maintained with a stiffer cabin
